From the experience that my band had with these two pedals, the biggest difference between the two is latency and the tracking speed. Myself and the other guitar player both bought the Drop, the bass player bought the Pitchfork. At first they seemed about the same, until we started playing Hysteria by Muse. The latency was just bad enough on the Pitchfork that doing that really fast Bass Run for the whole song for hysteria was practically impossible. Needless to say our bass player took the Pitchfork back and bought the Drop.
I know this is an old comment but I've literally been debating the same two pedals for the same song (among a couple others) and this comment clinched it for me.
@coplepk04 Glad I could help! I still have the Drop pedal all this time later. It's a staple on my pedal board. It's not perfect, it does save off a little high end, especially the lower you go. But half step and whole step down works PERFECT in a live setting.
Thanks for the video. I just ordered The Drop. It seems to be the better choice if you just want to use it to downtune your guitar. I play in a metal cover band and I'm getting tired of lugging around five guitars in different tunings. I think this wonderful tool will make my life easier.
Dude! the exact same reason why i just got one! So f*ckin tired of breaking my back carrying several guitars. But i went for the pitchfork bc I like all the extra options for pitch shifting in some other bands
The only problem with Digitech Drop is the sound. I don't know it feels like it loses Highs and gain. If you compare how long sound come from one string hit you will hear a difference. It happends only if you turn it ON even on the first tone down. That's realy bad, but still nice to have for Easy Tunning down.
Finally! A proper shootout between the two. I own the Pitch Fork pedal, and I have to say the Drop sounds much better. Especially with the cleans. It's as if some of the sonic range isn't transformed on the Pitch Fork, which makes it sound really weird when playing cleans. But still, a great pedal for metal which I'm using all the time thanks to you when I practice at home. Rock on mate.
I have both pedals. For drop tuning, in general, the Digitech works much better, except for the full octave where I personally find my EHX a little better (the sound, not the latency). The EHX has a tad little more latency, and a tendency to "chorus" a bit. So, I generally use the Digitech for drop tuning and the EHX for "other types of harmonizing effects" ... I generally use the EHX together with a Strymon Lex to "sort of" emulate a Hammond organ with a Leslie, and it works pretty well (I generally put one octave up and one down added to the dry, or one fifth up and one fifth down added to the dry, and I add a tiny little bit of "dirt" to my tone).
Most will say the Digitech sounds better, and I agree. One thing to mention: you can get the Digi Drop effect built into a Whammy pedal, which they sell as the Whammy DT. But, it is even better, because not only does it drop down 7 1/2-steps, the Whammy DT also lets you capo up 7 1/2-steps too. SO, it is up and down 7 1/2 steps, and you get the Whammy effects too. I mention this because on the auction sites I see the Drop going for $120+, and you can score a Whammy DT for $20-$30 more if you are patient and wait for one to go cheap (I paid $144). I also looked at the Morpheus, seems like that is way behind these 2 offerings. I also have a Peavey AT-200 which also lets you drop down and capo up 12 1/2-steps. Line 6 has the Variax which also has custom tunings, I know the default offers 1/2 and full step down, but with their Workbench HD software, you can make custom tunings and drop down or up even more. Lot's of ways to skin the alt-tuning cat I guess...
Good point but down tuning is what most seem to be concerned with. If you own a Floyd Rose guitar, it takes 5 seconds to put a capo on. It takes much longer to re-tune the entire guitar down. The best bang for the buck in my opinion is the Drop pedal. Keep a capo handy for up tuning. The only benefit I can see with the Pitch Fork is the blending of octaves up and down. The Drop has the octave + dry though.
Man oh man... so... I been using the EHX Pitchfork for months... Great pedal. Yet, in person, there is a very noticeable tone difference when the Pitchfork engages. And I mean especially on lower tunings it just sounds so artificial. So I decided to give the Digitech DROP a try... Ordered it and it came in yesterday, and holy shit dude... it is a night and day difference, the Digitech definitely has more of a volume drop where as the EHX has more sustain and you don’t really lose any volume at all.... BUT... the Digitech is far, far more transparent. And I actually can appreciate the small drop in volume, it’s a small price to pay for a better, more natural tone. Digitech is better IMO. It’s way more dynamic and transparent to me man. But the EHX is cheaper and does the job just fine if you don’t mind a bit of synth along with your ‘B’ Standard tune.... But for me, it’s something I could not work around🤷🏻♂️
Isn't the 'drop' meant for dropping? I'd assume it would be much better at that. The Pitch Fork is better for doing other stuff, like going up in octaves and doing dual pitch shifting with your dry signal blended in.
The Drop sounds vastly superior. Just like the dry tone but lower. The PitchFork does not sound dry even with the blend knob all the way up. It seems to be adding a boxy reverb ambiance to the dry tone. But I guess the comparison is a bit unfair as the PitchFork can do much more than the Drop.
Alot of people complaining about the EHX not having any dry sound at all, which is mostly because turning the blend nob all the way on the PF makes the sound wetter not drier. Personally I think that adds to the versatility of the pedal because i get to control how much of the wet signal i want, but that's just me.
No drop in volume with the Drop. The problem is the demo was done with the Drop after the distortion pedal. ALWAYS put your pitch-shifting pedals as early in your chain as possible (preferably right after your input buffer, but vintage wahs and fuzzes may need to go first).
A lot of people find the drop is much noisier in front of dirt and especially fuzz. It honestly tracks really well after drive/fuzz and, again, cuts way down on the hum
@@michaelpacinus242 Don't have the Drop ,but I have a pitchfork after dirt on a board, and it sounds fine. New board has a Ricochet before dirt ,and I plan on testing this noise theory .
I have the Drop pedal, use it at practice and gigs. Some people are complaining about a drop in volume, and I have never experienced this at all. Maybe it has something to do with how he's got it hooked up. Mine is the EXACT SAME VOLUME whether engaged or disengaged. Mine sits 2nd in chain after the Wah pedal. No tracking issues, no volume drop.
Probably because you use itu after wah which serve as buffer while other use it directly from guitar, if this the case then the drop is caused by low (not high enough) input impedance of the drop pedal.
I've had both of these pedals. They are both excellent pedals, it just really depends on what application you're using them in. The Pitch Fork is great if you want to to be able to do multi-voiced harmony parts with one guitar or achieve those Morello'esq whammy lead lines. Otherwise, the Drop is far superior when it comes to just simply being able to droptune or change the pitch of your signal. I found that the Pitchfork tends to introduce too much latency and a strange, almost 'out of phase' quality to the signal if you are using it for drop tunings.
I own the Pitch fork. Really good. Like any pitch dropping equipment there is some imperfection when over processed... but part of thar is figuring out the best place to put it in the chain. The reason the pitchfork is better than the drop is simple... You can use the pitchfork as an octaver / POG / chorus and wammy as well as simple drop tunong. Also has expression out and latch/unlatched switch.
Thanks for the review, I believe these are still the best two in the market so far, although IMO their successor will beat them easily due to the tone and latency are highly depends on the power of chip.
I have both and used them on both electric and acoustic pedal boards. The sound clarity/quality/latency is way better on the digitech drop. The only reason why I still use the pitch fork is that the power draw is way less and my pedal boards run on the Volto battery packs.
I'd say that advice solves a lot of problems. Simon, I was jumping around through the vid and heard a lot of cool tones. I think they have a setting where you can get just the low octave and it in essence becomes a bass. I do a live looping show and while I love my guitar synth, stray noises get frustrating. I use the bass modeling on it a lot, and was wondering if one of these might be a good replacement. I'm not trying to pimp my page out here, but if you go over to my page, you'll get an idea of how I use it. Sounds like you know this gear a lot better than I do, so I'm throwing myself at your feet on this one, my man. Me and my ADHD will try to give all 14 minutes a listen.
Right off the bat I noticed that the Pitch Fork has way too much compression. It is amplifying noises like the pick hitting the strings that the Drop is ignoring. I have the Drop on my board.
I bought the Drop for $100 used in 2017, I think it went for $130 new. Now they go for $240 new. I wanted to get a second one for two pedalboards but not for over double what they used to cost only 5 years ago.
I’ve got a Pitch fork and at first I was keen on it but after a week or messing about with it and moving it around in my signal chain I’ve grown to love it. Big Muff and then into the Pitchfork into the front of my DSL1 sounds amazing with an octave blended in.
Pitch Fork has a better tone & sag feel, less stiffness. .I am.. very picky/fussy of what brands & style of pedals i use. The worse thing any pedal can have is tone controls, it takes away the true organic sound & feel allowing stiffness and less sag & tone improvements. my pedals boards/rig sounds amazing the distance between the pedals the squashy plugs & cables I use as well as variac set at 109 volts . I also burnout some carbon based 9v Batts for 2-1973 mxr pedals & 1 treble booster bsm. 4 pedals i leave on all the time are hidden/isolated, that's the big trick pedals are like antennas even the plugs , etc. I'm not gonna give away all my tricks I learned to perfect of over 39yrs of playing etc. You have to audition every piece of gear, I mean everything right down to the picks & strings because 95% of the products out there since the 60's to present suck. Good luck to all , I really mean it !!!! a.k.a ''BUZZ''.

You can also mimic an expression pedal with the latch function using only the foot-switch! The Drop sounds a bit better but the Pitchfork has much more functionality...
On clean Digitech sounds better, but it has only downshifting function. For, example I need to tune up from drop H/C#. So, EHX wins in my case because it much more functional. Both pedals also are perfect with bass guitar.
Well, I got one (new), and when I tried to detuning, for my surprise didn't work. I set blend 100%, but I still hear a bit of the original signal, sounding out of tune... What happened?
For just dropping your notes down prefer the Digitech pedal real shame about the volume loss, but the pitch fork seems to do the bass emulating better whilst the drop seems to have some lag crop in on the lower notes anyway that the pitch fork already has anyway. Pitch forks is way more versatile tho... Hmmmm. Fidelity or versatility depends on what u want!
If they would just make a pitchfork that had the sound qualities of the Drop pedal, then it’d be perfect. You can’t octave up or double a higher and lower together on the drop it seems.
The Pitch Fork adds a tiny bit of modulation whereas the Drop leaves the sound more intact especially when it is clean. But I was very disappointed with the volume issue the Digitech has with distortion.
Bruno Alves, it's not that bad. You just have to put distortion after the drop, unlike in this demo. Also, if you use a boost or volume pedal anywhere in the chain, it's easily addresed
Using for Drop Tuning its usually best to have this before distortion or anything else From my experience with my WhammyDT & Pitch Fork. I use the Whammy for my Acoustic Rig & PitchFork for my Electric. I've tried and like both, but for Electric the Digitech wasn't worth the pedalboard space.
Thanks for the comparison, still no idea which one to buy though :-D .Just wanted to hear the last chord of that progession resolve so bad at 05:42 :-D . What was the point of having both on at the same time after that? Is that practical?
Smith, you are an amazing guy and i love your chanel ! Special thanks for the Bewitched song lesson by Candlemass that band is why i bought a guitar to learn . i will see them live here in Stockholm in about 4 months. So the Drop only goes down steps but the pitchfork can also go up steps in case my guitar tuning that i want it to always naturally be is, for example, E-flat or D standard and i want to play a song in E standard? Bu the Drop can NOT do that so my guitar has t always be in E standard?
Ahh awesome.. Thanks mate this confirms I have overall the best pedal (Digitrch Drop) I do play through a Line 6 Amplifi FX100 (so it's a pedal) and use headphones so maybe if I used an amp it would be better
I have had the EHX Pitchfork for a while now, definite staple amongst my signal chain... BUT I’m thinking of spending the extra for the DigiTech and deal with the reduced volume, due to the pitchfork being a little “synthy” to my ears, when going below C Standard. Anyone else have this issue with the Pitchfork??
i been planning a purchase of a Gretsch Baritone for the 'b to b' tuning sound...fell in love with it last year...am poised to purchase. Now tho...i saw this... and i have a question for anyone out there: Is this pedal going to give me that soft deep beautiful sound the baritones give...? The quality of the sound?
Simon Smith what distortion pedal are you using in the video? On my Ac30 the drop needs a very high gain distortion. It feels like when down tuning with the drop it takes gain away.
Here's a good would you rather for all the comments out there.. Would pick a drop tune pedal that dips in volume, but sound more natural or would you rather pick a drop tune petal that doesn't dip in volume, but sounds slightly processed? Either way, no one in a crowded venue would know the difference... So pick your poison!
it works nice for electric guitars and distortion it reduce volume and change tone a bit (remove high's) therefor not recommended for acoustic\piezzo guitars.
I have the EHX,and while its a great pedal it has a very noticeable pre delay effect when the blend knob is dimed.(listen @ 10:18)with super high gain it sounds horrible.I dont hear the pre delay with the drop pedal.
It sounds like theres a very short delay on the drop tunnings(EHX) when compared to the digitech pedal.Like the ambience of being in a bathroom with a very very short decay.
@@notstarboard I've not used the pitchfork itself, but I've had experience with the drop, a whammy V, and an EHX slammy which is based off the pitchfork, and there is a bit off tone and gain loss yeah, but nowhere near as bad as the Morpheus.
I Just got the digitech Drop. where should I put it in my pedal board ? As the First pedal (after the tuner and before whah ) or after whah and before distortions... or after the distortions ?
The EHX has a few more features, but I'd have to say the drop sounds more natural. Both have a few shortcomings imo that the other does better in. Good comparison.

You’re correct.
I’m not a big chorus fan to begin with.... Digi sounds/tunes much cleaner much less wonky.
yes, but Digitech Drop only drops of 7 semitones, then directly to an octave.
Pitch fork goes down or up of 12 semitones either, doesn't it?
The DigiTech is more musical and quiet in signal path. It also responds faster, no noticeable delay when playing.
I'm voting for the Digitech Drop hands down.

The pitch fork seems to have a little worbel to it. It sounds nice. A little something extra for the cleans.
If they would just make a pitchfork that had the sound qualities of the Drop pedal, then it’d be perfect. You can’t octave up or double a higher and lower together on the drop it seems.
I use the pitch fork... just cause it's more versitile. But drop is WAY better sounding
Hello Simon, Is it possible to get a unaffected drop to D without that chorus interfering ? Thx for your video...Yuma,AZ.
Great vid! How does the pitchfork sound if you're only going down/up a half or whole step?
The Pitch Fork adds a tiny bit of modulation whereas the Drop leaves the sound more intact especially when it is clean. But I was very disappointed with the volume issue the Digitech has with distortion.
Bruno Alves, it's not that bad. You just have to put distortion after the drop, unlike in this demo. Also, if you use a boost or volume pedal anywhere in the chain, it's easily addresed
The EH pedal has a m2 selection, meaning I assume a minor 2nd>> tuning E to Eb. The Drop does not have this..did I miss something ?
finally ill be able to play some testament songs without retuning floyd rose which is big pain in the ass.
Simon, thank you for putting this up. What are your thoughts on which one to pick up for a pedalboard???
you guys commenting about the digitech volume drop. if only there was a magic knob that could increase your volume
The Drop sounds better to my ear. Cleaner.
Was looking forward to your opinion.
I kept the Pitchfork. Sounded less digital and no volume drop which was noticeable on the Drop.
Thanks for the comparison, still no idea which one to buy though :-D .Just wanted to hear the last chord of that progession resolve so bad at 05:42 :-D . What was the point of having both on at the same time after that? Is that practical?
Drop is a great pedal, but the Pitch Fork is better for bass.
Tried to use the pitchfork at my local GC for 1/2 step down, it sounded awful. I don't recommend it
Drop Tune wins this like nothing
I have the pitch fork and let me tell you. The drop is superior in ever way...FOR TUNING. I would use the pitch fork more for the pitch effect
Thanks - very helpful!
Have a question can pitch fork bring down my tuning by a whole step?
Both pedals can do that
the only thing tweird is that Digitech lowers the volume and electro Harmonix doesn't, is it due to Connection to the amp?
Ah the question every guitar player asks. Just how would Ed Sheeran sound in drop C flat...?
is a Pitch shift run in effects loop or in the signal chain ? and which one of these pedals is better for dropping the pitch down ?
Are these pedals bad for your guitar speakers when tuned to bass guitar tuning full active down ?
I would think any quality speaker can handle it.
3:40 kind of sounds like stone the crow
The EHX sounds like it has a Kunt hair of delayed signal on it...almost like a hint of ring modulation sound.
does the drop pedal do half step down tuning or only whole steps
i been planning a purchase of a Gretsch Baritone for the 'b to b' tuning sound...fell in love with it last year...am poised to purchase. Now tho...i saw this... and i have a question for anyone out there: Is this pedal going to give me that soft deep beautiful sound the baritones give...? The quality of the sound?
Def Mechu Chronicles
Simon Smith what distortion pedal are you using in the video? On my Ac30 the drop needs a very high gain distortion. It feels like when down tuning with the drop it takes gain away.
I normally put them in the description
i just need a pedal to make my guitar sound a halfstep down what do you recmand
2:36 totally digital sound. That's why the Digitech is better
Here's a good would you rather for all the comments out there.. Would pick a drop tune pedal that dips in volume, but sound more natural or would you rather pick a drop tune petal that doesn't dip in volume, but sounds slightly processed? Either way, no one in a crowded venue would know the difference... So pick your poison!
what is the latency on these pedals, i have a donner and it sucks big time, ok for recording, but is way to slow for live playing.
Barely any at all. Just make sure they're early in your signal chain
My Floyd rose brought me here.
Great Video!! Does anyone know of a continuous pitch knob pedal??? Thanks!
I know this comment is 2 years old, but if there isn't one, you can change the tuning a bit (a quartertone for example) then drop it.
Well, I guess a Whammy pedal is that??
Boss Harmonizer is better than both!
Can they be use on a bass guitar?
Yes
The EHX has this weird envelope filter thing going on. Kinda cool, kinda not. Digitech wins!!!
can they go up in pitch or only down?
Which one has lower latency? Thanks
it works nice for electric guitars and distortion
it reduce volume and change tone a bit (remove high's)
therefor not recommended for acoustic\piezzo guitars.
I have the EHX,and while its a great pedal it has a very noticeable pre delay effect when the blend knob is dimed.(listen @ 10:18)with super high gain it sounds horrible.I dont hear the pre delay with the drop pedal.
Can you explain what you mean by pre-delay?
It sounds like theres a very short delay on the drop tunnings(EHX) when compared to the digitech pedal.Like the ambience of being in a bathroom with a very very short decay.
Pitchfork sounds better distorted and the volume drop on the digitech is a deal breaker for me.
i have both the drop is much better
The Drop seems like the consensus winner here. How does it compare to the Morpheus Droptune pedal?
The Morpheus is hot garbage.
@@paniccleo In what way?
@@notstarboard it sucks a lot of your tone, so the dropped pitch version of your sound likes a flubby and weak mess.
@@paniccleo Idk, it seems to me like it eats some gain but that's about it. Do these pedals not do that?
@@notstarboard I've not used the pitchfork itself, but I've had experience with the drop, a whammy V, and an EHX slammy which is based off the pitchfork, and there is a bit off tone and gain loss yeah, but nowhere near as bad as the Morpheus.
The volume drop turns it into an absolute nope. What a shame. Volume is critical in live scenarios
Not that much actually. The tone matters more live, you can cut through even if your volume is decreased
I use it live all the time and there's no volume drop at all. I don't know why this guy is getting a volume drop in this video. User error perhaps?
Viking Lord i
I Just got the digitech Drop. where should I put it in my pedal board ?
As the First pedal (after the tuner and before whah ) or after whah and before distortions... or after the distortions ?
I'd put it first, but you'll need a good noise gate as it adds a lot of noise to the signal....
P.s. the reason I'd put it first is so that the signal from the guitar is purer and not distorted through other pedals.
Simon Smith thank you.. so after the tuner ?
Reginaldo Oliveira Yes buddy. Spot on.
Simon Smith do u have a mxr micro amp review?
The EHX has a few more features, but I'd have to say the drop sounds more natural. Both have a few shortcomings imo that the other does better in. Good comparison.
Thanks
No offense but your distortion tone is very muffled to begin with, and that being said, you can still hear that the Drop pedal sounds much better!
drop is better for clean sound, it sounds natural
pitch pork is dropping and boosting your distortion..haha
The biggest difference is in the muting
