In this video we will review the Seymour Duncan SA3SC Woody SC Acoustic Guitar Pickup. Here is another link in case you are interested to lear what I eventually got for my classical guitar. guitaringenuity.com/the-axl-ac...
In this Seymour Duncan SA3SC Woody SC Acoustic Guitar Pickup Review I show you how I use this useful guitar accessory on my Takamine acoustic guitar. As you can see from the comments below, people feel different about the Woody Acoustic Guitar Pickup. And they clearly have mixed emotions when it comes to the video I produced. Well, I admit it's a bonehead kind of mistake that I made. The Woody SA3SC obviously only works on guitars with steel strings. Initially, I was looking for an acoustic guitar pickup that I could use on my nylon string guitar, the Yamaha C40. As you can see in the video, it was pretty embarrassing to find out that the Woody Seymour Duncan can't work on classical guitars. But anyway, I thought I shared my faux pas with the RUclips community so others can learn from my mistakes.
What I like about the Woody by Seymour Duncan is the fact that it is so easy to install. You just need to be careful. You definitely want to make sure that the dimensions of the sound hole of your guitar is compatible with what the Woody was designed for. My second mistake was that the Woody didn't even fit on my classical guitar. Not that this would matter, because it wouldn't have worked anyway. But definitely make sure that you measure the soundhole before you buy the SA3SC Woody Acoustic Guitar Pickup.
Another thing that I really appreciate about the Seymour Duncan SC Woody is the long cable. It gives you enough room to walk around on stage. Also, this is another important factor that you should know since many people actually asked me this: The chord of the Woody guitar pickup is not in your way. Meaning, you don't have to worry that it gets in your way as you strum your strings. At least I can't say that I ever had a problem with that.
People have different opinions when it comes to the quality of the Woody SC. I personally think it's a great guitar pickup considering the low price and the fact that it virtually only takes 3 seconds to get it installed. Other guitarists disagree with me on that. They actually think the Woody Seymour Duncan sounds horrible. I guess it is a matter of managing your expectations. Again, as far as I am concerned, the Woody is perfect for my purposes. Of course, there are much more expensive acoustic guitar pickups out there on the market. But I am not performing professionally, so there is really no need for me to look elsewhere.
One more point regarding the installation of the Seymour Duncan SA3SC Woody Pickup: Essentially, all you need to do is wedge it between the top and the bottom of your sound hole. That's really it. Then, all you need to do is plug the jack into your amplifier and you are good to go. The Woody SC produces a warm and clear sound. Very distinct. I personally like the way it sounds and I like its accuracy. Bu then again, this is just me and as I had mentioned before, opinion vary strongly on this topic.
I encourage you to try the SD Woody SC for yourself. It is not a huge investment and if you don't like it, you can always sell it to somebody else. But if you come in with the right expectations, chances are you will like what you get for you money. I personally can only highly recommend the Woody SC.

Ulrich, I would be willing to bet any amount of money that anyone cares to bet that you're not the first person who has purchased a Woody (or similar-type magnetic soundhole pickup) without realizing it won't work on a nylon-stringed guitar. I doubt you'll be the last, either, although hopefully your review here will prevent at least a few others from making the same mistake, which, as you say, was your reason for posting it. I admire you greatly for doing so, and admire you even more for the overall level of gentlemanly restraint you've shown in your replies to those who've felt it necessary to criticize you and your review. Kudos, man!
Rhett, thanks for the comment. Well, what can I say, of course I realized that I look like an idiot before I even recorded the video. I honestly thought that there was some sort of built-in mic in this pickup. When I realized I was wrong, I thought it was 'embarassingly funny' and who knows, maybe some folks would appreciate me sharing my experience here on youtube nonetheless - well, apparently, not everybody did. But that's alright. And like you said, it seems there are in fact viewers who actually find the review valuable and perhaps amusing to some extent. Therefore, I'm totally cool with the situation here. Also and lastly, some of the critics here made valid points (regarding the recording, the amp I used, etc.), I absolutely acknowledge that. Ultimately, though, if you put a video up - irrespectively of its content/quality - on youtube, with the best of intentions, you run the risk of getting slammed by some folks. On the other hand, for each negative feedback I get 10 positives (on average, for all my youtube vids combined). That's a ratio I can comfortably live with..;-). Thanks again!
Ulrich Peise That's a great attitude to have! Peace!
Great job ! Thanks for giving us all a good review of a great product! Real gentlemen! Very few would have shown all that you did! five stars ti you!
This is a magnetic pickup, designed to detect movement of steel strings that will cause changes in the magnetic field. For classical guitar, you need a piezoelectric pickup. Piezoelectric pickups converts vibration (or pressure) into small electrical signals. Piezoelectric pickups are normally installed under the saddle or sometimes are glued to the wood of the guitar.
Many steel string guitars that come with an inbuilt pickup uses a piezoelectric system under the saddle since it will be invisible. Magnetic pickups will need to be installed under the strings at the sound hole which will make it visible. Piezoelectric pickups can detect the guitar body sound effects better since it is detecting the overall vibration of the guitar but it will also detect any knocks and bumps when your hand makes contact with the guitar body. Magnetic pickups tend to detect a cleaner sound since they are detecting the vibration of the strings and the guitar body will only have a slight effect.
+Parrot Brand Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation. As you can imagine, in hindsight I felt embarrassed when I realized that this pickup doesn't work like a mic, but rather as a magnetic pickup. But anyway, I still decided to put the video out there as I thought some folks still might get something out of it. Thanks again.
+Parrot Brand Excellent explanation. I was going to write this same post for anyone confused. No pickup using magnetic poles will pick up nylon strings. To cause a change in the magnetic field you need a ferrous metal.
very good
Thanks for the kind words - I'm glad you found it helpful. I'm sure you'd be satisfied with the purchase. Talk to you later.
I just purchased one of these....can't wait until it comes!!! Awesome review!!
Glad you found the review helpful, Suzanna.
Hi Jonatan, glad you fount the review helpful. To answer you question, I am not really sure, because the only nylon string pickup I tested is the AXL Transducer Pickup (price ~ $15). I am actually very happy with that device. Unfortunately, I cannot put the link to my review into this comment. But if you just search for "Axl Transducer" here on RUclips, my review pops right up there on the top. Message me with any specific questions and I'd be glad to help out. Thanks.
This actually help me decide to buy this pick up! Thanks for the video.
Glad you found it helpful, Richard!
Hi, just wanted to say thanks for the review, I found it very helpful. I am considering purchasing one of these pick ups. Glad to know it will fit both of my guitars and it sounds really great.
Hi Mr. Sina, I actually got myself the AXL Transducer Pickup for my classical guitar and I am very pleased with it. It was less than $14, which is insane. I added a link to my review of the AXL into the description. Thanks.
Ulrich, thank you for a very honest and informative review. My late wife bought me a very inexpensive guitar over a decade ago, and now that I've decided to relearn playing the guitar, my very special project is to restore her gift to a playable state again. I had thought of installing an integrated pickup on it, but - sentimental value aside - I couldn't justify putting a $200 pickup on a $100 guitar. When I found the Woody, I wondered how it would be installed on the guitar, and luckily found your review. New tuning pegs, nut, saddle, and pins have worked wonders on this guitar - can't wait to hear it with a bit of reverb! Thanks again!
Thank you for the awesome review!! this is what i was looking for!
Thanks, I have several Martins (D28, D41 and D45) and just bought a Seymour Duncan Woody HC Hum-Canceling Pickup to share between them.
Diego, thanks for the feedback. Actually, I did receord the whole audio seperately via a condenser microphone - and during the editing process I deleted the audio part of the camera and added the audio track recroded with the microphone to the video. So I'm a little bit suprised that you hear a "camera sound" - maybe I need to do a better job with the position of my condenser microphone. I'm still learning...again, thanks a lot for the input!
Nice review man. I seriously considering buying one of these. Thanks for the video.
hansley270, I'm glad you found the review helpful. Thanks for the comment!
Hi Dorian, thanks for the comment and thanks for seeing thins with a little bit of humor, including my mistakes ;-).
Thank you so much for your great review! Best review I've seen.
jackdragbean Glad you liked it. Thanks for the comment.
jackdragbean i
Cool video. Thanks for the info and review!
Hello
> Can i plug the Seymour Duncan directly into the mixer Dynacord (analog or digital etc) and that the guitar sound comes out to the speakers connected to the mixer?
> Or do l need some accessories? (Guitar amps, Preamps)
Oh, I see. Yes, you are aboslutely right. I wanted to look into this whole "in-line" recording thing anyway. Very good point, Diego. I will keep this in mind for future reviews. Thanks!
Hi Marlan, glad this was of help. It's a quality product at a low price that works remarkable well.
Thanks for a great review.Ive been lookibg to buy a acoustic guitar pick up.thanks again.
Thanks for the review. May just get it.
I am searching for an acoustic pickup ,this was a very good video of this pickup and very helpful, Thanks
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks!
3:07 why do you give me these western spy inches? how much is it in santimeters?
Hi guys. I got this pick up and I want to conect it to mixer. The things is that I'm using a mic that needs +48v phantom power and at the same time to plug the guitar in useing the woody mic. Is it possible to use it without damage it?
Hello, thanks for the great review.
Is there any model in the range price for nylon string guitars?
thanks
That's awesome. I'm glad you like it. Have fun!
Well, I never thought of it that way, but you're right! The only problem is that the amp and gear is in my office whereas my taping and recording stuff is in another room (on a different level). That's just impractical and I have to figure something out. Anyway, thanks for the comment!
Great question - because you would think it does, right? However, I never had any issue with that to be honest with you. The only thing that can get anoying is the fact that the cable gets in the way when I want to rest my strumming hand on the body. But that's when you can use some tape to fix it snug so it doesn't wiggle around.
Hi, Ulrich! Thank you for the detailed comments. It was very interesting and informative. Could you help me? My question is about possible problems with the soundhole. The diameter of the soundhole in my guitar (Fender CD-60/BLK) is exactly 10 centimeters (3.94 inches). How about this diameter for normal working of SEYMOUR DUNCAN SA-3 WOODY SC?
hello I'm from Venezuela, I have a guitar takamine F340, but it is not electroacoustic, would work well?
Im new to this but will this also work for a 12 string guitar plz help
Thank you for the comment. I will keep that in mind for future product reviews.
So glad I checked your channel I was about to buy one for my nylon acoustic. What would you recommend for it?
It says it right on the description nomatter where you get em
which pickup would you recommend for a nylon string guitar?
Glad it was helpful, Francisco.
Well, I obviously wasn't able to make it work on my classical guitar. However, there might be a way to modify the device so it does actually work on these models, I don't know.
I have a jasmine guitar and was wanting to get a electric accustic but my guitar teacher recommended I go this rout with a pick up I have a question will I have to buy a accustic electric amp or can I use my electric guitar amp for my electric guitar and my accustic I really don't have the money right now for a brand new guitar electrc accustic
My pleasure - glad it was helpful!
Hi I have a Martin 00015M guitar and I really would like to have an elecro-acoustic on it. But I don't have a big budget and this kind of system it's affordable for me. But my point is that I will play on stage outside so I wonder if I buy this system... the sound will be good enough? If you think it won't be good, maybe I will just put a microphone in front of my guitare.... I don't know I'm really confuse about it.
(sorry for my english I'm french, I hope you'll understand! :) )
Hey man! so, which mic did u buy for your yamaha? I need one for my c40 too!
Joey, while I haven't personally tried it on a 12-string, I am fairly confident that it would work. As long as you make sure that the dimensions of the soundhole are withing the right range, you should be good.
the takamine pickup is worst than SD ? what is yout takamine pickuo? im thinking about to buy one of those
Truly useful, thanks.
And little bit charming and lovely the honest words with all the funny mistakes of the choice.
Thanks Ulrich, really enjoyed your honesty and enthusiasm. Have a high end Taylor acoustic and the expression systems are not all they are cracked up to be. So I have been shopping for an additional supplement to the sound. The Woody was an option, but I think, after hearing you mention the small space you were playing in, it might be a feedback issue at live gigs with big sound. Shadow has a new wireless system, called Panaflex. Very pricey, but something I am considering. They are German made, any chance you've encountered them?
Peace Jover, thanks for the comment. Keep in mind, I was using the Woody via a Marshall amp, not an acoustic guitar amp. My review was therefore not optimal. But either way, you mentioned you're playing a high end Taylor. Therefore, i would think you're better of with a more 'top of the line' product. Unfortunately, I haven't heard of Panaflex. But hey, they are made in Germany...can't go wrong with technological stuff 'made in Germany', right? ;-)
does the Woody SC would fit in Yamaha FX170?
My sound hole is 4 inches/10 cm. Will this fit?
ahaja007, thanks for your comment. It was stupid on my part, but on the other hand, I can still put the Woody to good use on my old Framus Western Guitar.
Thanks for the upload as you saved me from making the same mistake. Very helpful video.
Lol, thanks...that makes me feel better!
verry nice sound and verry nice playing, btw whats the name of the song you played ?
Hey just a quick question. Will this pickup work with 12-string acoustic guitars?
Thanks for that review. It sounds great
mad4stripes Thanks a lot.
I think you will really like that little thing. It's a high quality product at a very affordable price. Glad you liked the review.
what is the model of the takamine??
Hey man, if I want to replace my under saddle pic up with this SA3SC, would I be able connect it with my existing preamp? I have a Takamine GN30C. the reason I am doing this is to adjust the string height with a new saddle and want to use this or any soundhole pick up with the existing pre amp.
I am sure you can if you have the basic skills to cut the cable and and solder it to the preamp. might pay to do some research encase.
cheers
Eleven years ago, wow!
Did you try glueing it together?
does the cable ever mute the thin e string
thanks a lot for the info, I have the same issue, for the Classical guitar check "compact style Acoustic Classical Guitar Pickup sound hole" in the ebay, but I am not sure about its quality.
Hi my friend, as long as you have steel strings on your instrument, you're good. And, of course, make sure that the Woody fits the soundhole of that specific model (from what I can see, it should be no problem).
Hello sir, I really appreciate your sc review video. I want to know whether the woody would fit in Yamaha f310 or not.
Secondly, i want to tell that I am from India, a place with people having no musical sense and guitars, and I belong to a poor family. I have collected money in one year to buy an acoustic and a pickup. I want that pickup which has a perfect bassy and clear acoustic sound. Is the woody perfect thing for me?
Thanks
RSVP
Hi sentimentize, thank you for the feedback. To be honest with you, I only know the SC version and therefore I really don't know how it compares to the HC...sorry.
What you thnik abuot use this pickup to acoustic 12 string guitar? How it will sound?
+Mateusz Żerek You might look at some Fishman humbuckers. This is OK for temporary in an inexpensive guitar. My self I could not do a gig sound wise with it.
Can this device be used when plugged into an Audio Interface? I'm looking for a pickup that would allow me to record clean audio from my acoustic.
edwardfeast Yes you can
Andy, yes, it will fit perfectly.
is there a way to have pickup like that but instead of the wire hanging off the front it connects to the endpin jack?
yes you would need to get an endpin jack in your guitar. then cut the cable on the woody to the right length then solder it on to the endpin.
You could put the cord in the guitar and attach the end to a female female 1/4" connector and have that in the end pin, or you could check out Emg or a similar manufacturer and see what they have to offer. Sadly the woody only comes with the wire that goes out the front.
Great, Great, Great review. You just sold me on it. Fantastic.
Glad you found the review helpful, Rob! Thanks.
Thanks for reviewing this. I have quite an aggressive playing style live, do you think I'm at risk of dislodging the pickup by snagging the lead or anything?
Dan Sheridan Well, it's all relative. I found the pickup is quite firmly and securely wedged into its position. Could it come off if you through your guitar around all over the place? I guess, but by just strumming and hitting the strings (even aggressively) I doubt that you'll have an issue.
umm, what a great review, can you please tell me the name of little pieces you're playing there from 7:53, thanks a lot
Hi there, thank you for the comment. As far as my random fiddling is concerned: the first one is an adaption to "Message in a Bottle", followed by the 'bonfire versions' of Purple Haze and Hey Joe.
thank you for response!
Hi, yes, somebody explained that to me after I shot the video. In hindsight, very logical but I honestly didn't know back then, Anyway, thanks for the comment!
You got it, Max.
What song are you playing at 8:08? Sounds absolutely beautiful and you’re playing is great✊🏼
Message in a bottle, police
It's a magnetic pickup... Why would it work with nylon strings?
what song you playing on 7.58
Sounds like the chords of "Message in a Bottle" by The Police
;;
WRXjasonSTI first of all thank for reply
but no i m quite sure that some other song i heard this song before but i cant remember name of song
Have you amplified the Yamaha? How? I'm in that plan too.
David, I'm using a cheapo AXL transducer pickup as demoed in this video here: ruclips.net/video/3kiSYiUCe1M/видео.html
Hi will it work with nylon strings and classic guitar? Haha
what you need, is the lr baggs Lyric, for under the soundboard. of your classical guitar
How durable is it?
Magnets dude, plastic's not magnetic!!!! :-D
I know - enlightenment, right..;-)
Thank you for making this video.
Will this also work for a 12 string guitar
Hi there, I don't have a 12 string but I would assume it would work jsut as well. As long as the dimesions of the soundhole are in the range of what the Woody is compatible to, you should be fine.
Had to laugh, your 'random stuff' is pretty much what I play when I'm twiddling about. Got to love some Hendrix.
It's a magnetic pickup. There's no way you can modify it to work with nylon strings.
I have an two ideas. Compare the tone of the guitar without the pickup first.
Second idea...do not plug an acoustic guitar into a Marshall stack for a demo.
+jimmy5634 Jimmy, both are fair points and in hindsight I wish I had been more careful/mindful when I put this review together.
And I am afraid there is too much bleed of the acoustic part ofyour guitar into your vocal microphone
For classical guitar, there is one type of inexpensive pickup that you can just fit in the soundhole. It is a small curved piece that follows the contour of the soundhole and it basically detects the vibration of the wood around the soundhole. You could probably buy on eBay or Amazon. Just search for classical guitar soundhole pickup. I have one and the quality is pretty decent. There is another even cheaper version made by this company called Cherub. It is a clip-on pickup. You can even clip on the guitar headstock to avoid having the wire interfere with your playing. These ones are just OK. Does not sound very great but it is very cheap and quick way to "electrify" your classical guitar (or steel string). What works for classical will work for steel strings but not vice versa!
Cherub pickup
honestly I've been playing guitar for more than 15 years, and until reading the comments below, maybe it came to my mind that this wouldnt work on an acoustic nylon guitar, havent had it on mind, but maybe this could help me to not doing that mistake
greatly helps!!
Hi there, I honestly don't know. I am sure there ways for folks who are more 'crafty' than me and they can find ways to 'hide' the wire. Personally, the wire doesn't really bother me, but I can see how others might fee different about that.
According to the user's manual (www.seymourduncan.com/images/products/acoustic/502050-120.pdf) this pickup can be adapted to STEEL strings guitars with sound holes smaller than 3.8” by following these simple steps :
1) Pull out the foam in the slots on both sides of the pickup
2) Cut each piece of foam in half along its length
3) Reinstall the foam pieces in the slots. Tack them back in place with a drop of glue on the edge of the foam
I did that and it still didn't in my guitar.
Andy, I just sent you a message via youtube with a link to a picture I just took (Woody next to a measuring tape). You'll see the Woody will fit perfectly.
3:05 I heard it 9.65" to 4", I think it should be 3.75" to 4". Is that correct sir!!??
Amit, wow, you're absolutely right! 3.85" inches is correct - I have no idea why I said 9.75". I will correct this and add a clarifying annotation to the video. Thanks again.
Ulrich Peise 3.85 inches is ca. 9.75 centimeters :)
Thanks Martin..;-)
In essence sound hole pickups are by design pretty much the same thing as the pickups in an electric meaning both have magnets. Magnets only work on metal therefore no sound when you try it with nylon strings
Hi ! If I've watched this video, it was cause I knew that magnetic pick-ups don't work with nylon strings guitars. Only with steel strings guitars. Now that I've heard you saying that, I completly agree with all the rest you've said. Well done ! CIAO BYE !
Mustafactor: I bought the AXL PG 800. I will send you the link to my video review of the AXL and then you can decide for yourself.
thank you sir!
The thing is, if you´re going to review a pickup, we need to know how it sounds, right? So the best way to do it, is recording your guitar IN LINE. That means no microphones. Because microphones will record your guitar sound + the amplified pickup. So we will hear 2 sounds, instead only 1 (the pick up). Got it? But thanks for reviewing this stuff, it´s really really great!!! Cheers!
There is no way to modify woody for a classical guitar because it uses magnets and classical guitar needs piezo pickups. That's also the reason it didn't fit, it was made for larger holes that acoustic guitars have.
p.s. Piezo works on acoustic guitars too.
When reviewing acoustic instruments you got to cut off audio from camera, and record it in line with some software .. otherwise you mix de camera sound with the amplified sound. but thanks for reviewing
nice,i liked
