So glad you've helped them get shave ready. As a shavette lover, going to a straight was horrible. Tuggy, painful, slow. Didn't "get it", realized they often need work and maintenance, even brand new.
Love your videos Matt. I've been using a Dovo Best Quality 5/8 for over a year. When I purchased it I received a free honing and a follow up within the first year from my dealer, which I have taken advantage of. Since then I have also purchased an 8k/12k hone so I can fall back on my trade as a tool and die maker and save the cost of shipping and labour twice per year. Yes, shaving with a straight blade takes a little longer especially when, like me, you do multi passes. What the heck, I'm retired. When I am more limited to time I use my father's old Wilkinson double edge. As I also shave my head, that is what I generally use for that task. So far I have not done the Vincent Van Gogh but find that I knick my head more with the double edge than the Dovo. I usually stock my medicine cabinet with 3 or 4 different shaving soaps from different manufacturers with different scents and always use either a bristle or badger hair brush depending on the soap and generally use a pre shave as well. I call this process my "luxury shave" time. Keep the videos coming Matt. Entertaining and educational. Greetings from S. Ontario Canada
I don't think I will ever straight razor shave but I still love watching the video and I love seeing new products and I love learning the little tricks even if I might not ever use them,
Very good and informative shave! However, I tried a straight once and it was a self sacrifice....so I am humbled and know that a DE is for me. I use my favorite DE rzor, the Fatip Grande, and I get a BBS 2 pass shave evrytime, no nicks, cuts or ingrown hairs! Keep em coming, Matt I enjoy watching your informative shaves!
Thank you for this excellent video. What I really like is that you are showing, with excellent lighting and videography, how to shave with a straight razor. Your lathering up the Ariana & Evans soap makes me want to try that brand. Seeing you use a brand new Dovo really got my attention. I've read on other shaving websites -- in the fairly distant past -- that Dovo products were not shave ready. I am glad that has changed. I do own one 'straight razor', which I bought used, and it probably needs rehabbing because I neglected it. I only tried shaving with it once or twice. Perhaps I was not patient enough. It might be a block of rust now and ruined. It was quite some time ago. I think my main takeaway here is that if I try straight razor shaving once more, I will follow your advice and do it on a Saturday after my cup of tea and I'm relaxed and ready to be patient. If I destroyed my current straight razor, perhaps I'll buy a new one from you.
That looks absoluttely gorgeus and first dovo ive heard that its actually scary sharp out the box would absoluttely love a 6/8 or 7/8 truely shave ready razor
Great shave and great advice ! Ever since it was purchased it seems Dovo came up with good ideas. The Dovo primo seems to garner praise for its comfort and efficiency and they now ship their straight edges shave ready. Good times.
Matt, that laser etching is eye-catching. I had commented last week that a Laser etching option maybe a nice option to offer. I think offering modern, geometric designs like honey comb, diamond cross hatching and circle and dots. Then traditional metal etching designs synonymous with gun smith's like scrolling and acanthus designs would be cool. Maybe your ghost logo along with a texture design, perhaps Damascus look influences. Design options offered could be an in-house designer's project of passion creating limited time designs resulting in collectible, unique product. If inventory is to risky, do the Laser etching a.r.o. Those are some of my marketing $0.02 . Happy Friday.
Matt, you can be so corny and animated. I bet you are a great dad. Your kids are fortunate! As usual, this was a fun and informative review. Thank you!
Amazing shave, Matt! I also own some new Dovo razors and they are sharp out of the box!!! I also totally agree the mindfulness of a straight razor shave! It is my therapy
I got one of the last Thiers Issard Le-Grelot 6/8 Half Hollows before they stopped making them and I'm so glad I got it. I've got my own honing stones and good strops ( I buy my strop materials from you guys btw. Great prices. Great quality 👍). One thing I figured out pretty quickly was the huge difference prepping my skin before shaving makes. I shave only after showering and keep my bathroom " steamed ". This really does make a difference in the shave quality. I also solved the mirror fogging by just spraying my mirror with RainX windshield anti-fog 🤣 It works so no complaints.
A lot of people are shouting that razors usually don’t come shave ready, but I got the Facharbeit from Dovo 1.5 years ago and it was really sharp. And it kept that way for over a year only using normal stropping and occasionally a stropping paste. Dovo really does well I think.
Matt….dude you’ve got guts!!!! I have tried straight razor shaving ( two shavettes and a Gold Dollar straight razor) and I can tell you it’s not for me at least not yet. Great and scary video!!!!👍👍👍👍
I picked up an A&E set from the shop first day you had them, LOL. The new Dovos are cool looking, nice scales and the engraving on the blade is very cool looking
Just stared straight razor shaving using a 6/8” Thiers-Issard and I love it. Been using a DE Safety for many years and I thought it was time to try something different and change it up.
Nice video. Same grow pattern as me on the neck. That makes the beard really itchy when it has grown for some days, because that lower section of the neck is poking into the skin on the upper neck.
You do look like your routine is a bit rusty :) but good to do what feels comfortable and don’t be afraid to switch to a safety razor to keep it fun. I’ve noticed that using a straight once a week keeps up the routine and steadiness.
Totally agree with your vegal vs tallow views. I used to be a tallow guy but nowadays 2 of my top 3 bases are vegan. Funny how that works out. Both are great!
I find that for me Vegan is ideal in warmer months and Tallow in the winter. But from a lather perspective, both creat fantastic lathers, as long as the soap base was thought through!
Hi there, At 14:00 I see that blade so jumpy over your cheek... that's dangerous honestly. I will rather pay more and get a better one or take my time and make it quite a bit more sharper the cutting edge in order to avoid unnecessary accidents. The cameraman did a great job recording your videos. Thanks for sharing them!
Really considering a straight. Can you possibly do a video discussing/comparing the qualities, characteristics and "virtues" if you will, of carbon vs. stainless straight razors? Types of staniless or carbon steel one should look for, and maintenance involved, ease and difficulties of maintenance of each etc.? Does stainless requie different strops or hones? I know you've discussed carbon steel with regard to keeeping them oiled, not rinsing them in water etc.
Need to touch up my dovo. I been lazy and used my shavette for awhile. I like the stainless steel razors myself. Carbon steel is more prone to corrosion and it has a different feel to the shave
Hi Matt, It’s about time you tried our soaps 😆. Thank you for including us with your Dovo video. Jens is a great guy and has really transformed the company. I think $130 for that razor is a great price! Especially since it’s actually honed properly. Great job and thank you again! Ohhh one correction. Our Barbiere di Famiglia line is vegan. Have a great weekend!
@@Dimitrius001 Hi Dimitri’s, My grandfather (on father’s side) was from Sparta. My father was born here in the US and unfortunately did not learn the Greek language. He only learned some bad words, which he passed down to me 🤣
@@PeterCharkalis That’s awesome! My dad is originally from Sparta as well! No worries about not speaking Greek, it’s how you feel on the inside. And besides, the bad words are the best words. Question. I have an Ambassador and I bought the little maintenance kit that you sell that comes with the polishing cloth, the cleaning solution, and the lube. Is there any specific part on my Ambassador that I should use the lube on or is the lube really only for TTO razors?
Sigh... I'm just gonna have to pull my straight razors out, hone them and use them to shave again. I've not pulled one in more than two months now. Ya do have to take it slow. NO rushing, relax... Yeah.
I am not ashamed to say, nope… nope… I use Feather blades in a slant bar; but this video as my nerves on (no pun intended) edge. I’m sorry Matt, I keep expecting the birth of another scar.
A very good razor (the metal part). However, as a German, I am a little ashamed that this product has such inferior shells. After all, it's not available at a bargain price.
That sense of accomplishment is not slicing your face and not dying.
So glad you've helped them get shave ready. As a shavette lover, going to a straight was horrible. Tuggy, painful, slow. Didn't "get it", realized they often need work and maintenance, even brand new.
I just ordered a Feather Artist Club DX. Can't wait to get it, but am still itching for a traditional straight

Matt when A&E drops “Daniel Maullu Legacy”, go pick it up💪🏼 both soap and splash supposed to drop soon
Wow! I actually felt the tension as you shaved your neck.
The new Dovos do look impressive.
I had the Barbiere Classico, your 1955 runs rings around it in protection and slickness.
Great shave Matt, you actually shaved easier with your non dominant hand, impressive.

A&E's Ultima formula is less complex ingredient wise than their previous formula but I can't tell a difference. Both are great.

Matt I loved this video but I gotta ask, why do you often break the rule of letting water run onto the straight razor?
Just watched the rest of the video saw you answered it hahah
