  • We had talked about visiting Verneukpan in our last trip to the area, but we had to take a detour and we didn't have time to fit it in. This time, we made sure to make it happen. The drive to Verneukpan was quite a trek. It took us a while to get there and we had to open and close 19 farm gates along the way. It was very time-consuming and my knees took a beating, but we knew it would be worth it in the end. Once we finally arrived at the pan, it was truly surreal. The landscape was unlike anything I've ever seen before, just this vast, flat expanse as far as the eye can see. It was really something else. Driving on the pan itself was really special. I couldn't believe that we were driving on the same surface that so many people have attempted to break the world land speed record on. It was a really unique feeling. Overall it was an unforgettable experience. I'm so glad we made the effort to visit Verneukpan this time around. Bucket list item checked! #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #verneukpan

    Hi you two! This was really something! Thanks for taking me along. The only thing I knew of Verneukpan was its history of world record land speed attempts there.
    Your drone views on the way was a good illustration that nothingness can be very captivating, as long as blue skies are there.
    It must be hard to farm there and even harder for the Swartkop sheep like the one on the roadside, hiding in the shade.
    It was a very interesting trip in a less seen part of our beautiful country and I enjoyed it as always!
    I'm looking forward to the next trip.
    Keep safe!

      I have to agree, it was really something! I loved the aerial shots of the pan and found especially those lines very intriguing. We later learnt that those were the remants of attempts made by farmers to grow vegetation there, but I would imagine there is just too little water. We looked at all those sheep I had to open and close the gates for and one has to admire their toughness to survive in such a harsh environment. 😍🐑 So happy you also found this trip interesting, we sure did! 🚙🤩

    Yayyy!! Verneukpan at last. And so worth waiting for. Good to see the gravel roads are still well maintained. We were impressed with the good condition of those roads. I am talking 1987 here. Yes I see that dust! YOu should have seen our car after the visit to Verneukpan!! Well do I remember those million gates! Hubby was driving so it was "die uwe" who had to jump out and open and close those gates. Lucky I was still a jongbokkie back then.O Hek! Nog n hek!!! Swartkop is smaller than I remember, not that it was very big back then. Ai! Die mense kry darem swaar!!!😪You cn see how the road gets more like dry clay. We came via Brandvlei and the manager at Brandvlei Hotel warned us, as it was a cloudy day with rain threatening. "Passop! As net tien punte reen val, kom jy nooit weer daaruit nie!" Apparently if some rain falls, the clay becomes very sticky and you could get stuck. Isnt that shimmering mirage in a distance so like water! But you never come to that water!! Very spooky. The whole place has such amazing vibes, you never forget it. So interesting to see the drone view. Looks like a lunar landscape! We went on for quite a bit, and eventually, its not a road any more, just wheel tracks in the desolation. Of course that may be different now, but back then, thats what it was. Well there you go. Driving to the camp site gives you the picture, dissolving into nothingness! Thank you for an awesome visit.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  Год назад +2

      Yay indeed! 🚙🤩 Wowzer, you were there a long time go already! This place is a must-visit at least once in a lifetime. The roads are still in fairly good condition, the last few kilometres of the approach road did get a little sandy, but otherwise all good. Those gates didn't only give my knees a hiding, but timewise it added a good hour or more to our travelling time. Had I known about the alternative route, I most certainly would've skipped all those gates, it honestly felt like a milllion! 😨 I can only imagine how that hard-baked clay can quickly become a sludge which one escapes from with difficulty. I don't even want to think about that happening and luckily it didn't! That mirage is something else and had my darling wife chasing after the water in the distance bigtime! 😁 Needless to say, we never found it! I did get the distinct feeling of it just continuing endlessly exactly as you describe it, and at that point I still thought I had to open and close a million gates again, so we sadly had to make an exit. It was most certainly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for us! We're glad we could take you back there, 30-odd years later!

@DustBugsTravel  Год назад +1

      It is a part of our country with an intense beauty, but a very harsh beauty. Magnetic is a good word, because we seem to head back to the Northern Cape every so often! 🚙🤩 The roads were perfectly fine for the most part, just a little sandy as we approached the pan. Corrugated roads are an inextricable part of our travels, so they were ever-present, but that goes without saying. As long as the ditches or water puddles aren't too deep and we're not too close to the edge of some kind of cliff, Sonia is very brave nowadays! 😎 You absolutely have to make a plan to head out there when next at the southern tip of the African continent. 😍🇿🇦

    Hi guys amazing video truly in the middle of nowhere a total different slant on the diversity of land in South Africa the dust devil brought back memories. I'm glad you managed to make a tick on your bucket list. From the dry river bed to the mud huts looked like something from STAR Wars. Loved the cafe with the old petrol pump swartkop tiny place but you know you are in South Africa church and a sports field. The drone footage again just how isolated you were interesting information about blue bird sir malcom Campbell this 25:51 video was a complete surprise thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one

I was happy for the breeze to allow me to fly the drone for a bit, I was keen to see the area from above. Anyway, glad to be on the road again with the both of you 😍. Heerlijk vooruitzicht, dit weekend 2 vervolg episodes!

    I speak under correction but the way understand it is that the Sak River, which hasits origin in the mountains of the escarpment in the south ( Beaufort West, Fraserberg, amongst others), flows towards the interior, similar to what one finds in Botswana. It only receives a fraction of a fraction of the inflow compared with Okavango swamp.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  Год назад

      That sounds about right. I read online today that 'the Sak originates in the Nuweveldberge, is joined by the Vis River, and flows into the vast panlands of Brandvlei. Beyond Brandvlei to the north, the Sak flows into Grootvloer Pan .... that links the Sak River to the Orange River in the north.' I believe the Nuweveldberge is in the Central Karoo in the region of Beaufort West, so your information is spot on, I think. 👌🏻🌊⛰️ And, since your comment is under Verneukpan, I thought I'd add that 'by contrast Verneukpan, a system immediately east of Grootvloer, is an internal drainage basin.' Rather interesting info all of this.
