The grinder shot showering the gas bottles !.... ,is an absolute jem for the health and safety brigade ,! .
I love these chaps .
In the late 60's we had a 25ft.x 15ft. room lined with flat tin that we used as spray both. We had a Repco Demon space heater at one end that used lighting kerosene. In Winter all you could see at the end of the room were flames shooting up out of the heater.
It obviously never occurred to us that we could have been the second crew to land on the moon. Not long after that WH&S made the boss put in flame proof lights and switches, as the heater was not alight, they never said anything. Now you need steel capped thongs to collect the mail.
I remember a couple of years ago there was this guy who had a DIY-program on Danish tv. He once showed how to make a spray booth for aerosol painting from a wooden box and a vacuumer/hoover. Proud man - made it by himself.
Next week he had to tell everybody to DON’T DO IT!
It turned out that the vacuumer/hoover dragged the fumes through the electric motor and a single spark could cause an explosion. With a risc of burning down the house. 🤔
@@kasperkjrsgaard1447 🤣🤣🤣🤣...brilliant ! .
@@bartholomewchuzzlewit4356 🤣🤣🤣🤣 ...Love it ! .
Dear Ivan, thank you so much for these vids. It`s such a shame that we have lost so many men like you, you are a dying breed. I remember as a kid going to so many places like this with my dad and meeting loads of older men who new so much about engineering and were always being recruited to fix something or other. That`s how I got into engineering. I wish that I lived nearer to you I would be working there for nothing. Stay well Ivan and john. Best regards from a wellwisher. Paul from Liverpool.
Ivan, I can safely confirm that your propane cylinder has no leaks! 😊
Or the acetylene!
I really wish I was on your side of the pond. I'd love to visit. Ivan's seems like such a great old chap and he is so witty. Keep them coming gents. Cheers
"Watch out where the grinder sparks are going!" Don't worry, the propane and acetylene bottles will stop them going too far... Great video!
Any body doing that stunt won't last too long . Now thats bloody dangerous .
@@pauldrinkwater2621 he seems to have lasted fairly well
It's only dangerous if you have a leak and if you do have a leak any number of other things in a workshop like that could set it off!
@@creamwobbly yeah that or a mig welder
34 minutes, felt like 5. Fantastic project, skills, humor and sounds.
Thank you for these videos
I could listen to Ivan waffle on for hours .... wait a minute, I have.
The Racoon👀 is doing a great job, a wireless lapel mic on Ivan might help with hearing all that he says. 🇨🇦
Thanks for the comment. Outside we will use one but inside the shop it doesn’t seem to get everything that’s going on
That feeling when you realise you need grandpa Jean Luc Picard with an angle grinder in your life... 😆❤
two old blokes who have probably forgotten more than most have learned about racing engines and engineering making 'Broom Broom' noises about starting the engines. And then using gaffer tape as a throttle.
And the Pythonesque humour.
"If it all goes wrong we turn turn the petrol off .....and retire"🤣
Just so classically British...
This really is lovely proper engineering work - well done chaps . We need much more .
I don't know if I'd say proper (I'm a CNC machinist), but it's great info on the basics of how to get the job done. They themselves openly state they're cutting corners to just get it running; watching the videos in this thread, I can see them for myself. That being said, they're cutting no more corner's than I probably would in their place.
They're so close!!! I want to hear it roar!!!!!
Bodge it and scarper 😂 seriously though they are really ingenious with all of the short cuts they use. If you’re in a tight spot these are the guys to call. 👍
I have a feeling this could be the best 34 mins of my life!....maybe not quite, but I do like this channel!
Yes, don't forget about the most fun you can have without laughing
A real breath of fresh air watching you all work,a real tonic.
That wee engine is so cute.
The ether startup sequence reminded me of something from Zip Ties & Bias Plies.
Just waiting for Ivan to shotgun a few beer cans and start his burn out. I think only Ivan can match Peg for the burnout and finally put stuntman out of his misery.
Really enjoying where this is going, I can't say a mini fan but the engineering you've done has me hooked!! Roll on episode 5.👌
Yay! Part 4 has arrived. Beer poured and feet up :-) Thank you, enjoyed that and looking forward to Part 5!! You only have to experience arc eyes once to then be super careful so welcome to the club.
Arc Eyes, tell me about it!
I now have Cortical Cataracts because of other fools. Saving up for Laser Surgery at 67 years old, get the money or go blind.
NOT after donations, sh*t happens.
What a great channel. Love it. Old minis are so hard to find here in America. I would love to find one. Keep up the great work.
I have to say that the videography is just fine. A tripod could never keep up with Ivan. The only thing that can catch a spring chicken is a raccoon. Preferably demented...
Hahaha
Hmmm, love the content, thanks, but the racoon dementia literally gives me motion sickness. I had to look away and just listen for bits of it. Yes, I'm a delicate little flower. But any smoothing of the movement would be very much appreciated.
Had arc eyes once when I was about twelve. I used to help my father on weekends when he was welding the steel floors in 20 X 60 silos. I would push the metal plates into place, strike off the slag ever few inches, and keep him fed with welder rod. It was a seven hour job. One weekend we drove to Vermont, four hours from home, and upon arrival realized I'd forgotten to bring the second welder's helmet. So, for seven hours I tried not to look as he struck his arc but it was futile. We got home late and I just fell into bed. I woke up in the middle of the night feeling like I had sand in my eyes. I didn't get much sleep that night and I was pretty useless the next day. My dad just grumbled about what a klutz I was.
This is the first channel I've ever subscribed to. I love every minute. Improvise and overcome has been our motto for some time too.
I'm glad I found this channel. These are very interesting videos. Good job chaps!
Engineers just having a lark with a fun project, what's not to like!?
Great fun, thanks!
It’s so much fun watching those guys work
That stand is turning out to be quite nice. Don't forget the oil dipstick on the engine.
8:57 I had a car, bad in the mid 80s, can't even remember what model it was but would do similar to your coil robbing but backwards. Would start and rev as long as you held the key in the cranking position. Turned out to be the Ballast resistor. Ain't it strange what jogs your memory. Great build this is.
Nobody will ever appreciate arc eye until they've had it themselves 😎
Best fun I've watched on youtube , whisky poured feet up
I admire you all and respect you all, brilliant channel, even Arkeye the Racoon.
That would be ARCEYE the raccoon to you, mate!!!!!
exciting progress being made. Hope you can test this out in a mini at some point. Could probably turn quite a few heads at a show with a mini with half an engine in it, maybe you could take it racing and see how it competes
Ivan is a legend! Love watching these videos
Never watched a nest of raccoons before! Bloody brilliant. 👍
The sooner those eBay engine mounts turn up the better - can't wait for the next instalment - bloody marvellous content.
I had a bit of an arc eye last week. My own fault. Hope the Raccoon is restored to health. These videos are brilliant. Looking forward to the next. Dean in Oxfordshire.
What fun we're having, and only two cylinders. Just imagine....
Top quality, old school engineering. Hats off to you all, highly entertaining...keep going Ivan your a inspiration to many...
I'm glad to hear that at your age you still have a need for speed, I'm not quite as old as you, but into my seventies and I still have that need. Long may it last.
Oil for blood!
One ton club with the Laverda! Then down to Brighton to run with the scooters!
Thoroughly enjoyed this. I have a Fiat TwinAir and I have to say just what a delight a 2cyl engine can be. Especially for a small car. Less weight, less moving parts, less friction losses and a cheeky note - something between a lawn mower and a V8, if you can imagine that.
Well done Gentlemen, well done. It is amazing what you can do in your shop. The green paint makes that motor look brand new and kind of racy too. Cheers to you.
Best videos ever. Nothing better that listening to a true master mechanic. I would volunteer my time just to sweep the shop and listen to you guys.
These blokes have the proper Mini Mechanic accents. I trust them completely!
Excellent work!
I'll have to get myself a shed in time for my retirement!
I'd feel right at home in this shop, you chaps don't take yourself too seriously and know how to laugh and joke around whilst still getting stuff done.
Keep up the great 👍work I enjoy watching the "demented Raccoon" videos...
The little motor is coming on really well. I first got interested in welded up cranks of different configurations after finding an old article by Phil Irving (Vincent motorcycles, Tuning for Speed etc). He was speculating on the advantages of the 70° or 90° offset crank configuration applied to British parallel twins. I was about to start re-engineering one of the cranks I had by machining a new flywheel and cutting and re welding the lobes when my good friend Mike Leadbeater passed away and his lovely widow offered me a Rob Nourish one piece crank Mike had made in the 80's.
There's some great information about the welded option from a guy called Geoff Collins which has been helpful.
My race engines are slowly coming together and I really should perhaps film the builds but most of my time is taken up with customer's jobs and I swear too much for RUclips 😁 I'm working on modifying a standard Boyer Bransen ignition system and setting up the crank and camshaft endfloat. What I wouldn't do for a little lotto win so I could spend every day building my own bikes. A historic Formula Ford would be the dream addition to the stable. I used to work as a race mechanic on a few of them.
Brilliant thank Ivan. Better than going to the Odeon.
Works of Art. Love your channel.
I can feel the suspense building. For a moment I thought it was going run. This has to be the go to channel for petrol heads, absolutely brilliant 👏👏
Here's a Man who just Knows how to get things done!!🇬🇧🎩🇺🇸🇬🇧🎩🇺🇸
I found Ivan's Shed by accident, but since finding it, and after viewing them all, I find I am impatient while awaiting the arrival of each next one. I'd never heard of a two cylinder Mini, but can't wait to hear it run. It's been a long time since my Mini Seven events with a Downton 850, but I too still enjoy racing. Keep the video's coming they're great.
Love your shed and videos. Please keep them coming 🙏
Bloody awesome Ivan.
Love the banter between the boys! keep it up!
Brilliant, can't wait to see it in action.
Excellent, amazing what experience can do!
V. nice Racooning. Thanks all three.
A great deal of progress in just 34 minutes of excellent video, can't wait for the next instalment!
Great lookin engine guys! Good work on the video too
keep going fellas, what a joy
Wonderful, love doing stuff just because you can, top work chaps
Bravo to the craftsmen at Ivan's Garage... from New Jersey!
Brilliant guys, more please👍
Best thing I've watched all week since the last episode.
Excellent job Gentleman !
That eccentric on the starter is brilliant!
Angle grinding, its lovely to watch!
This is THE BEST series of videos I have watched! Your humour and depth of knowledge is a treat. Thank you.
I wish I had a shed like that!
This project is such a treat. Thanks a bunch guys!
Thanks for watching!
I'd love to buy you a pint and have you punch me in the face. We'll all have a good laugh!
But seriously, this stuff is gold!
Cracking stuff from Yorkshire 👍
Brilliant video as usual
We love this channel! VIVA LÁ RACOON! 🦝
Wealth of knowledge from these fine Englishmen! Thank goodness they're being filmed! 👍
Great Video Guys can't wait to see it running either..! Some Serious Mechanics going down here.
Thanx for all your efforts.
Bring on Episode 6...!
Cheers kim in Oz. 😎
Ivan your a gem and John a diamond the racoon is a star great videos all the lads having fun doing there thing cheers and thank you
Ivan . this project is great fun. Perhaps the next one could be about that tasty looking Vauxhall in the background?
I loved the bit where those sparks flew straight at the gas bottle...
you guys are a hoot, as they say in the southern USA. enjoying the channel. Great work.
Yes Ivan n John, I cannot wait to here that little mini running, its the hardest thing Ive ever done m just WAITING for that 2 cylinder moment..............great engine stand guys , thankyou
Well done blokes , the engines alive.....waiting with baited breath to see what little special you run this 2 cylinder mini engine and gear box in
Can't wait to hear that run.
Great fun... can't wait to see it go! Of course, the temptation to build it a car will have to be considered, haha! Cheers from Canada.
Brilliant series of video's.
can't wait to hear it run.
Would love to find out more history on the engine.
Even aronline web site has no info on this engine (and they know a lot about BMC, Austin and Rover)
Wow I hope you are ok now. Another great video. I would love to come work there but I am a little far away and across the pond...That little engine is so cool.
lel! At 21:08 those gas tubes experience hellfire. 😂
You need a coil rated at 9V and run through a resistance wire. The resistance wire is shorted out during starting to compensate for battery voltage drop.
"You need.." No you dont. while such systems are better than 12v coils.. they certainly weren't common on British cars at the time this engine was made... and this engine wont be under much cold-winter cranking when 9v coils makes more sense. Keep it simple.. a 12v coil will be fine
Remember that the original was thought to be a parallel twin rather than this configuration. This configuration means that there is more load on the starter, and therefore more current and voltage drop, just prior to the ignition point. You can hear the extra load on the starter as the cylinders go through the compression stroke. Additionally, since this isn't the original starter we do not know much about the comparative current profile.
Putting all that together, I believe this is why it needed a second battery to power the ignition circuit which could be overcome with a 9V coil and ballast. Or, assuming there isn't going to be a charging system, just continue with 2 batteries.
Hopefully stem the fire . Brilliant. Keep the vids coming guys proper entertainment. 👍
That two cylinder engine is going to sound great, it certainly sounded better than I thought it would just with the few firing strokes we heard.
Riveting stuff Ivan and John...
Trust me a Raccoon does not have to be demented !!! They are into everything naturally !!! And very quick when they choose !!!
I like your project !!!
Excellent progress, that mini engine will be a v.interesting sound, like a twin cylinder motorcycle engine I'd imagine.
Might be more like a twin cylinder John Deere; when they were fixing the cam shaft, they were basically describing an old"Popping Johnny's" firing order....
This has become now my favourite youtube channel.
This is great, can't stop thinking that Ivan looks and sounds like an older Don from Sexy Beast.
Very NICE! It came a long way from a bare rusty block! Looks fantastic for a prototype engine of any sorts. She sounds like she will maybe fire up without a problems we all are hoping to hear even from way over here across the pond in N.Y. a motor head is a motor head no matter what country your from, we all speak the same language when it comes to playing with engines and gears! Thanks for the video guys go enjoy a good cup of tea, cheers.
I love these videos!
Keep pressing on I can’t wait to hear it run.
This is one of the greatest channels I have come across in a long time..........I get a smile on my face the whole time all the way from Australia thanks for the videos keep up the good work. Ivan could teach edd China a thing or Two
Get the Racoon a Gimbal! Another excellent bit of work there.
Woohoo it lives, well done lads👍 Dyno run next 😂😂
that engine is a beauty
Excellent, thanks.
Love the show, saw a sliced and diced Mini two seater on the net, the engine made for it , your
Oops next job customized Mini, cheers.
