  • This seriously may be the best SUV in this class of vehicle! Subaru has absolutely knocked it out of the park with this car! Their all new 3 row SUV should be at the tip top of everyone shopping lists! This vehicle handles well, is comfortable, has light off road capabilities vs the other cars in the class, and it has some of the best responding safety features I have ever used! I hope you all enjoy this review, hit that like button if you did enjoy it and feel free to subscribe as well! Also, if you want to support my channel I have awesome shirts for sale underneath my video! Check em out! :)

    As always, great review, Forrest! The new Subaru Ascent definitely seems like a solid entry in the midsize 3-row crossover SUV segment. It offers attractive looks, a spacious cabin (with versatility that families need), and advanced technology (that consumers want). Once again, from one car reviewer to another, keep up the great work! Your content truly is very informative and thorough.

    Great review! I just recently purchased the Ascent and we also have a Crosstrek. I know you mentioned you wish they would have left out the paddle shifters, but personally I will not buy one that does not have the paddle shifters. From my experience, the paddle shifters in Subaru's are geared less towards fun manual shifting and geared more towards purposeful shifting. I use them when going down steep hills and when driving in inclement weather. I know some might say, "that's what x-mode is for," but what some might not know is x-mode only kicks in if you are driving under 18 mph.

    • @pictureboxfilm
      @pictureboxfilm 5 лет назад +3

      Yeah the shifters come in very handy for off road/snow etc and also steep mountains/hills, which is what many Subaru owners will often experience.

    I just wanted to say, my wife and I have been looking into the Ascent and are definitely going to purchase. We agree with your statements as we found them to be the same as our own takeaways from our test drive and inspection. We think this is a great family car. Also my wife loved your review. We have watched a good number of them in our research and yours by far had been the most enjoyable to watch and informative. Thanks for this review!

    I’ve had the Limited trim for a month. I love the interior space and safety features. I’m getting used to the CVT. It’s unpredictable at first, but you’ll get a hang of it. It’s quick for passing, and can cruise at the 80+mph range with ease. I wish they added front bumper proximity sensors considering this is a HUGE and TALL vehicle. Overall, I’m happy with it because of the usable (and spacious) 3rd row and the safety features. If you need a practical 3 row, the Ascent should be on your list.

    I am a woman five foot five. I sat in the third row last night behind my sons five eight and six one, respectively, and actually had plenty of leg room. I’m reassured that the third row is totally doable for all the non-six-footers in the family. I’d be very comfortable in it even in a long road trip. Granted, the middle of the bench is as hard as a rock. I’m very torn about having chosen the captains chairs for the second row, but it does make accessing the third row easier.

    Our new Ascent has a serious technical problem. The check engine light came on and all the safety features shut down. Once at 400 miles and now at 1,000 miles. Dealer service had to call in the Factory Tech. They think it might be a bad wire and are ordering a "bulkhead wiring harness". Sounds like a pretty serious issue. 2 weeks in the shop.

    Nice review! Only 1 thing. The paddle shifters are not for fun, they are very- very useful. The cvt works kind of an overdrive, so if you have to drive a lot in the mountains or on snowy roads , you can have stronger engine break.

    • @strictnonconformist7369
      @strictnonconformist7369 6 лет назад +1

      I live in the Seattle area and regularly deal with lots of steep hills and I concur: the paddle shifters are damned useful and the system is well-tuned for most cases you'd want to use them (more downshift for engine braking than upshifting is likely) with how it is triggered to disengage. I have a 2018 Outback Touring/3.6 and I've never found a need in regular driving for manual mode (not using paddle shifters) in 15,000 miles thus far, as longer drives on highways where I'd use cruise control (adaptive, never bothered with dumb cruise control: it works well enough it makes no sense to use traditional cruise control) along steep grades, it manages the speed nicely.

    This is the car that my wife and I have been waiting to see released. Now that the car is out, I've been watching a lot of reviews and most seem positive for this car. With that stated, I do have a few questions that I'm hoping you can help answer.
    First, you show that you were getting around 17 MPG. Is that primarily in-town driving or was that mixed driving? The car we currently have gets around 20 MPG with a V6 in mixed driving, so we would want to take this into consideration.
    Since this is a turbo-charged engine, is Subaru recommending the use of higher octane fuels?
    We were advised by Subaru of Plano to wait a year before purchasing the Ascent so Subaru can work out the kinks. Do you know if there are any major issues or service bulletins that have been reported with this car at the current time?
    Again, thanks for the review. I will also put a plug in for Hiley Subaru -- one of the best buying experiences I have ever had with any car dealership! I recommend buying from them if you are in or near the DFW area.

      Subaru is also very good at taking care of their customers. If there are kinks, I'd be more confident in suabaru resolving them than most manufacturers. There were some ascents that had a spot weld missed on the b piller due to a software malfunction on the robots, and subaru quickly identified and replaced all affected ascents

      @ D Jay T...yes, I totally agree with this, that Subaru is also very good at taking care of their customers. I'm looking around for my next SUV purchase. I'm looking at the Ascent, Honda Pilot, Toyota 4Runner and the Mazda CX-9. I'm looking at the ascent, here's part of the reason why: My uncle has a 2014 Subaru Forrester XT turbo and he had problems with the transmission.He took it to the Subaru dealer and they wanted 3k to replace the transmission, there was something wrong with it, and it was out of warranty. My uncle said he couldn't pay that amount, the person he deals with said to him on the phone, "Let me see what I can do for you", he came back on the phone and said, "Since you've been a great customer all along, the boss said there will be no charge"...my uncle was so happy, and he's only been to the dealer for oil changes.And a different time all the lights on the dashboard would come on, so uncle took it in, they kept it for 2 days and gave him a nice rental for free, a Nissan Murano, nice car!...they found out several wires had been chewed by a rat, or ??...this was all free of charge too...so I'm kinda looking at getting the Ascent, although I kind of really want the 4runner,lol.

    Hey Forrest, great review as usual! I'm having a hard time deciding between the Ascent, Highlander, and CX9, (top of the line for each). Leaning towards the Ascent though. I like the CX9 styling, but I see very mixed reviews on infotainment, and smaller cargo I think. Love Highlander reliability, but it's got very dated dash and no apple carplay I believe. The Ascent seems to be a great balance for me, but I'm concerned about long term CVT and turbo engine reliability, and also first model year reliability. Help!! Thanks

      mrk grc I have Pilot 2017 and Outback 2017. (I bought Pilot first). I am much more satisfied with my Outback. I used to be a Honda fan (had CRV before), but nit sure now because I am very dissapointed with the CVT transmission of Pilot (jerky, etc).
      I did drive test many SUV brands (CRV, Xtrail, Cx5, Santa Fe, Rav4, etc) before buying the second one, and I found that Outback is the best especially the tranmission though it is also CVT. Drivability is also very good. The only drawback of Outback for some people’s are maybe the styling, but it is just the matter of taste.

    The Ascent is an oversize Outback. Most of the controls that I see are the same as my 2018 Outback Premium 2.5i. The only thing that I would not like about the Ascent is the gas mileage. The old H6 gets the same mileage as the new 2.4 turbo.

    • @roberttaylor4918
      @roberttaylor4918 5 лет назад +3

      Same gas mileage on a larger vehicle is considered a plus. Its 700 pounds heavier, its less aerodynamic so more wind resistance and it puts out more power and can hold up to 3 more people. If you put the 2.4 turbo from the Ascent into the outback you will get more power than the H6 and better mileage. I honestly think the 2.4 turbo will replace the aging H6.

      AS1313 not really. The people that drive this thing won’t tow 5,000 lbs and haul 7/8 passengers everyday. The turbo can handle the occasional tow and packed seats. Overall reliability will be only known in the next 5 years.

    This Subaru was on my list as a new family car. After watch a bunch reviews and videos, I notice that it don't have the rear entertainment system for kids. For the price what it is for a limited kind of disappointment. Now I'm leading towards the 2019 Honda Pilot now instead.

      Evo X stick with the pilot. I was interested in this till I found out it got cvt, turbo 4 for a heavy van and it is a new product meaning there will be bugs

      Rear entertainment is vanishing. Now adays everyone just uses their tablets or phones. Get a tablet for each kid and put holders on the back seat, cheaper and better quality, and easier to replace than ingrated screens. Plus you wont have to pay interest on that option if you finance

    Major transmission failures (they fail about every 10K miles) and major electrical problems.

      The problem only affected a few cars (around 200 and most of those never reached a customer) and instead of attempting a fix, Subaru gave a new car to everyone who owned one of the faulty vehicles. Problem was a computer glitch in one of the welding robots. QC picked up the problem and fixed it. All affected vehicles were destroyed.
