Red wine glasses are usually pretty big. Smaller whine glasses are usually for white wine, because red wine needs to take in oxygen to properly develop the flavour. That is btw also why you don't fill your glass with an entire bottle of wine.

Yeah my parents are pretty serious about procuring and serving high end wine at their dinner parties and I don't think any of their glassware is that big
Yeah that would be called a Bordeaux glass and it’s made for serving high end wine. When coming up from the bottom of the bowl. The point where it stops getting wider is the 6oz mark. One of the reasons the glass is so big is so that when you swirl it, there is plenty of air to open up MORE of the wine than in a standard wine glass where the air can only open up part of the wine. Sangria is also traditionally served in a Bordeaux glass because if it was served in a normal wine glass, you’d have abt 2 oz of 15% (max) alcohol which isn’t going to do much to anyone. Edit: I work in a seasonal wine bar and fresh grill
Wow so you're telling me the extra large glass designed to hold a whole bottle of wine actually holds a whole bottle of wine? Thank you for this illuminating video.
@@elgoain8 it's fairly common here, the 100 ml is barely over the bottom curve; usually that's for red wines, white wines glass are smaller. Why? Most red are supposed to be spinned a lil in the glass for make em breathe (that's why the red wine glass it's way bigger than "general" wine glasses)
Most of the wine glasses I’ve purchased for the restaurants I’ve been the beverage director for are 16oz that we use as APGs and then I’ll purchase 22oz-24oz Bordeaux and Burgundy style glasses for the the higher-end wines and cocktails/sangria-style drinks. 750mL is 25.36oz, so it’s definitely conceivable to have a “regular” glass hold a bottle of wine.
How, exactly, do you fit 25.36 oz into a 24 oz glass? Also, the large wine glasses you are talking about are specialty wine glasses meant for a specific application. A "regular" wine glass is not that size.
A pint is 16 oz, most places use a 20 oz glass. This would be over 24 oz, it's actually over 25 ml. I couldn't do the math in my head because I couldn't remember if an oz was 28.4 ml or 29.5 ml.
I worked at a restaurant where the Burgundy and Bordeaux glasses were both this big. Every once and a while i had to do this demo to prove to a customer they didn't get shorted on a 6 ounce pour.
This is not a traditional wine glass. Called a "bucket", I think the intended purpose is for high quality wine, to get the max surface area for swilling, it just also happens to fit a whole bottle of wine if you fill it to the brim
That’s way bigger than a normal wine glass. Just to put things in perspective for those who don’t use metric, 750 ml (size of a wine bottle) is almost 26 oz - more than three cups. A typical coffee mug is about 12 oz, so imagine a wine glass double that size is what it would take to hd a whole bottle
Nothing comical about it. This is a very standard red wine glass. It’s not supposed to be filled all the way like in this video, but it’s very common for drinking red wine.
