  • Starting Monday, the Metro Transit Police Department will be taking additional steps to address fare evasion in the District following the passage of the Secure DC Bill. Paying your fare on Metrorail and Metrobus isn’t just a good idea - it’s the law. #wmata

I guess Metro finally got sick and tired of watching teens leapfrogging over the turnstiles instead of just paying the fare.

Not only teenagers steal rides; big people do the same things time after time.

That is the New York City way of handling the fare evasion problem. When fare evaders are requested to present identification to law enforcement and do not have any identification or have identification and choose not to show as required, the Metro police can conduct arrests as possible. Metro needs to raise the fine of fare evasion in District of Columbia to $100.00, just like in the other states.

I remember in like 2019 or 2020 I went to West falls church station to record some trains and the guard came up and let us in because we weren’t getting on the train.

Watch out for Problematic Friendships who are youths and teens that are complying other friends to do so because they think that jumping over fare gates, running through fare gates before it closes or refusing to pay the bus fare is a cool move to take.

Ok and if they do t pay it what happens? And also I see officers who just tell people to go back and pay rather than issuing the citation which they should be doing with every single offender

So now maybe I can feel like less of a chump for always paying.

Nah, no one needs to feel like a chump. Rather, you dont have to feel like a loser for gate jumping. Much better scenario.

This is such BS.. the Metro should be 100% free to use and this crap just hurts those that can't pay. This also makes the metro a lot less accessible.

Maybe you should look at the text at 0:31. WMATA needs money to operate by the way, or else they wouldn't exist. We're lucky to have a metro system at all.

If the Washington Metro bus and train fares must be free, then its rapid transit system needs no maintenance at all. Maintenance costs are high just like the costs of consumer goods and services rise.

No, the system the not be free. Nothing is free in life. If you want to use the system, you pay just like everyone else. If you’re poor, get a job and live within your means. People want stuff to be free but don’t think about the costs of running the system as the comments above me mentioned.

    • @Markjenson1894

Wrong. By reducing the nimber of losers who jump over the gate, it lessens the crime on the metro and reduces the budget gap that the metro is already facing. Don't think that you're so entitled that you don't have to pay for something that everyone else does.
