- I backpacked one of the most iconic hikes in Yosemite National Park, Half Dome! As a solo female traveler I've done some crazy stuff but THIS is next level.

Hello friends! I’m Erin Elyse, a part time farmer and part time traveler. I spend half of my year growing vegetables and flowers and the other half living in my newly bought and converted van. I also love checking National Parks off my list and backpacking! Subscribe if you are interested in learning more about my adventures!
Good advice - don't let any other backpackers intimidate you!!! The wilderness space belongs to everyone!!! Great high mountain footage too!
Thanks! Yeah when I first walked in I was like uhhhhh… but then I got over it haha!
@@erin_elyse How in the world did backpackers in little Yosemite valley intimidate you? Was there a roving band of rouge backpacker thugs there? I've never met an intimidating backpacker.
This hike is in my top 3 experiences for sure!! Did it back in December last year in one day, I had to start at like 3 am haha good times 🎉
I typically start a hike up Half Dome at 3PM. By the time you get to the cables, they are a ghost town. And you basically own the summit. You can also stay for sunset, which is REALLY cool.
@@matthewstorm5188headlamp was good enough for the hike back in the dark?
@@martineseverri5160 Absolutely! Coming down the cables in the dark is not as scary as you might think. And let’s face it. If you are starting at 3AM, you are hiking in the dark. How if hiking in the dark after sunset any different?
You did awesome! No cable for safety, just nailing it! Your in awesome shape!
Well done you! I made it to the top of Half Dome about 13 years ago and never again!!😂😂 I still can’t believe I did it I was so scared going up those cables🙈 and it was super busy when I was there it was chaos! So lovely to see you climb with hardly anyone around😊❤
Yeah I got soooo lucky with barely anyone up there! The scariest part for me was having to let people pass so I can only imagine it more crowded!
You’re a BEAST for tackling alone! Looks so fun 😊
That’s insanity! My hands are sweating just watching you 😂 well done!!!!
Thank you🥹🙏
I love every single of ur videos, ur life is an example for me and u're an inspiration for me and my future, keep it up !
AW! Thank you so much, thats so kind.
I always did it in 1 day, but this was before the cable permits. The quality/clarity of your videos take me back to when I walked those same steps many years ago
It gave anxiety just to watch. I would never to this. Be safe out there! 🙏
Great video, good memories. In college we’d run repeats up to the base of half dome in preparation for Ironman. Three repeats in one day were killers. Great video, thanks for sharing.
Backpacking Half Dome is doing it the hard way. I can’t imagine having to carry that heavy pack up the Mist Trail.
thank you Erin for taking us in your backpack and making us discover this beautiful place
🏞🏔🏕👸😍👌❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
And Hi from Paris, France
👋😍🇺🇲🇨🇦🇲🇫❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for watching!!🙏🙏🥹💗
Hi
You are so courageous! I almost start crying just looking at those cables. KEEP BEING YOU!!!❤🎉🎉🎉
Aww!! Thank you so so much. That means a lot!
Great vid, thank you. I'll be there in 2 weeks
OMG I couldn't do that cable part! Good for you!!
It’s scarier to watch a video of someone climbing the cables than it is to actually be there.
Wow!!! Beautiful!!
Awesome video Yosemite looks soo cool would love to go there one day 🙂
yes you should go if you ever get the chance! thanks for watching!
Did this exact trip but in October 31st last year. Off season so there were even less people. First time backpacking and Half Dome. Was amazing!!! Great video
Omg that gave me anxiety ! You go girl ! 👏 its beautiful !
Thank you🙏🙏
Very Impressive!!!
Thank you!
Do you have a PayPal account where we might contribute a little to your travels?@@erin_elyse
Headed there end of September. Also staying in backpackers campground. How much water did you carry with you for the dome? Enjoyed your video!
4:31 Girl you are INSANE!!! I love it 😂😂😂 this looks like the best hike ever !
Hahaha💗💗
Epic hike!!! ❤
Thanks!!
Everyone should be required to use a harness, lanyard ,carabineer to climb up and down the cables. Just saying expert tower worker.
And gloves.
If you need safety, Harnessed up there you don't belong on the cables.
@michaelbottjer3385 if you need a seatbelt to drive, you shouldn't be driving...
@@michaelbottjer3385bullshit just wait for someone to slip on you
No they should not.
Absolutely insane 😍😍 you amaze me
awww thank you 🥰
OMG that's awesome! Be careful and enjoy!
Thanks!!
Congrats! Great video! And you respected the danger by mounting your camera on your shoulder strap!
Done it 3 times in one day my average is 11 1/2` hours round trip and 6 liters of water . I used a water filter and the most water i carried was 1 1/2 liters of water . I have hiked before permits and with permits , with gloves , without gloves , forwards down and backwards down on the cables . I have done the mist trail down and the John Muir trail down
My knees hurt just watching this. Congrats on hiking half dome.
Thank you!!
You did it!! No one on the dome cables. Which month did you climb??
Congrats!!
So awesome!
Thanks!
This makes me want to get back out there and start hiking again
Woohoo yes!!
Nice video Erin. I'm attempting this in July in one day. what were the hardest aspects of this hike for you? It looks pretty sketchy just going up the subdome part.
Magnificent view with your brave heart 😃🌲
My 175 lb self accidentally did this hike. I say accidentally, because I had ZERO knowledge or experience about Yosemite's trails.
I just kept following the two trails that interconnected. It's not for everyone. It wasn't for me, but I did it. Was the hardest hike of my experience.
OMG! I am so terrified of heights! Good for you! Your dad has taught you well. :)
Thank you! Haha I know he did!
I spent 4 days in Yosemite last month. Had an Amazing time. I met a guy that climbed Half Dome and now I'll definitely do this if I'm lucky enough to get a permit for a September climb. Love your solo adventure and it sure does make awesome memories. 👌 😉
You will love it! Fingers crossed for that permit!! Thanks for watching :)
@ReubenG Did you get the permit for September? I’m aiming for next September (2025)
Beautiful views 😧
Right?!
@@erin_elyse Yes ! 😀
I want to do this hike so bad! I did the first quarter to the top of vernal falls but had to leave so couldn't go any farther but it was still amazing and beautiful.
Best perspective of the incline I have seen...yikes, don't think i can stomach it
Too awesome 👏🏼
Thanks!!
You're a brave little gal
Absolutely stunning!
I cant believe people do that trail in one day. Do they not snack? Do they not enjoy the scenery? Do they even want to be there? I cant come close to finishing the 17 mile trail by me in 1 day and thats mostly flat Michigan terrain and not anywhere close to as beautiful as Yosemite. It probably doesnt help that ill see a cool tree or mushroom and be distracted by it for 10 minutes, but still!
I can't believe it either honestly!! I'm super glad that I was able to go backpacking instead and take my time. I'm not trying to rush those waterfalls haha! I feel the cool tree/mushroom distractions 😂
Climbing Half Dome in a day is just easier. The BIG thing is, you aren’t carrying a heavy pack, so you aren’t ‘cooked’ by the time you reach the top of Nevada Falls.
As for being rushed, I’ve never felt this way. I never felt like I couldn’t enjoy the hike because I did it in one day. In fact, I would probably be MUCH more stressed about a backpacking trip because of all the planning and preparation and the greater possibility that something could go wrong. To me, dayhiking is simple, easy, and stress-free.
@@matthewstorm5188I’m with you on that. Less hassle and load to deal with. If you start easily like 4am you can take long breaks and still make it back in good time.
@@erin_elyseYou are definitely an expert backpacker! Did you have to reserve any camping spot in advance? Or just get a wilderness permit and the cable permit?
@@teegees Then again, what do you mean by ‘get back in good time’? I certainly don’t mind hiking in the dark (and you will hike in the dark if you start at 4AM, too). And although I may get back at 11ish or midnight, it’s time to go to bed at that point. What am I going to do for the rest of the day if I start at 4AM and return in the afternoon feeling like a zombie from having next to no sleep and having hiked 16 miles up and back from Half Dome?
Here’s how I see it. If you want to start at 4AM because it’s your ‘cup of tea’, go for it. My thing is that starting early like this is shoved down people’s throats as the only way to do the hike. This leaves people enjoying the hike less than they could or even compromising their safety due to fatigue. Or just avoiding the hike altogether. At the end of the day, hiking Half Dome (or anything else) isn’t a job where you have to show up at a given time. It’s meant to be enjoyed, and should be treated as such.
I love your channel!
Thanks for watching!!
nice video. Do you have to get a permit to camp in little Yosemite valley??
If i ever get a kidney transplant.....this 1st on my bucket list. I went to Yosemite National Park about 5 years ago and i alway wanted to climb half dome
Going solo hiking is always a good idea. Not clipping in is another mark of someone who knows what they are doing.
And keeping the camera on yourself instead of on Half Dome and the scenery along the way, is the hallmark of an expert cinematographer
You can elect to test yourself & your limits. Or you can hold forth in u tube comments. Whichever your stamina will allow !
Nothing to do but start!
Exactly! I got to the base and was like ummm I guess lets do this lol!
What month and day of the week did you do the cables?
Where do you leave the rest of your stuff just before climbing Half Dome?
@@s3999 People who backpack in to Little Yosemite Valley leave their stuff at their campsite.
What hoodie is that?
Dang! I can’t believe you did the cables without a harness. I’d be scared 💩less not to. You’re a beast!!
I have a permit to the half dome cables do i need also a permit to little yosemite campground? 😅
@@orestearroyo Yes. A day permit for the cables does not cover backcountry camping.
what dates did you go?
Ugh the cables that's where the girl recently died when they got caught in the rain. I would never climb that place way too dangerous
you are amazing
Where is the full dome
Great video! I loved your commentary. I just got back from a 10-day trip to the USA, which included Death Valley, Boundary Peak, Whitney, Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, and Shasta. Half Dome was definitely the highlight for me! It sure looks like you had a great day for your visit.
We chose to do Half Dome as a day-trip with the cables down to avoid the silly permit thing.

You’re bad ass 👊🏽🫶🏽
ANYONE who carries an overnight pack up to Little Yosemite Valley is a badass in my book.
Why are you hating on those cables? They look great. Dont forget you wouldnt be able to see the top without the many people who spent time and risked falling to get the first ones in. You were lucky. Remember that please.
Wait what😂😂 did you watch the video? I was totally psyched to be on the cables😂
I’ve never seen a video oh HD with cables up and no crowd. I’m truly shocked and confused.
If you get there later in the day (say, 6:00-7:00PM), there is NOBODY on the cables.
@@matthewstorm5188that’s ridiculously late getting there. I would imagine it’s pitch black when getting down and you’re camping somewhere close to sub dome.
@@miami3863 Coming down the cables isn’t really a big deal. In fact, some people who are afraid of heights may do better since you don’t see just how far the drop is. As for camping at the subdome, I would HATE to have to carry a heavy pack that far. Or on this trail at all. I just hike all the way back to Happy Isles. It’s really not that bad. It’s actually quite enjoyable.
❤❤️❤️
SO many Helllllll noooooooos
Do you have a way for us to contribute to your travels? Maybe a "buy me a coffee' account or a PayPal account or Patreon?
I don't yet! Coming soon hehe!
I coildnt even walk the rock stairs
they were so steep, not gonna lie!
You are a brave lady I must say......I am terrified of heights too.@@erin_elyse
only thing crazy is the crowds now. just my opinion but you would be better off without the nose ring and piercing as it has a bad connotation
Do you follow @Linnea & Akela ?? Y'all should hook up !
I don’t! But I will! Thanks :)))
I’m waiting until they get a tram to the top and back down! And even that may not be for everyone! 🚡 🤔🤯
