this is one of these videos why I started with Ableton. respect and love
phacts
i always come back to this video.
Fred Civil I don't know why but this shit inspire me alot. My tracks sounds way better and I can get my workflow going when I see things like this before I start producing..
yeaa me too
I thought I was the only one! Ski put me up on Ableton Live!
same
yeah this vibe makes my day better.
9 Years!? Later & still this is still a beat of a video. Captured real hip hop vibe & a freestyle at the end as well. This video was too pure it should have a million. That freestyle and vibe at the end was just too much. Pure New York hip hop vibe.
14 years and still kicking , i keep coming back!
Ski - in this instant gratification world, it's hard to even finish a single video all the way through ... this one held my attention. well done, mate.
so true
The freestyle at the end is brilliant
"Just massage it until the groove feels right" -Skibeats. I love it.
i dont care what year this was posted still glad to see a TV like that 8:03
This view man....the dried out rain on the windows ....imagine flippin` some beatz in front of that face of New York ......this clip is so inspiring man ....Peace to my man SKI . You are one of the few great ones that still do it !
Damn this is some next level inspirational shit
My goodness, 7yrs later the beat still carries weight!
Ski! Underrated!
Still got flow from 'Original Flavor' days!
This man has serious personality and superior skill! Fantastic video.
I never thought about freezing my tracks to warp and fix the timing 😓😓 dis man a genius
Damn idk if u built for this then
true, as a music maker myself, i love samples but i also love making my own sounds, but both for some reason are equally as rewarding, to sample another record takes just as much love and time as making your own.
Just like ski, I finally bit the bullet and learned ableton. The way it works with midi loops and audio loops is insane!!! I finished a full song las night in about 4 hours. Love how quick it is.
I used midi in ableton. Record samples passing through my Mpc and added recorded stuff over the top.
After u had all my loops setup I midi mapped the play loop and stop loop functions to my keyboard and then recorded my performance.
Way more fun than copy and pasting midi to crest song structure.
I felt like a real musician again!!!! Not a computer tweeker
Thanks ableton. I am a firm believer in your program.
All I know is pro tools. This is day 2 of Ableton and man, Ableton is the it. Warping is going to turn me into superman. Like Ski said, just massage the warp markers. The creativity is endless. Thanks Ski. Yo boi Smoove Hand Luke
it lookst like he is rapping when he is explaining it to us lol
sounds*
he's a rapper too, if u check Original Flavor's album "Beyond Flavor" (90's) (in wich u could find the first feat of Jay Z too!) he rapped n produced :)
That's hiphop
Yes, he is amazing!! He is teaching and mentoring current and future musicians! On top of being so talented, he is simply a great guy!
sample is "I want you" by Gato Barbieri, from the album "Caliente!"
Thanks a lot my friend.
Do you know the sample at 0:38?
@@danewav1 i'm looking for that sample since 2010
@@merdavera clyp.it/utwtn2ts?fbclid=IwAR3IyxhyRASkCTRnSvQ1fyZHwxmldwbhmKSCGkmJ2NvoUEGyuBpnriQFgWQ here is the clip that ski beatz used in the video
'Just massage it 'til it feels right'.
Hell yes brother. Best video on Live out there to this day
I remeber seeing this video when it first came out. Can't believe 12 years have passed ever since.
Man, I honestly owe you my career so I just wanted to come here and thank you for the inspiration, God Bless!
Savage beats, personality and freestyle !! Effortless mastery
Love this guy ! so honest fresh and enthusiastic .. bravo Ableton ! & thanks Ski Beats..
This guy is cool! He's got a small old square 15" screen and check out his TV as well!?
Who needs 55" LED TVs and dual 24" widescreen monitors! Old school all the way!! ;-)
chumbo i need a larger screen because i get very anxious when i have to click through everything to get to 1 small thing on fl studio. But when i use ableton live its a little better.
was thinking the same thing but had to cut him some slack he made me use ableton like never before its not what you have but what you can do.
I love Ableton Live software! This software is magic in the making once you get it done.
down*
I'm watching all your videos and they are dope. Helps inspire my own beats!
U also my inspiration
Right?! Ski Beatz is amazing!
swear to god ive watched this video at least 5 times and i learn something new every time i watch it.
This man deserves so much more exposure he is such a beast!
MAN...VERY INSPIRING. LOVE HOW HE CLOSES HIS EYES WHEN GETTING INTO THE GROOVE!
This is an excellent vid. I love how he WALKED through his process. Real beatmakers do just that. not the Kanye's of the world living through someone else's work.
ive been with reason and MPCs for 7 and 15+ years respectively...got ableton 9 a month ago and im never lookin' back...its got everything i ever wanted in a daw!
Thanks for keeping this video up I always come back to it
Ableton is amazing.
Ski takes it to another level tho. Love his sample choices and chopping. Great drums too. Such a good producer.
valuable info! i'm also more of a hardware guy, having a whole analog studio but also an official version of live 8. i've been using live with hardware for gigs since 2004. it's hard to just only stick with hardware these days eventhough all of my sound comes from analog gear. ext. midi and ableton still suck very hard, logic is more stable but as audio program it is great and it's great to see good producers showing peeps how to flexibily use this
people like ski beatz and lex luger are the real men behind the music, no disrespect to jay z or any of those rappers but they would be no where without people like this, putting in the man hours to make beats and put everything together
dude you should make some more tutorials like this. Theres so many bad tutorials on youtube with crappy screen capture software and people who mumble or take forever to say one thing. You explain things pretty clearly and your studio is fucking awesome by the way.
I have that cream white skully, it's an Ableton hat. Got it when I worked for Guitar Center on 14th in NYC selling studio gear and pro audio
Endless what you can do in Ableton live 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Thank you Ableton and Ski Beatz
So glad i switched to Ableton Live from FL Studio
+Hi-Teck Beats - HIP HOP BEATS / RAP INSTRUMENTALS I'm here to see if I should switch.. It's looking like I might make the switch too
+Nola Vibes You will not be disappointed brother, I promise
you. Ableton Live is a "beast of a DAW" that I’m glad to have discovered. On top
of that, it is real easy to learn.
+Frequency of Love Sure. And it looks and feels more professional.
Hi-Teck Beats I started making beats almost two months ago and I just started using Ableton a couple of days ago. It's gonna take me some time to get use to it. In my opinion FL Studio is easier to use then Ableton.
My best advice to you is, do what's best for you because to be honest with you, I have gone back to FL Studio ever since they uped their game with v12 and I don't think I will ever leave FL Studio again.
Got this ski beatz mix tape probably 7 years ago and it was him rapping on his own beats. The raps weren't very good but I still bumped it all the time cuz the beats were so damn sick
thes dude is ill prol one of the most underrated producers for real
Such an inspirational video. I wanna go straight to the studio and create some music!
your piano part starting at 3:12 is TRULY superb. well done, man.
I am a skinny white boy who loves rare groove breaks and Linn Drums and you have made my day. God Bless. talent / Tech / Soul / Skill ... Song : )
I prolly watched this back when it dropped, "Hello darkness, my old friend"
WHAT!!! I can just freeze and drag... well, I've been doing THAT the hard way. Between that and the slice presets... this video just changed my whole approach. Woooooooow. Thanx.
that 12inch screen :)
I know, I feel like donating a 34" ultrawide screen to him to help speed up the dudes process, so he can produce quicker! Dope beats!
13 years later, this is still an amazing tutorial. 🤔👀💯🫡🔥
@McGatts Agreed. coming from a sports and racing background more so then beat making. People stand by whatever product they normally start with. You can make anything with anything. At the end of the day you get to the same common goal... a fast car and winning races lol. I use FL Studio with a M-Audio Axiom 25... I got a MPC1000 on the way just because I want to learn to use one.
He makes it look so easy.
it is if u follow his instructions, and download his preset
dead presidents is one of the greatest beats ever made
Personally, when I make a drum kit I find it easiest to put my samples in a drum rack first, then edit and save each of them as a preset in my library using the save button (next to the Hot Swap on the sample's device). For fx and other one-shots I just load them into the Sampler Simpler and do the same from there. The library works like an explorer window so organizing things is pretty simple too. Hope this answer helps.
Loving the PS2 off to the side! This has convinced me to get Ableton live.
ha! i peeped that too!
I found this by chance and its exactly what I needed. Awesome tips
this is one of the most helpful videos i have seen for abelton so far thanks man
Thats dope how he Double Warps it - Resampling the original chop, very innovative
Great freestyle at the end hahaha, the best part!
@uzefulidiot Well you can use the Slicex in the same way that Ski is using the warp markers here. But if say u wanna take just a loop or use 2 small chops. Use the edison to find chop the sounds then drag them into a track. Then no matter what the tempo you can time stretch to match the bpm perfectly without having to sit there and warp by hand.
after watching these videos i feel i need to take producing to the next level with ableton
this video influenced me a lot when i started making beats. thx skibeatz
That's sick how he sliced the samples so quickly using the warp markers... I may have to buy Ableton Live just for the sampler.
To all you out there wit the HATE in your heart.....Those who hate can't DO....PERIOD...Ski Beats made music when you were still in pampers....REALLY
just goes to show all these up n comers with 1000's of dollars in equipment and screens is un neccessary... ski is a legend in the beat game
@bkdv it's already built into live... just open the groove pool, click the hot-swap, and your grooves folder should automatically open up in the browser. From there click the MPC folder and select MPC Swing 16 60 and like he says "massage" it a lil bit.
this video is great,,thanks ski,,if you know a little bit bout ableton,, must watch,,,it help me kinda connect all the dots,,and its is rite to the point,,,,,it helped me so much,,,,n the beat is dope
perfect atmosphere! I like it a lot. Thank you!
wow thats a nice set up with a nice view. Imagine makin a beat a night with the city lights in the back
his studio is beautiful
"I hate seeing these guys living in basic apartments." Damn right, without producers its just poetry, Jay Z is the 500 million man how many poets are worth 500 million, fuck that how many poets have 1 million, the production is the heart and sole of any hip hop track, they should get more than the rappers.
life style of a successful producers seems to be the best.
nice video. simple but effective. i watched it a few times now
Nice filming on this video, love the look.
uh yeah so he said.. he spent month on this.. I had to spend a few years.. to come back to this to fluently figure out what he was doing.. thanks again.
Sampling is a whole art form in it self
Man that's a sick view.
@Smackthegreat word. dead presidents is my all time favourite hip hop beat. soulful
I experimented with Ableton a few years ago and its a great program plus the stock sounds are incredible by themselves - I will always be an FL dude though thats the program I started on and it don't matter what piece of equipment i got or get - Everything revolves around FL in my studio! - But if your looking into another program try Ableton you won't be disappointed
@OnlyOmari I've had an MPC 2000xl and a Maschine. They're different. I liked some features of both, but ultimately decided to go w/the MPC 4000 and Komplete 6 and cubase and going to grab Ableton Suite 8.Not to mention my other hardware and software synths, comps, mic pres etc. It's all preference because even the openlabs Neko (Skibeats is using one in this video) can't do everything, yes I had one of those too, lol. No one program/or hardware machine can do it all. Use whatever works for you..
Ski Beats! Good gracious that is a banga!
I really think he found the easiest way to slice samples...dope method!!
amazingly inspiring vid... Makes me want to go and dig through gazzilions of vinyl to find something that sounds similar to this :)
Ski is such an amazing producer IMO
SKI BEATS IS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR....AHHHHHH
@bkdv its in the groove pool of ableton. In the file browser of Ableton, go to ableton->library->groove->mpc...done!
@shadoprevent totally agree, i have both pro tools and ableton and ableton wins by far. I keep pro tools around cause it came with a sound card you can plug actual instruments/ mics into and record it directly pro tools no problem. All the plug ins on ableton are amazing and i can tell its going to take a long time to figure all of it out.
@DecemberInJuly I do but maybe he don't mind about the size of his apartment. He's got a fantastic view out his window and I guess if I lived there that would be where my focus and inspiration comes from.
I think a lot of people are trying to say that you can take what you have and if you're creative enough you can make magic happen from the most basic sources. The creativity is within you, not in the equipment you use or your surroundings.
That beat @ 0:32 seconds Is Fire 🔥🔥🔥
This video is a classic now wow
I HAVE TO LEARN IT!
Maan, you're a monster! This beat was insaaane! SSWAG!
Now that’s hip hop refreshing
Thanks for the Preset. Much appreciated.
what a Brilliant mind & yet still such a modest producer - does it all with nothing : : don't get more realer than that : :
I like this guys attitude.
@dag451 Good looking out my man - i finally figured this out recently after watching another video on youtube. I actually didnt have a Slicing folder in the Defaults folder so i created one and dropped the preset in to there and voila it worked when i sliced to new midi.
IMO The loop is 'off' because he has done everything by ear and feel up until this point. He has not gotten caught up into the details yet. When he goes to add percussion the timing and groove becomes more vital. Also notice that he did not warp every single transient after freezing it. Just the ones to make it flow right to his ear. Even on this level he is not going for a full out quantize but rather carving the groove that feels right to him.
Essential IMO, for getting things swinging nice.
Yesir, that was wicked!
Nice! I like his workflow - freakin' FAST!
THANKS I LEARN SOMETHING NEW TODAY . KEEP JAMS COMMIN SKI
yeah, that beat at 0:32 has a great dramatic edge to it....been looking for which song he uses it in.
I've seen people use the Arrangement view with a Drum rack and slice their sample and drop it in the Drum Rack, which is fine...at the end of the day its all about a persons preference, for me I like ski's method.
Wow..This is crazy I have abelton 6,7, and,8 and have yet to use it. Guess i'm about to do right now... Mess around with abelton live! GREAT VIDEO!!!
That was amazing. It even had beauty to it.
