Friend of mine built one of these in the 70's. The straps got stretched out when the wood expanded. The fix was to use longer bolts and put heavy duty valve springs on both ends.
As I said earlier I worked designing redwood hot tubs in in the 1970's we did use redwood and to a lesser extent "red tide water Cypress". One out of 100 tubs was Cypress this was remilled used wood, we also used redwood wine tanks some we had built in the 1930-40's and removed in the 1960's resold and removed again. Then remilled in to hot tubs. This tub looks great sure to an old school round hoop guy flat hoops look off plus we tighten hoops from the chime up
Look amazing!!!!!!! Can you use any type of wood for this? Here in The Netherlands Red Cedar is way to expensive. I was thinking to use Douglas or even pine? And how do you calculate the angle for the sides?
Not sure where you are but that electrical disconnect box I believe is to close to hot tub it's self. Just thought I would chime in, if it's nothing, it's nothing, safety first right, seen you boy there with you, great job. 5 ft min distance unless barrier between tub and electrical, be safe, have fun.
@the samurai carpenter how is it holding up over the years? I'd be interested to know how untreated cedar would age in this scenario. Beautiful build as always!
We also have one of our own. In our setup we use a wood oven with steel sides as a heater, and a water pump taking cold water from the botton, to the top spewing it out on top of the oven. Also we have a fence going around the steel oven, to make sure its not toutched by actident.
I do a lot of cedar shake siding. Sometimes there’s a flair on the first three courses. We soak the boards in garbage bins over night with water. I always wanted to bottle it and use it for cologne
is it maintained as a normal fiberglass hot tub? chemicals used? if you were to not use it during winter would you drain it completely? thank you for any info. I LOVE your videos my hubs and i are shop warriors when we can be.
Many questions concerning this build: 1. Are iron straps just oké to keep the water from flowing out? So no woodglue? 2. Why don't use any oils or varnishes to protect the wood? Doenst the cider gets affected over time?
I have an old stainless steel milk pasturizer vat. Round 5 ft by 3 ft deep. Gonna clad it in wood and build cedar seats inside and use a HERMS/RIMs coil to heat it with wood. Not as fancy but should work
You could try to do a coating on the interior to make it last and use salt water filter instead of chlorine which should decrease how fast it starts to deteriorate. Powder coating requires enough heat, but would be ideal, same with porcelain coating....Good luck! Sounds relaxing.
DANGER DANGER DANGER - you seem to have only put one suction fitting through to the pump inlet (the suction side). A person can easily get stuck on that - please please please - add a T fitting and a second suction fitting. If somebody or something gets trapped on one suction, they can pull off as the system simply draws from the other suction fitting. I put one on the wall and one on the floor if I can to keep even safer. If not, simply go a bit farther around the tub - three feet is a minimum. I'll send you the parts if you need - free - just to be sure you stay safe.
You actually beat me to that. I just saw the episode and was like "Danger Will Robinson...Danger" Those pumps give you amazing hickeys if you are not careful.
What are the dimensions of the fully assembled hot tub? What is the internal width and internal height? Have you considered adding a circular bench to the inside (for sitting)?
me surgieron algunas dudas. ¿usaste algún recubrimiento? ¿qué ángulo de corte tienen las tablas?. Excelente trabajo cómo siempre. Saludos desde México.
Happy Thanksgiving to the Samurai family. That hot tub looks sooooo relaxing. Wish I had the money for the build, I'd love to have one. Nicely done, Jessie.
I would say that he's sitting flat on his butt on the bottom. The tub looks to be only about 30" tall and with the floor probably being 2.5" thick and about the same distance up from the bottom of the sides, I'd say the water is only about 25" deep.
Very true, I looked back and you can tell when they are carrying it around to the back yard that he could sit on the bottom just fine. I'm sure he will build some seats for the kids though!
I work in the 1970's designing redwood hot tubs the best way is to make the seats is without screw using dowels made of the same material as the seats, use silicone rtv as the glue you'll need a dowel making die plate. 1/4" will due but 3/8" is a better size due to the weight of the material. You can make the dowel die by drilling a series of holes in a steel plate and filing progressivly the holes square then push the wood through the dies until round.
is there a way to modify this method of building a hot tub to make a more rectangular shaped or would strapping it like that only work on a rounded style and is it possible to add seating
I have a qwestions for you. Do you think it's possible to build a dog house with joinery. Sort of like a small scale timber frame. Without the big log timbers.
Hey man do you mind explaining the science behind how this thing doesn't leak and how it won't go bad given all the water direct contact with wood over a long period of time? I know you know what your'e doing, I'm just trying to learn. This thing will last years?
Freehands router for the round pipe hole......pucker factor. Knowing me it would grab and write my name on the side in 0.2 seconds. That is a lot of perfectly clear cedar!
How does a wooden hot tub do in terms of being insulated? I see that you have an insulated lid, but how about the sides and bottom? Are you going through a ton more power just to keep the water hot? Are you planning on building any sort of roof cover or are you leaving it out in the weather? It's truly gorgeous...and sounds like it smells heavenly! Thanks.
My understanding is that 2 inch thick cedar has very good thermal insulation properties. The vast majority of heat lost with a hot tub is not out the sides, it's out the top. So a well insulated cover is the best thing for saving heat.
There no need to use clue ! The expansion of the Cedar will create enough compression to create the perfect seal! And cluing it together might creat more arm then good

Years ago we built one out of redwood ... soooooo much fun, especially in the snow!
Making a hot tub in winter, very smart enjoy the view outside without getting cold

Looking at building one of these myself! Thanks for the great video!

Wow. The new Samurai Quality video.
That is a monster of a hot tub! Fantastic!

I agree. We need an update video

Beautiful tub.
Thats a pretty cool tub. Enjoy it. Relax and keep on roling. Im exited to see mor of your stuff. Its god to see you back in line after the hard times.
Great vid Jessie, would you mind sharing how you did the heater + pump + electric work? I'm a bit stuck in that one

May another wood work also? A cheaper sort?! Any recommendations? Geat work!!!
Is there a reason for not applying a finish to it? It will turn grey.
Great project!
With my budget I had to scale it down and now I’m standing in a oak whisky barrel freezing my nips off! Happy Thanksgiving Samurai
So glad to have found your channel. Great stuff.. inspiring for this DIYer. Thanks man, keep it up!

I hope you keep these videos up, these are what i want to base my house off of

Just make sure to keep your protein rest below 118.

Your school kicks ass man. I’ve learned so much. Thank you
What happened to all the rest of the videos of the deck project?
Deck my ass... that was a well hidden-cry for more money- house renovation.
@Robert Orr yeah, but can you blame him? Have you seen the cost of lumber lately?
Don't forget to put the level away!

So amazing Jesse!
Beautiful job. Do you have a problem with Rodents nesting underneath? If so, what is your fix for that?
So the burning question, what was the cost of cedar for this build?
Bradley Vierkant do tell
Do some maths. It’s x per board ft and x board ft.
@@biguprochester so Id say about $3.50

What kind of heater is to be used for heating water? Can you send me the link.? Nice video
Hi Samurai, sorry if I missed it, did you show how to build the seats for the hot tub? Thanks
yes i can imagine the tactile, and sensual feeling from the cedar would make fiberglass look like a very poor second
Do you have a parts list for the pump/heating elements etc?
can the wood be paint with the ship lacquer ? As I know this kind of ship paint is water resistant

Man this is stunning. Great job.
That is some perfect lumber! Great project and video. Thanks for sharing.
Which machine are u using to warm the tub? Please do tell
I just bought the cedar for my future hot tub
That's awesome!
couple of questions: how are you gonna prevent freeze if it's gonna be filled all winter? how do you heat it?
Happy Thanksgiving to the Samurai family. That hot tub looks sooooo relaxing. Wish I had the money for the build, I'd love to have one. Nicely done, Jessie.
amazing work as always samurai
So do you just squat in it? Any plans for seats?

Do your side wood panels have curves?
Awesome!
How'd you do the math for the angles? Find the circumference divide for an equal number than divide by 360?
Truly amazing work!

Where´s the HOT from the hottub? How do you heat the water?
How is the vest protype coming along? Been a while since the last update on it

Pretty cool Jesse, what angles on the slats for that dimension?
I'm sure we're in completely different areas so it'll be quite different but do you mind me asking about how much it costed you to build this?

How long do wood framed windows last?
The other 3 dudes horsing that tub into position all looked suspiciously Samurai-esque. Brothers? Great job, by the way! Very nice!
You should build an inverse one and then use it as a circle raft down a river, that'd be fun.
What are you sitting on inside the tub? I didn't see any benches.
Thats very cool

How do you seal from water leaks?
I love it! ....but how long will it last?
I wonder. He didnt treat the cedar wood? How long would a hot tub made out of cedar last?
Can you leave a link to the pump ect to make this baby heat up please?
Is it possible for the tub to swell, break that metal strap, and whip someone?
Did you have to do any sort of sealing to the tub? Looks amazing!!!!
I reckon the slight expansion from holding water would seal any small gaps. Wooden ships/boats work the same.
What kind of glue do you use to connect each Woods?
so cool
nice as usual; I would ad some seats though... some thing with not an 90° angle ^^
