As an atheist, Hitchens has been a hero of mine. THIS is one of the few areas where I have to depart from him. As a Veteran, I saw some of the horrors we visited upon the innocent people there in Iraq and Afghanistan. There was absolutely no reason for it other than for the profits or our war industry. I'm in the US and I'm deeply ashamed of my country and its foreign policies. Hitchens is completely wrong here and I'm very glad that Galloway is once again an MP and can speak for the weak and downtrodden. All our hopes are with you, George!

This is the morally foggy phase of Hitchens’ intellectual life…he was utterly wrong and I believe it was because he had many close personal friends in Iraq affected by Saddam’s regime and he really wanted the US’ lies to be true…he’s also a hero of mine prior to this point but I see him as a sad, deluded, figure just chugging legs of Koolaid in this phase…RIP Hitch

The trick of Hitchens's rhetoric is that he pretends the west has reluctantly found itself as a disinterested observer of atrocities committed by a wild orient with the choice to intervene or not, but it does so magnanimously on occasion despite the misgivings of a naive domestic populace. What this ignores is the history the west has in constructing, supporting, and protecting these villains when it suits them and only combating them when it suits them. While the individuals and regimes targetted may certainly "deserve justice" it only happens in support of a program of neoliberal globalization which can only work as a poisonous cure and will continue to perpetuate the disease it claims to cure.

Throughout his career he opposed American imperialism and saw both the avoidance and response to Iraq et al. case also imperalism -- at a certain point action and nonaction are both within the context of American imperialism's umbrella. He's not a gov. mouthpiece seeing as on numerous occasions he was against it, e.g., the Clintons and their almost entire geopolitics. Saddam, regardless of WMD's existence, was undoubtedly a tyrant that brutalized certain minorities; he was backed by the US into power (especially with the whole Iran-Iraq war) and eventually disturbed USA's geopolitical interests.

The truth. I lived in America for 5 years in the mid to late 90’s. Every time I was out in public or at work I would hear someone say,”the biggest mistake George Bush made was not finishing off Saddam when he had the chance”. This was in reference to driving Saddam out of Kuwait and you would literally hear it 3 times a day during the 90s. The Bush family name had been tarnished so when George W came into power, driven close to insanity by hearing this statement every day for 10years, his only aim was to clear his family name and get Saddam. Terrible but all the pain and suffering cause to so many people was just so little George W could say “Look Daddy. We got Saddam. I cleared the family name”
