"teenage girls are being encouraged to have their breasts cut off" I had top surgery two weeks ago. I fought for that top surgery for ELEVEN YEARS, and I showed very early signs of being transgender. And after it all, despite how hard I worked for this, I legitimately feel guilty that I got it while some other trans people can't; I feel unworthy because I got this life-saving procedure when others might not ever be able to. I can go outside now without experiencing existential dread, and I feel like I don't deserve it because of how many other trans people also fight hard but can't get it; because of how many other trans people aren't lucky enough to be able to afford it no matter how hard they fight.
But yeah no totally we're "encouraged."

My brother in law was kicked to the curb for being trans when he was 16. 32 now. Still waiting on top surgery. His wife (my sister) is planning the biggest fucking party on earth for him when it finally happened. All bets are off for when all boobs are off. If it was as simple as walking into a hospital one day and walking out the next down two bulges the next he and I would both be saved a lot of pain.

As a trans person who had not get top surgery yet, I feel happy everytime I see someone who got there. I feel some euphoria when I watch videos of trans people showing the results of their surgery. I hope I can get mine before my 30's, but until I do it, I find hope in other trans people.

Along with the same people suggesting that a parent with the best intent in mind requesting an intake at a gender clinic for their child just booked them a one-way ticket to hell that will have a hospital forcefully make sure a child will fully see through with treatment even if at one point in all the interviews, questionnaires that have been filled out the child is showing signs of doubt or active desisting the feelings of gender dysphoria.
You know, those people who like to make use of the argument: "I'm so glad my daughter is not growing up now. When she was young she was a very boyish girl, liked boys clothes more and was overall just much more of a tomboy than she was girly. She told me at age 14 she was into girls. Imagine the irreversible damage I could've caused by sending her off to a gender clinic because I would've fallen victim to the trans craze! She is now a happy mother of 2!"
As if a gender clinic has no safeguards in place anymore to prevent people from entering their medical treatment programs because they probably should not be in there....
I try to spin that idea around sometimes to people by stating that if they were to use that kind of reasoning for any other specialism in a hospital that you might be able to get a referral for (let's say your child needs to see an orthopedic doctor after having taken a hard fall to one of it's knees and the pain of it won't go away and the general practitioner wants it to be examined by someone with more experience in joints/posture in general), that it would be wild that if I were to use the orthopedic doctor as an example, you'd be scared of your child having it's leg amputated.
"I'm so glad I waited because the pain eventually subsided on it's on! Can you imagine what could've happened if I called the doctor!" Unfortunately that never seems to help, the same people will then say "That's totally different"....

Jamie, is it possible for you to go on shows like this? It would be wonderful to see you up there with your cited sources, your PhD, and just a lot of hard facts explaining what the reality is. I think what happens is we often see the far ends of the spectrum (both ends): either transphobes screaming, "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!" or (rightfully) angry trans folks screaming, "I AM THIS WAY SO LISTEN TO ME!" You have a straightforward, calming way of saying, "No, this isn't happening and here's why. Also, this is the reality and here is why...here is the science and the receipts." It's not based on just your own experiences... you've lived it but you've also really studied it.
In other news, congrats on your LGBT award last month. I am only slightly jealous that you were handed the award by my future wife, Sue Perkins 🤣I was watching the livestream for her and screamed when you won!!

    • @UpbeatRhythm

I'll be honest. As much as I love Jamie I don't know that he'd excel in a debate format. Not for lack of facts or being articulate. The lady who went to the LGB Alliance conference? I can't remember her name.
The problem with news shows like this one though isn't that there aren't any trans people or professionals in gender issues available. They just aren't being invited on. The goal is to platform anti-trans viewpoints and have it go unquestioned.

A friend of mine actually stumbled upon Transgender Trend's official website a month or two ago and showed it to me. He was quite confused by their intentions and asked me to read their official description. Neither of us knew they were a transphobic organization, and at first when I read through it, there were some points I actually started to agree with, such as the fact that you can be a girl and like masculine things and vice-versa without "automatically being transgender". But the further I read, the more disgusted I became, because their site's not as immediately transphobic as this interview revealed it to be, at least not to my friend. It was of course words like "castration" and "cutting off [sex-characteristics)" that really tipped me off to what their stance really is.
I'm trans, and a firm believer and advocate for trans rights and healthcare, but there're transphobic people and organizations who can draw anyone, especially unaware cis people, in with carefully crafted arguments, not just the obvious bigots we like to make fun of. No matter how progressive and supportive you are of the lgbt+ community, be safe, smart, and make sure to challenge these dangerous people.

"you can be a girl and like masculine things and vice-versa"
This is a common example used by those who don't understand gender issues. They think that "identifying as female" means "liking the color pink", so they come to the conclusion that a trans woman is just "a man who likes girly things", and that trans activists are forcing little boys to take puberty blockers as soon as they decide to play with dolls instead of trucks.
Of course, gender is far more complex than that. Some men, both cis and trans, can like things associated with femininity, and women likewise can have masculine interests. And what is and isn't associated with femininity/masculinity can vary greatly depending on culture (the commonly cited example is that the gender connotations of pink and blue used to be reversed).

Well, when I was a kid the same kind of people in my life were constantly pressuring me to act more "lady like" whenever my behavior/attitude/looks didn't match their idea of how I should present ...I felt nauseated whenever they'd use terms like that to describe me. I lived 35ish years trying to make the term "tomboy" feel like it fit me...to grow out of not feeling ok with who everyone said I was. Why did gendered language feel so gross when applied to me to the point of almost gagging on it when I had to use it to describe myself? Why wasn't the issue "fixed" by just trying to accept who I surely must be for so many years!? Well, it turns out I'm nonbinary. I'm almost 40 years old and just had top surgery after years in therapy finally understanding myself..and there are many older than me who finally have the words to describe ourselves. I think gender roles and gender identity are two separate things and to pretend that they're the same is harmful to trans, NB and other groups. Transphobes often use examples like myself to try and disprove stories like yours, when they are completely different. You can be a tomboy happy to be a girl, or you can be a child who was identified as female at birth but feels like a boy, which is a completely different thing even if two 8 yo children, one a tomboy and one trans, might act and look very similar. It's what they feel that counts.

I call this kind of stuff from transphobes/misogynists "The Transmasc Gender Cycle of Shit", and it goes like this:
      1) Upon coming out as non-binary and bisexual, the insistence from other people that "Women can be masculine! Women can be gay and butch! You should just try to be a tomboyish woman!"
      2) Upon using terms like "woman" for yourself due to the peer-pressure in point 1, the praise; "Oh, you're such a modern woman for breaking gender stereotypes! So feminist! You're redefining what it means to be a woman!"
      3) More praise, this time for every time you happen to be feminine; "That skirt looks lovely on you! You should wear mascara every day!" Eventually, the praise stops; "Real women are feminine and soft! Women can't do sports, that's unladylike! You should make your voice higher! You should wear dresses and make-up more! You need to change, or else you won't be able to find a man!"
      4) Upon giving up trying to be a woman (as defined by other people) and identifying/re-identifying as non-binary, the cycle starts over again: "But women can be masculine! Why can't you be a masculine woman?"
Of course women (including trans women!) can be masculine while still comfortably being women - part of the problem is that the world is INCREDIBLY hostile to all gender-nonconforming people, including both non-binary people AND masculine women. The same people who insist you "should" be as masculine cis women are usually the same people who harass masculine cis women for being masculine.

Darcey Mussey, when I read people using arguments like that, accompanied by the verbal sigh of relief that parents with daughters are "happy their daughters are not growing up now, because with their behavior and all of the things happening now, I probably would've sent them off to a gender clinic and to think of the damage I could've caused is just incomprehensible!"
It's good that you shared the opposite of that experience, no matter how awful it was, especially because if parents were to overreact, or at least by seriously misjudging a behavioral trait that might not have anything to do with their child being transgender, it's typically suggested how the intake at a gender clinic should be considered a one-way ticket to hell...

How about recognizing that the suppression didn't work, the torture didn't work, and the religion didn't work and it only scarred a population. And instead of wanting our children to be struggling with their mind, body, and spirit, we decided to acknowledge that differences do exist, nothing is wrong (meaning it is not wrong to identify in a diverse way including gender, sexuality, ethnicity, race, and culture), with differences, and work on ourselves so we can further growth in safety and peace in the future. I see very similar, painfully regurgitated, comments on news sites in my country about "my body my choice, but ohh we can force kids to take hormones and go to surgery".
Hormone treatment for trans people here I don't think even exists, let alone surgery, you literally have to travel abroad. I guarantee if a trans person comes to a doctor for an appointment to seek hormones, the doctor wil either be very confused or just think they're a lunatic, like "we don't do that here darling". That's how non-existent treatment is. The very best they can get is a competent psychiatrist that's had at least one other trans patient, and that's already wishful thinking

@@disgrace1309 Really the concept of gender within linguists is a wild little rabbit hole within a rabbit hole to jump down. My main area of interest within linguistics is constructed languages, and it's amazing how they're evolving with the bettering of our understanding of gender and sexuality. Esperanto for instance, which is the most widely spoken constructed language on earth and one in which I personally happen to be fluent, originally had only three third person singular pronouns: the masculine "li," the feminine "ŝi" (pronounced exactly like the feminine third person singular pronoun in English,) and the inanimate "ĝi" (equivalent to "it.") However since the 1970s and especially since the rise of the internet the third person genderqueer pronoun "ri" has been gaining popularity among young Esperantists, especially among people who are raised speaking Esperanto as one of their native languages. It differs slightly in usage from the singular "they" in English however: typically if you're referring to a single person of unknown gender identity you would still use "ili," only using "ri" to refer to people who are known to be nonbinary. The remarkable thing is that this has been completely grassroots from Esperanto users on up: the language's regulatory body, La Akademio de Esperanto, suggests the use of "ŝli" instead of "ri," but nobody actually goes along with it and most Esperanto dictionaries printed go with the latter instead of the former. Esperanto is often held as the ultimate case study of a constructed language transitioning into a living language, and this is just one example of many that can over pointed to of it growing and not staying strictly within the rules laid out in its foundational documents.

In my language for example "government" is a female word, while "little girl" is of neuter gender. Obviously, this is not related to sex or "gender identity".

I feel like it says a lot that here in a 3rd world country (South Africa) it's easier to transition than it is in a first world country like the UK. Obviously our public healthcare sector is also heavily underfunded but even the private sector is relatively affordable for starting your transition. I personally didn't have to go through any kind of psychological analysis to prove that I'm trans enough, the doctor just spent time having a discussion with me and I was diagnosed with gender dysphoria. There's obviously a disclaimer that you sign saying that you willing accept the risks of undergoing the process but other than that pretty much anyone can access it if they can afford it, even if you have a mental disability. The mindset behind our trans healthcare is simply; why would people want to transition if they're not trans (the doctors will explain all the risks involved and if you go to the right person they will do their best to find what is best for you) and, regardless of your mental state, you know what your gender is.

    • @naraseth
      @naraseth 2 года назад

THIS! "why would people want to transition if they're not trans" Ok, I think that only people who are in a mental state that actually allows them to make life altering decisions should be allowed to get any kind of surgery that is not an emergency (so if you're on drugs, drunk or something similar, you can't make that decision), but besides that I totally agree.
My country want's to make it easier for people to change their first name and legal gender, so in the future it will be enough to just fill a simple request. Ofc critics said it is too easy and that people will abuse the system, "what if someone isn't really trans?", but the politics just said the same "why would people want to socially and legally transition if they're not trans?". It's not that trans people had more rights than others.

    • @ThatDollLoopie
      @ThatDollLoopie 2 года назад +3

@@naraseth just to clarify no body's out here rocking up to a doctors appointment demanding surgery 🤨. Typically you are encouraged to do fertility Preservation (or at least sign that you recognise the risks and choose not to do Preservation), then you go for a full round of blood tests and start on the absolute minimum amount of hormones, you do blood tests once a month and slowly up the dose till everything stabilises. Before all that you would need to be diagnosed with gender dysphoria, in order to be diagnosed you need to have experienced multiple symptoms for at least 6 months (though this does not mean you have to wait 6 months to get the process started). And all of this is out of pocket, medical aid doesn't really cover any transition related healthcare and their isn't really any government programmes that assist (unless you live in a city that does provide assistance, but there's a crazy long wait list that you may never get onto and that only covers hormones). Pretty much all surgeries are done in the private sector and aren't generally covered by medical aid (bottom surgery for trans women typically costs about 20 000£), and even in the private sector there's a long waitlist for surgery.
The gyst being: as long as you can afford it and you're a consenting adult you can do whatever you want with your body. You don't need to go through a year long psychological analysis to transition and our government recognises that people with mental disabilities are able to know what their gender is. I have autism and probably would have been told that I'm not mentally stable enough to transition in a place like the UK or US but I can confidently say being over a year now on hormones that I have never been more happy and confident in myself than I am now

Just wanted to leave a positive note here -
My sister, who's not anti-LGBT+ just a little narrow-minded due to lack of exposure, recently brought up the topic of trans women in women's toilets and changing rooms. Thanks to the great arguments Jamie provides us with in his videos, I was able to open her eyes a little bit by telling her that trans rights aren't there to take away women's rights, that there actually is no precedent for every transphobe's worst fear of a predator entering a women's bath room with malicious intent by claiming to be a trans woman, that put of all women trans women, in fact, are at the greatest risk to experience discrimination and violence, that there isn't a pandemic of trans-ness but that trans people have always existed throughout the history of humanity - they were just invisible.
It really got her thinking and I'm sure, she's changed her perspective on things.
And it showed me how much it helps to approach uninformed, reluctantly tolerant people with understanding and the will to explain instead of inferring they're dumb and backwards for not knowing better.
I'm so glad there are people like Jamie who are willing to share their struggles with the world so we can learn about where other people are coming from and become more open in the process.
I just wish there was more quality stuff done in languages other than English, which my sister, for example, has no patience to sit through.

I had to put an end to it because neither of them would take information from any credible sources (which unfortunately I couldn’t cite because RUclips doesn’t like off-website links in comments), and at that point it’s just not a debate anymore. You put some of what that argument entailed into great words here, thank you!
Also, you’re so close to 1 Mil!!! That’s amazing!!
Edit: remember everyone, you don’t have to engage with transphobes. I know it feels like we need to constantly be defending ourselves and our identities, but you don’t. At some point it just becomes bad for your mental health to keep dealing with them, since they’ll say things that range from just terribly misinformed to actively hateful. Especially with the kind of transphobes you’ll find in these comment sections, you likely won’t get through to them anyway since they aren’t here to really learn anything and are just here to cause drama. It’s okay to step away, it’s okay to take a break, and you know what? It’s okay to just ignore them completely. Remember this: your identity is valid, being trans is okay, and anyone who says otherwise can go kick rocks and eat sand.

You WERE trans at the time, you just didn't *KNOW* you were transgender. Someone who is transgender was always transgender, they just didn't know that they were transgender- or weren't out at the time. Regardless of whether it was because they didn't know what gender they actually were; they didn't realize that they were allowed to be themself; or they were in an environment where they _weren't_ allowed to be themself, including being the gender they actually are.
Using language like, "I wasn't trans at the time," or "they weren't (identifying gender) then" makes transphobic people feel like they are justified in framing being transgender as a cult, fad, or something that people are 'converted into.' It implies that being transgender is an 'acquired' or 'obtained' state of existence, and thus 'unnatural' (never mind that it has some shitty implications about parts and states of life that _can_ be acquired, like being disabled... but these same people often consider anyone who isn't exactly like them to be worse than them, anyway...)
So using phrasing like, "before I knew I was trans," and "before I came out as being a trans man," is better in regards to preventing transphobic people from weaponizing your own words against you (ex. "If you weren't trans, then you should know what _made_ you trans.").
It is also better because it is both objectively more correct _AND_ self-affirming. You were *always* transgender, meaning you were *always* a man or boy(or woman, or enby, depending on individual and their identity obviously), and *always* will be a man. You always have been, are, and will be a man, even if you feel like you don't 'pass' as one now, or feel like there's some other reason you don't feel like you're 'enough' of a man to be one.
You have always been yourself, even before you found the missing piece of who you are.
Language is important, even more so in regards to subjects like this. One of the best things you can do in regards to feeling comfortable as yourself is to use language that affirms your identity and your right to be yourself.
(I am assuming that you are a trans man, but the general idea remains the same.)
The only way to be a man, is the way that *YOU* choose to define what it means to be a man. Masculinity doesn't mean the same thing between different cultures, or between different generations. It doesn't have to mean the same thing even between two different people.
Your sperm donor's- as anyone who does anything other than support, raise, and love their child as long as they aren't hurting others, doesn't qualify as a *real* parent- definition of masculinity is doubtlessly one that is defined by negative traits such as lack of empathy, denial of emotions, and refusal to have affection towards others.
You do not have to define masculinity by the same regressive traits and limitations as he has restricted himself within, in order to be a man.
If you identify as a man?
*You ARE A MAN. That means that anything you do is manly, regardless of the opinion of others.*

I’m 11 and unfortunately where I lived it was illegal to use puberty blockers for gender reasons, although luckily I need blockers for a different reason related to my height so it matched up and I got the blockers!

I started socially transitioning at 17, started seeking medical transition as soon as my 18th birthday, and just before my 25th birthday this year, I was FINALLY able to get top surgery. I couldn't even start hormones until 21 because of a combination of factors.

Thanks so much for including representation in all your videos and making sure that the voices of transgender 🏳️‍⚧️ people are heard! Your are an inspiration for me and many queer teens on this platform. Finding people like you brave enough to share your identities with a wide media audience has helped me come to terms with my own, and for that I am deeply grateful.

Thank you so much for this video! I cannot believe how well-timed this is; I'm collecting sources for a research paper I'm writing in hopes of convincing my parents that I am not, in fact, trying to hurt them nor betray the family by transitioning. This is extremely helpful. Cheers

Imagine if they took all the energy they use on a problem that doesn’t exist and used it to ensure that trans kids can have healthy, safe and comfortable and possibly even happy childhoods like many cis kids get to have. I wish I had that growing up instead of feeling suicidal at the age of 7, but that’s exactly why I care so much about trans kids and their well-being. I didn’t get to be myself until I was 18 despite coming out with all the right words at 13, saying I was a boy when I was 5, clearly expressing bad gender dysphoria from the time I could walk and talk etc. Trans kids deserve to live as good a life as possible, as should any other kid. Kids shouldn’t have to feel suicidal because they can’t be themselves freely, and they shouldn’t have to feel unsafe

healthcare in the uk is such a disgrace rn and people are acting like you can just pop up to the gp and have surgery and hormones done within the week. idk how long the waiting list is, but i have to wait three years before my autism assessment (i will have both started and finished my first degree in that time) and im sure the trans healthcare waiting list isn't that much better.

“The theory of gender identity is very harmful for children”
I think it’s quite the opposite. If I had been educated on gender it would have saved me a LOT of pain. Transphobes don’t even know what their talking about.
