- How to carve a Staff or Stang. A Magical tool, or simply a walking stick, here's how to create a beautiful staff for your journeys. Here's a few tips for carving if you're new to whittling at wood. It's a useful skill and can be used to add symbols and power to your magical tools. When you put your own energy into making the most beautiful tools you can, you are working with the tree spirits and imbuing your items with magic and charm
Please always be careful when using sharp knives, but with a few helpful tips it can become a skill you are proud of.
Old ways Pagan belief says when you create something a painting , a song , a staff or walking stick or what ever a clay bowl anything , a bit of your own essence is absorbed into that object and through the meditation and thought while carving a part of yourself is now attached to your staff. As always many thanks for another great video , Blessed Be to you ..
Yes, literally a little bit of your soul. That's why being creative can be so satisfying. You get to meet your own essence. Blessings
Probably why as a creative im allways so attached to what i create
Absolutely gorgeous! I adore working with wood. Something so gratifying about it. I usually lay a scrap piece of leather over my leg when holding my piece up against me for stability in case my knife accidentally slips. It hasn’t happened yet but there’s always that first time.
Oh I had a few cuts at first, nothing serious, just a few drops of blood, maybe cut my finger or something. Mind I remember my Mum and Dad letting me play with knives as kid and I still have the scars!! Lol!!! we live and learn. Haha.. yep, good advice, very important arteries in the legs, don't do it!
@@TheWitchInTheWoods I’m just someone who finds out things the hard way! 😂😂😂
@@TheWitchInTheWoods may I ask...do you have specific knives just for carving??? I was thinking of getting one soon. I would love to start carving more.
Loved this video, thank you! My silver birch staff found me not far from my front door and has been waiting for its transformation, now thanks to you i will get on with it very soon! 😍
nice work
I like this one because i collect walking sticks, staffs or even wands to make from some of the monuments i visit, a lot are in the middle of nowhere so not always possible but its a nice momento of sacred spaces
I'm sure, probably very sacred wood when you find it. Walking sticks are totally underrated in my opinion.
@@TheWitchInTheWoods Agreed, I'm getting near the age when I appreciate them
Oh this is so beautiful, thank you! I have been searching for mine in the woods.... I want to put a crystal at the top but I always stopped myself because I do not have your carving skills, you are inspiring me to give it a try!! Thank you, your channel is so beautiful!
Excellent, I'm so glad that I might be able to show someone skills they want but haven't tried before. Do let me know if you make something. Good luck, and I hope you find your staff!
Well done. Can't venture out without my shillelagh
thank you. Yes, and let no one challenge you while you have one!
Been wanting to know how to make these for ages. Thanks for another great educational and inspiring vlog 🍄🌿
You're welcome. Glad it has inspired you x
You did such a beautiful job with the carving. How lovely! I have been searching for a stang too for a while. I def want to wait until I discover the right piece of wood. I have just ordered Traditional Witchcraft by Gemma Gary actually - I read Silent as The Trees by Gemma Gary a few years ago as I'm in Devon and I found that soooo interesting too! 😊 💓
Ooh lovely, I've not read anything else by her, but she is a very good writer. I will have to devote some time to finishing this book and buying the next. Devon sounds lovely, there's a lot of book on Devon and West Country witchcraft. Is everyone a witch there? Sounds fun. Thanks for watching x
Beautiful! Thank You.
🙂thanks
The staff is just beautiful much much love from my antiant land 🦉🦋🌹🍀🌙
Thank you. Sending love back x💖🌸☘🌼
I'm just about to make my first stang and it is currently in my shed drying out. I don't actually know what wood it is sadly, I've been unable to identify it, but I found it on the ground and I knew it was for me instantly. It was literally in my path. I may never know what tree it's from, but I do know I will love it anyway! Thank you for this video, I am also new to woodwork so this video came along just when I needed it (like my stang)
Lovely, whatever wood it is, it's the wood for you. Sometimes you don't need to worry about the details, it's just something that appeared. Trust your instinct!
@@TheWitchInTheWoodsello ! I would love to have a little bit help please ! I have found two beautiful Hornbeam branches with wich i would like to make my own staffs . Though i was wondering what is a hornbeam staff good for, what are its properties, in witchcraft ? I am a beginner so thank you for any information! Blessed be!💚
@@tedhe9886 I'm afraid I'm not very familiar with Hornbeam, although I hear it has similar properties to beech.. a strong and powerful tree and often known as ironwood. At a guess I would say it is used for strength and wisdom, power even. A lovely find.
@@TheWitchInTheWoods Thank you very much ! I appreciate it! 💚
Looks absolutely beautiful
Thanks. I was surprised that it turned out so well! Really enjoyed doing it :)
Loved, Loved, Loved it! First time watching one of your videos and I was spellbound. Subscribed.
Thank you. Thanks for your kind comment and supporting the channel 💥💗💜
I was so inspired by this video and your skill at carving, I (finally) found a nice knife to work with. Can't wait for that special piece of wood to come my way! Meanwhile I'll start practicing on some other pieces of wood..
I really glad to hear that. Carving can be really satisfying and I'm so pleased you are trying it out. The satisfaction of being able to make your own magic pieces is well worth a few blisters. Good luck with your carving, and wishing you all the best.
Also, your carving is very beautiful and intuitive 🍃
Thanks very much. I was pleased with the way that one went !
Thanks for this! I am currently learning about trad craft and I want to make a stang
Excellent. Good luck with your stang. I do love mine, it's grown with me.
Lovely video and really useful information. I have been getting a strong feeling that I will soon find a stang, so I wanted to find out more about them. I am glad it led me to your channel, Thank you!
Lovely. Good luck with your stang, and thanks for watching
Same here for two years. I've been yarning for one and finally came across mine. I don't know which tree family it came from; however, I am drawn to it.
It's gorgeous!
Thank you ! I think it's got character. Very happy with it and want to make some more now.
@@TheWitchInTheWoods Did you teach yourself how to carve?
@@nancyuding6301 Not entirely. No someone showed me his whittling and explained how to do it when I was 20 or so, but I've found it a useful life skill...just in case you ever wondered how to make a so and so...
Love your channel, sorry I didn’t find it sooner. I made my staff from an Ash that was growing in my garden and sadly had to be cut down, I let it season then carved a bind rune into it.
That's a great idea go honour your tree. Ash is very powerful. I have just picked up a rather staunch branch from one huge King of the Woodland Ash Tree. It's waiting to be carved, but I think Ash is a great tree to work with.
I acquired a staff of old Appalachian grapevine....
the top has a beautiful deer antler. There was a
deep connection the moment I handled it.
Any information on Grape ?
Thank You....I lived in the forest-woods for many years
The happiest chapter of my life. PEACE.
I immediately thought of the Ogham Muin / Vine.. so I did a search, but I think I'll just send you a link to this because it would be a shame to paraphrase it. Wine Grape and Grail. We are at home in the trees I believe..livinglibraryblog.com/muin-grape/#:~:text=Muin%2C%20the%20eleventh%20letter%20of,even%20as%20a%20cultivated%20species.
Love your videos
Thank you
Beautiful job 👏😊
Thank you 😃
Fun & easy
Nice stang, I have also read Gemma’s book, a nice read as well. Take care.
Thank you! Yes, Gemma's book is refreshing amongst a lot of reitterated wicca manuals
🙏teşekkür ederim 💐😘
Rica ederim
i am not a witch but i am makeing a utility staff with spots to tie charms and trinkets to
I’m struggling to find a good piece of wood!! Would you recommend anywhere I can purchase the base staff and then do my own decoration
seriously I just googled sticks for sale.. and an advert came up on etsy for chesnut shaft shanks for staff making. Bit pricey, but they'll be nice wood.
Blessings.
I'm in the process of making my own staff with a crystal ball on top of it hidden in the root system, Gandalf The Grey style.
With a wood spirit and Celtic Triskel symbol carved on it.
@@sweetloveelmo that sounds awesome. I wouldn't mind one of those myself. Good luck with it, and it sounds amazing when it's done!
I found driftwood stick that I have sanded down and feels good but it has som cracks when I broke it down to size I didn’t bring any cutting tools with me that day so I will be looking for ways to make it stronger in those places where the cracks are at
Driftwood is already sculpted by the sea. Nice find.
I do not think there is any hard and fast rules you just know when the staff feels right for you in some magical systems . my staff is of ash with a , AMETHYST Iin the handle it feels right for me .PS lovely vid and nice work thank you 🌔
Thanks. Hmm, a crystal in the staff..I never thought of that. Beautiful. Yes, this staff feels special, just for the way it called to me. I'm looking forward to working with it. An ash staff would be good too, for the centre of a circle, I think.
This is a wonderful video ! Can some tell me what wood she is referring to for whether magic?? I couldn’t tell if she was saying ghost wood or something else ??
Loving gratitude to you all !
Hi. The wood for weather magic is Gorse.. a small shrubby tree with yellow flowers.. not sure if it grows everywhere, or just Britain. Each area has their own folklore about trees and wood I'm sure. Blessings x
Thank you 🌞I am just being called into crafting my own staff this was the first video I watched and i must say it was a very very wonderful start ! Thank you 🙏
@@CosmicFrequency9 Aw thank you! Good luck with your staff x A bit of carving is a wonderful skill to learn. My mate taught just by carving a few sticks we found. Once you have the hang of it, you can get really creative. 🙏
Hi there again how are you ? I’ve finally begun working with and crafting my wooden Arafat relic. I’m wondering if you know anything about coating in gold plating ?? If so do you know where I could get liquid gold to coat the staff ?? Thank you so much ! If there’s an email or easier way to communicate let me know 🙏✨
@@CosmicFrequency9 I think Gold Leaf is fairly easy to get hold of. Never used it...but I think you just stick it on somehow..
Very beautiful carvings on this Stang, do you at a later date need to rub it down with more linseed oil or just the one time? :)
Thanks. I think it's due a bit more linseed oil soon actually. It helps to give it another coat now and then. :)
@@TheWitchInTheWoods, you're very welcome! Thank you for the information. 😊
I think I accidently hit a redcap in the early morning hours with my car. I fear retaliation. Do you know how to keep them at bay?
May Jesus bless you all.
Beautiful xxx🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🦊🦇🐿🐇🐘🍀🍀🍀🌻
Did you make others?
No sadly I haven't. It would be nice to make a walking staff too.
@@TheWitchInTheWoods ah thats fair. i very much enjoy your videos.
@@vintageenthusiast23 Thank you x
Don't use a cotton cloth though, it may burst into flames!
😟best to wash cloths out with soapy water then
I think you should change it to a B
🤣
@@TheWitchInTheWoods Well i guess i was wrong let's change it to A Witch in the woods that can take a joke 🤣
@@georgeshotrodbarn2113 oh you are so witty.. I agree the B is silent
Too much damage to the wood.
You think? It's lasted well enough. Just add oil
