It's amazing how this guy makes everything clear. I've never heard of this test before, but I understood everything from a single viewing. I guess some people are just born to teach.
As a handy home mechanic that will fix just about anything on a car from head gaskets to diagnostics,, i have to say,, i have lots of respect for good professional mechanics which are hard to find,, i could never do this for a living working at a shop. I can do it,, i just take longer than the book says. Thx for the post
I've been building engines for about 10 years now and it I'd all the videos I've seen, you're probably one of the only guys that explained to others what exactly a rod knock looks like.
That was incredible. Best explanation and test ever, bar none! I now have a way to test the knock in my engine which I feel confident will work. Thanks so much!
This is the video I have been seeking for WEEKS, thank you. I have an 88 Accord with a knock but upon researching knocking sounds, there are different problems that sound the same to me. My husband swears it's the bearings which we have a rebuild kit but he's working full time all week, I do not have the knowledge to tear that far into this car myself lol. I am worried there is a bad rod or crankshaft bearings bc I do not have the ear to distinguish the differences in these sounds, they sound pretty much the same to me. And my exhaust is loose, no cat, it rattles along with this knock but I notice the engine knock right upon starting it, the exhaust doesn't usually rattle at that same second. Anyway, I'm glad I found this video, it helped me understand this issue WAY BETTER than my husband just telling me. Thanks!!
Dang does this make sense or what. At last some explanation instead of just the sound of rod knock. this might have just saved me lots of time and money making a specific diagnoses. Thanks very much
I have a feeling that I may have a knocking rod in our 11 HP Briggs Snapper RER. I will perform this test tomorrow and see what happens. Thank you, you are a scholar and a gentleman!
Awesome technique and presentation. I've been working on cars/trucks over 50 years now and rebuilt a few engines and never heard or thought of this clever technique. Came across your video at perfect time. I have an F150 w/5.4 Triton in garage. o2 sensor failed and motor hydro-locked on gasoline attempting to start. Cam Phaser knock can sound similar. I have cams and timing components out and just tonight scratching my head trying to make decision how to proceed whether to replace faulty phasers and bad chain tensioners, only to find I have bent rod/bad bearing after the fact. Will sleep good tonight. Thanks Schrodingers Box!
This video is amazing, the just right amount of humor, information, and visualization of what is going on. Though the image quality is ancient (as posted), WELL DONE all around!
This is quite clever and useful for a quick diagnostic with minimal invasion. I was just repairing an engine with a rodknock and it matches my experience as well. Thanks for the video.
So helpful! I don't know why you don't have over a million subscribers. I've learned more than what I would have on some other videos. It's about the methodology that you use and the logic that makes you such a knowledgeable mechanical engineer. When I get my next project car, I hope you are still around to tap your brain! Keep em coming! Thanks!
I'm just a newbie to this stuff and your channel, and you just helped me add another piece of knowledge into my diagnosing toolbox. love your channel and your explicit explanations and demonstrations.
Jose Oliveira Thanks man. Most of material really isn't newbie level but it should appeal to all people who use logic and reason regardless. It's the only way to approach things correctly.
very good video. my mechanic told me the noise from my engine was rod knock and proceeded to quote me a price for repair. i did your test and it passed. looking at removing pan now and checking cam bearing. good work!
this was an informative video. I learned more in 5 mins than I would of learned reading a manual. Thanks for uploading. 1988 Nissan 1.6L loud tapping noise on #2 cylinder? I'll try this tomorrow. Thanks again. Keep posting, I'll keep viewing.
I recall appreciate your videos. I am currently enrolled in school to become a mechanic and it is very difficult to understand sounds of motor problems from text books. These are some of the best videos on the Tube. Keep up the great work and I wish you much success.
Thanks for video perfect test to confirm terrible news. my ford 302 had an issues on #8 i wonder if there's a trend that the damage occurs on the furthest cylinder from the oil pump. (would have been smarter to test furthest to closest and save some time). thanks again for the time and effort you put in. I watch the adds through and click there links hoping you get a few more cents from the corporate machine.
Damn. Awesome video. Keep them coming! I wish we could have head that engine fire up to confirm its running noise. Lots of confusion on RUclips about that.
It's amazing how this guy makes everything clear. I've never heard of this test before, but I understood everything from a single viewing. I guess some people are just born to teach.
I still dont understand. Can u teach me
He is all about the “why!” That’s why I love this channel.
This video deserves an award. Self disinterest, everything about the topic, applause.
Wow. That is one great video.
I agree. You can tell that he cares more about informing people than anything else. He's also a great teacher.

I dont think he's a pro mechanic. I believe he is a microbiologist.
"when the bearings disintegrate into your oil you'll think Tinkerbell lives there" lol

You reminded me of a lesson I had 30 years ago! Backyard Mechanic, Shade Tree Mechanic or Teacher. No difference!
That is one of the most impressive ideas I've seen in a lot of years. The simplicity is amazing!
Thanks for your common sense approach to diagnosing this problem. I'll check out your other vids while I'm here. I'm glad I found you.
Thanks for the very descriptive troubleshooting guide. I’ll be doing this tomorrow on my 1997 Accord.
Best, most concise, and informative youtube video this watcher has seen.

Superb diagnosis, explanation and demonstration.
Use moly, ptfe is not good.
You should do it to prevent not to FIX. Lucas will form a gum in engine
This is quite clever and useful for a quick diagnostic with minimal invasion.
I was just repairing an engine with a rodknock and it matches my experience as well.
Thanks for the video.
I 2nd that this guy deserves an award, you can apply this to just about any engine! Great idea!

This video is as good and informative as the old army video explaining fluid coupling of a torque converter. Two thumbs up 👍👍 and a like 👏!
Very well done. You put and often over-explained issue into perfectly simple words. Thanks . And stay out of Schrodingers Box!
This clarifies for me the source of the knocking. Excellent tutorial, can't be any better. Thanks.

Travail Enligne Why would you possibly remove the pan to look at cam bearings?
Excellent presentation. Thanks Mr. Mechanic
Absolutely awesome video. You couldn't have made that any more simple to understand.
