Absolutely! Hyperion and Fall are the epitome of Science-fiction. Not two books, but a two-part book that renews the best tropes of SciFi. Can't wait to re-read them!🛸
All right, you said the D word, not I, but I was thinking it! And no it is not the be-all, end- of Science-Fiction. It's overblown by a fad factor among young adults who were into Fantasy up to now .
I read Hyperion last month and thought parts of it were genius. Some stories were amazing. I may give the Fall of Hyperion a shot since you enjoyed it. I read The Terror a few years ago and I enjoyed it much more than Hyperion. I read it in the dark of Winter and could hardly put it down. The stark realism of the descriptions of the conditions in that frozen hell were chilling and the characters were great. Makes me want to read it again. Thanks for the video.
If you liked The Terror more than Hyperion then I'm definitely going to prioritize it! The premise is intriguing and with all the snow outside, (Colorado) now would be the perfect time. 🥶
Funny ,I read Drood last winter and had the same experience. Now I'm reading Bleak House having been put on to Charles Dickens of all people by Dan Simmons. And I'm enjoying the heck out of it.
@@stephenmorton8017 Thats great. I love when reading one book creates a domino effect! Enjoy. The only Dickens I read was A Tale of two Cities and that was maybe 30 years ago.
@@stephenmorton8017 I, on the other hand, recently tried reading a book from a series I loved as a kid (early teen) and could not finish it. There is a time for everything.
On some days I even think the Endymion books are better than the Hyperion books. Most wouldn’t agree. Heck, I only agree half the time 😂. They are so different but man do I love them.
I´ve been putting on hold Hyperion for one and half years, and your passionate description about it, just made me took the book from the forgetten shelf and start reading it. Thanks!
So happy that u are loving 🥰 hyperion- cant wait for you to get to endymion section. That last books is honestly 🤯….. loving that u love it. Im not sure rest of simmons stuff can hold up to the cantos but i also plan to read ilium/olympos :) I think becky chambers novella- to b fortunate if taught is one of her best IMO. Hope you consider it.
Thanks, Whitney! I'll take a short break from the world of Hyperion and start the Endymion Duology sometime this spring, with Ilium/Olympus later in the year. Can't wait! I also want to look at Dan S.'s works outside the SF genre. I'm a fan of Becky's so I'll certainly continue with the Wayfarers and pick up To Be Thought... as well! So many good books to read. 😀
I agree 100%. Love the cover, easy to read! 🙌 Although, if I could get my hands on first edition hardcover… it would be amazing just to have it on the shelf.
I read Hyperion once. Loved it. But i could read it again …. Finally got a working paperback of of empire of silence (not mass paperback) so that may be my next series. Fun problem to have!!!! Great video. Keep them coming
Thanks! Empire of Silence was good. And book one shows so much promise for the series! I'll be reading Demon in White as soon as I can find a copy; it's not easy!
I really love Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion. The revelation of what the Ousters is superb, and the whole change of context about mainstream humanity and the AIs. Mmm. A relatively obscure Simmons recommendation: the novella Muse of Fire. It’s set fairly far in the future, where humanity has ventured into space and found ourselves just completely outclassed by aliens that might as well be gods. The narrator is part of theatre company that puts on Shakespeare plays for scattered colony worlds. He ends up learning things about our superiors that change everything.
Sounds fascinating, I’ll be looking for it. I love how Simmons seamlessly weaves hard SF concepts with classic works of literature: Keats, Homer, Shakespeare.
I read The Long Way in January, too! Loved it. Also, you're making me think I need to get around to reading other books in the Hyperion series. I've only read (and really enjoyed) the first one.
Hi, I recommend you consider reading The Fall of H. It does read differently from Hyperion, but not to its detriment. It's awesome; at least to me. 😃 The Long Way was Fun!
Hyperion is on my “TBR of shame” at this point. I just know I’m going to love it, and hearing your excitement has me more convinced! Happy reading, Bart!
Thanks Johanna. I know you’re reading more SF this year; no better book than Hyperion / Fall of Hyperion duology. I hope you get to it at some point this year and I enjoy it as much as I did. 🤞
@@bartsbookspace the only reason I’ve been putting it off is because I know that if I read book 1, I’ll have to read book 2. I might just read Hyperion anyway! 😅

@@bartsbookspace I haven't read him yet, but I have The Terror and the Hyperion duology. I have read Delaney, but not his scifi, and nothing I'd recommend. 😂
I agree with everything you said about the Hyperion cantos. You would probably like the Gap series by Donaldson and I would also recommend Surface Detail by Iain M.Banks.
I definitely want to start reading the Culture series this year. I have Look to Windward, Use of Weapons, Player of Games, and Hydrogen Sonata. I will look for Surface Detail. I have not heard much about The Gap series, but I'll do a bit of research. Thanks for your suggestions!
I've read each of those culture novels you've mentioned and I would recommend you read Use of Weapons last. It really jumps around. Happy reading! Subbed.
Welcome to Team Fall! 🔥 I read Nova by Delany and didjt connect with it as much as I hoped I would. I might try Babel-17 in the future. And I haven’t read Wayfarers yet but I plan to try it this year!
Hearing you rank Fall as your favorite of the 4 books was all the inspiration needed to start reading; Simmons took care of the rest. What a book! 🔥 I read Delaney’s Empire Star and thought it was wildly inventive, but Babel-17 was a miss for me, likely because I was not able to give the book the attention it deserves. Wayfarers is an easy, light and fun read. Enjoy!
I've read all 4 of the Hyp Cantos, but years ago, i should re-read then. I enjoyed the "greek" books, Ilium and Olympos. The 2nd Chambers book is even better than The Long Way. I read Babel 17 last year, it was OK, i probably need to re-read it. It reminded me of the Arrival movie/short story, with the power of language to change reality. 👍
Robin said the same about A Closed and Common Orbit! With you confirming his sentiment, I’ll be looking for the book. Thanks! I just finished Babel-17 and I already need to reread it. 😂
You've got me so pumped for Fall of Hyperion. I read Hyperion a long time ago so I think this year, like you, I'm going to re-read Hyperion then go on to Fall of Hyperion. Cheers.
