  • Prom 41: Alexa Mason (soprano), Anoushka Shankar (sitar), Ravichandra Kulur (bansuri), Gaurav Mazumdar (sitar), Britten Sinfonia / Karen Kamensek
    About This Event
In the mid-1960s a rising star of Western classical music met the ‘Godfather’ of the Indian classical tradition. The result was a collision of musical worlds and - some 25 years later - a studio album that combined Glass’s American Minimalism with Shankar’s sitar and the traditions of Hindustani classical music.
A hypnotic flow of sound, blending cello, saxophone and other Western instruments with the glittering pulse of the sitar, Passages is presented here in its first complete live performance. The Britten Sinfonia and Karen Kamensek are joined by Shankar’s daughter, sitar virtuoso Anoushka Shankar.

For the past 30 years or so I have been enjoying the original "Passages" on CD, and I've never gotten tired of it. Watching this performance I realized for the first time that "Prashanti" is sort of a Hindustani "dueling banjos," with a riff battle between two sitar players, the bansuri player, and the vocalist. It's just so awesome!

@@ubir9743 I'll give it some thought. Passages is one of a kind, but I'll see what I can come up with.

Great to see and listen the Passages reborn again which had a deep influence in me. I am not in a position to comment but the present version did not evoke the same intense feeling and euphoria in me.

Music is blood line for us all.
I've been a follower of Ravi Shankar from the days "East Meets West". But he left a gift behind, Anushka. She makes me forget her dad. It's not going to be. But I also have concluded that she's way beyond her dad. If he was here, he'd agree with me.
This video is a good one. Fusion of music from different lands is a natural act for our earth. The ending piece, Raag Aiman, is awesome.

I bought "Passages" with my own money the day it came out, a very rare occurrence since I never had any money. But, I find that when the music is great enough, God buys it for me. The money comes...I am surprised at how beautiful the wind writing is. I never thought I would ever love a saxophone duet, but...

Wow, Passages was the first album I listened to, that had a western and Indian medley of musical styles and instruments. 2 Masters Philip Glass & Pt. Ravi Shankar transport the listener to a whimsical magical world with their music. So nice listening to this after all these years. Thanks to the Uploader!

Music starts at 3:32. Although, the intro is pretty cool. Anushka and the second movement start at 13:18.

Pandit Ravi Shankar Ji is reborn in the form of Anushka. She is the real virtuoso sitar player right now and nobody comes near. The same PASSAGES album I played 32 years back in Chennai India. At that time Anushka was a small energic kid. I am really happy this music was well played by her sitar. All participants are done their job good. Sekar (cellist of MSQ)

Tremendous follow-up to the East Meets West - R Shankar & Yehudi Menuhin from decades ago. Clearly, the musicians enjoyed this as much as the audience does - when was the last time you saw members of the orchestra animated with what they were contributing to!

Oh gosh!!! Anoushka is not from this world. Ravi would be so proud. And her accompanying musicians are fantastic. The two concerts Ravi did in our city, in the south of Brazil, so many years ago, were pure magic. Unforgettable. Anoushka kept up his musical level and inspiration, and has been applying some innovations too. What more can we want?

Is there a translation of the vocals - they were to mystic and soothing? What a wonderful talent in Ravi and his beautiful daughter, Anoushka - what a blessing for us.....

It's a prayer. I am only a bit surprised it's coming at the end of the performance. I am not complaining though - not at all. This was an excellent performance and conceived well. It's very difficult to blend 2 such diametrically different musical genres - Indian music is completely melody and rhythm oriented with little or no harmonic stuff going on.
Generally I think this kind of prayer is recited/ sung at the beginning of a performance/ function. I think this prayer was written and composed by the late Pandit Ravi Shankar - Anoushka Shankar"s father. I am not sure if he intended it to be at the very end of a performance.
      1. Hey Nath, hama para kripa kijiye.
Oh God bless us / have pity on us
      2. Door kara andkahar, gyan ka aloka dijiye
Take away /Remove all darkness, give us the supreme gift of eternal knowledge (gyan)
      ,
      3. hinsa dwesh lobha, krodh hamese chhin lijiye,
Take away violence, malice, anger and greed from our hearts/ consciousness
      4. manamey prem shanti bhar dijiye
Fill our hearts/ soul with love and peace

A rough translation: Oh Lord, have mercy on us. Take away the darkness and fill us with the light of knowledge. Snatch away the violence, antipathy, greed and anger from us. Fill our minds with love and peace.
