- The default speaker in this amp is Celestion Rocket 50 or H1265.
I had this second variant, and it didn't like it at all, especially the dirt sound. I bought the Tubescreamer with hope that it will give it some beef, but it didn't work. So I decided to swap the speaker with the legendary Celestion G12M "Greenback" Made in England from the second hand for 100$. Was it worth it? Check this out!
The samples might seem a little bit too long. Sorry for that. My first video btw.
My Gear:
Laney Cub 12R,
Ibanez Performer PF150,
Ibanez Tubescreamer TS7,
Fuzzilator (Earth Quaker Copy),
Superlux PRA 628 MKII (mic)
I have the same amp and changed speaker for WGS Retro 30. The sound is more open and middy, which I like personally. The stock speaker is just fine, but sounds sterile especially on dirt settings. I've changed the output transformer too. It's a really great amp for a low price!
To my ears the stock HH speaker sounded nicer.
I've bought a Laney Cub Super 12 for Christmas this year, and I was thinkin' 'bout swappin' the stock speaker out for a Greenback, and this has convinced me to do that, cause for the style of this amp which is more like a vintage Marshall Plexi, a greenback is the better speaker cause it takes the natural sound of the amp and smooths out the really, gnarly, biting sounds the stock speaker has, and the Cub Super range sounds like a hot rodded Marshall Plexi, so the Greenback is the much better soundin' speaker.
Have you done that?
@@fredepstein Not yet, but I will when I get around to it.
The stock HH speakers in this amp and the pair in the cub 212R make it sound boxy, as evident in this video especially when played with fuzz. The greenbacks really open up the sound.
I really like the stock HH in my old Cub12r.
actually both speakers had its own strong sides, I cannot say I absolutely preferred greenback. Btw, sounds different from my sound tests with greenback, but we have different microphones.
@@kostasl3358 I have greenback inside combo now. Fizzy sound is something that can annoy by its own, but can be good in the mix. Slash has rather fizzy sound if you listen to his isolated guitars. Marshall dsl is a goid example of fizzy sound that works great in the mix. But yeah, cub has it on high gain settings, therefore I use mooer black secret for lead tones, or Udaloff hi gain pedal.
I was just thinking I might like the Greenback better in person, but some of the drive tones sounded good recorded. I liked the clean from the greenback, and clean + TS better, but I think the stock H speaker would cut through a mix far better.
@@kostasl3358 can't stand fizzy sound does greenback get rid of them?
Just threw a V-Type in mine! It’s like a mix between a Greenback, Creamback, and V30! It’s nice and tight in the open back cabinet and has sweet highs. I would definitely recommend that if you ever choose to try something beside the Greenback
This amp has a huge potential! I think I will try some other tubes some day.
The greenback wins the cleans eazy but all the rest is for the laney i would say
This is very helpful, thanks for sharing! The Greenback tightens up those lows really well compared to the stock speaker, which is rather dark and tends to flab. The question would be, this or the G10 vintage? :)
To anyone who doesn't want to swap speakers, i'd suggest trying a Multi-Effects pedal that emulates amp models.. It radically changes the tone and can make a muddy sounding amp much more thight and clear.. It's a cheap alternative ;)
I spoke to soon I can hear the difference when you add the fuzz
After trying A LOT of different speakers with this amp, most of them originals, not reissues, like say an original EV M12 L in a thiele cab, black backs, Emi Legends, original V30s and T75s, G1265s, etc, besides the EV, for british tone by far the best was Eminence CV 75 and for american a Legend 1218 or old V30.
hardly worth spending half the cost of the amp (used) to achieve a bit more clarity on the bright channel
First riff sounds a lot like I Will by Radiohead
Made absolutely no difference to me maybe it’s sounding different in the room I’m listening on an iPad tablet
Do you need to solder when replacing the speaker in this amp or does it just have the solderless clips?
Hey Man, No soldering at all :) Good luck with The swap!
@@jimmytrojkovvsky2728 Thanks! Mine has a Rocket 50 in it which sounds ok but a bit too dull and murky. Just picked up a used Greenback G12M for about a third of the new price! Gonna try it out today
@@clintonmaher6930 so how did you like the greenback?
I just bought the laney 15r and now that I brought it home I am having trouble finding sweet spot in dirty sound. Theres a harshness I just cant rid of. Now thinking of changing speaker. The stock speaker is 65Watts why did you replace with a 25watt one?
Hey! Congratz with choosing Laney 15R :) Well I didn't know much about technical issues. It's more important to choose a speaker with same Ohm impendance. And to be honest this 25W is loud as much as 65W :)
I think it is like with setting up your Hi-Fi (Amp power vs Speakers power ). Some people would rather have similar power for amp and speakers, and some others rather have more Watt in speakers than amp.
@@jimmytrojkovvsky2728 does the greenback get rid of the dirty harshness and fizz?
@vracan It’s much better but it is still British Sound. Hate it or Love it. But the Greeback works nice with pedals. Worth to swap anyway
@@vracan Hi, did you fix the harshness on distorted level? I have the same problem.
@@Miko-nc4ej yup change speaker to celestion creamback! I also tried greenback and although it got better, it was the creamback that finally got rid of ALL the harshness.lovely marriage complete
My swap is for a Eminence Canabis Rex
Dude I have this amp and volume at 7 in 1w input already bleeds your ears
