Is 1 Enoch 1-36 as old as the Torah? Seems like 1 Enoch-A gains traction as quasi-canonical with each new title in my library. If Enochian and Mosaic Judaism are at odds with each other then does Christianity represent a victory of sorts for the apocalyptic and prophetic vein over the temple cult and the priests? I can’t help but see the “wilderness” as Isaiah’s and Mark’s sacred space over the urban decay of the consumeristic temple precincts and its red light district of money changing pirates. Regardless of what book of parables is, I am dying to hear more about this topic in general. Great interview. Keep it coming St Michael the Arch Anglican!
So if in the Mark references Jesus is the Danielic Son Of Man then that is who he is and remains. Surely his choice to use that phrase was to ensure that identification was affirmed.
I think everyone’s overthinking this phrase. Is it at all possible that Jesus was overheard saying ‘son of Enoch’..? To illustrate: When did Enoch start ‘walking with God’? At the birth of Methuselah. Two more pertinent facts about Methuselah: 1) At 969 years, he had the longest documented lifespan of all the patriarchs. 2) God ensured that the Flood would not commence until Methuselah died. The symbolism is undeniable.
Lord Jesus is giving us a description of his role in His incarnation as Christ! Remember He Is Always The One God, Lord Almighty. However His role in clothing Himself in flesh as Christ (The Anointed One) is to live & die for us as the sacrifice as planned.
I am reading the English translation of 1Enoch by Ephraim Isaac in Charlesworth's Pseudepigrapha Vol 1, and he indicates in footnote s for 1Enoch 71:14 that the Geʽez phrase used to refer to Enoch as "son of man" is actually different than the one used for the exalted "Son of Man" of previous chapters. Thus he writes "son of man" when it refers to Enoch in lower case. I find it odd that other English translations don't mention this, and translate it all the same to give the impression that Enoch is the exalted Son of Man. Imo, it's misleading.
It seems like these scholars have too much time on their hands and wish to come up with fresh new ideas (kind of like a fashions designer coming out with new fabulous sexy trends). Always wanting to stay relevant and always wanting toy sell their new line. Isn’t it quite simple. Son of man means man; and also a little more - a mystical divine divine figure in Dan 7 who Jesus seems to be connected. That’s it. That’s how it was taken by all around him too.
