The longer you are homeless the more emotionally and mentally ill you become. It gets to a point where it then becomes hard to get out. I was homeless in San Francisco and San Diego and way up in Arcata North California. Thank God I had two skills of being a street drummer and I made handcrafted Jewellery. When I was living in San Diego I used to catch the train over to Tijuana and buy semi-precious stones there. They were very cheap. I finally dealt with some of those mental issues that I was dealing with and got back into my profession as a mental health case manager believe it or not. Now I'm retired living on a pension doing volunteer work in a kindergarten class 4 days a week for 5 hours. Back in my hometown in Detroit Michigan. It was quite a journey for 10 years moving around the country

I have a question for you, if people had someone to give them a base to stay, shower, etc, would homeless people get jobs and live better. I am a real estate investor who specializes in bad areas. After I moved out of the house with my ex I was technically homeless. I had a large amount of money and rental homes but I didn’t have a place to stay. I slept in nice hotels but I got a glimpse into homelessness. Showering so important.

I moved to Arcata in 2002 and lived in my Honda, I loved it until I could not find a job and ran out if money. The last time there it has changed, the thrill is gone for me atleast. I like a bed and food, I'll work hard now.

I was homeless for nine months. I made my self invisible.my co workers had no clue. I walked to work everyday. And walked every night until I found a.safe and unassuming place to sleep. I packed trash and kept my spots clean. One difference is i did not use drugs. And i knew it was temporary.

There’s something you said “I didn’t use drugs and I knew it was temporary.” People who are homeless only touched drugs after as self medication but what you said about knowing it was temporary is extremely important. Most after a few months would’ve started to get down on themselves. Fighting to stay positive while homeless is an extremely tough thing so I congratulate you on that mental and emotional fight.

Most of the homeless are so mentally ill that there is no saving them. They just roll around on the filthy sidewalks all day and night. Also the people barely clean up after their dogs so that adds to the problem. It is the most disgusting place I have ever seen to be honest.

We also have to regularly do self-evaluation according to the biblical principles to make sure that we are not hypocrites ourselves pointing the finger at others calling them hypocrites!!!!

Let the Word judge them, not us.

@@washredskin887 I respect that perspective, and as you probably know downtown became unaffordable as it came to have more tall higher-cost apartment buildings, displacing lower-income residents. Also, the housing supply throughout our state hasn't kept up with demand for decades. A large proportion of people were living here when one day they couldn't make the rent, either because of an unexpected expense or low wages or because the landlord raised rents because of that very problem. It's a complicated problem. People have to understand that changing zoning laws to allow more housing to be built fast enough to keep up with demand will help reduce the growth in people experiencing homelessness. Yes, a lot of people come here to take advantage of programs and some are here from other states, but there are shelter programs in even the red states. However, downtown was once a very affordable place, then they put all the buildings. I'm not like an anti-gentrification activist. The problem is both displacement caused by gentrification, and the lack of supply and government costs driving the developers to raise rents. Homelessness has to do with housing in addition to a lot of other issues, but a lot of republicans don't talk about the housing element of the issue. I believe in having everyone who accepts it has a shelter bed, which is what they're doing now. Also job training, mental health, and drug counselors. Housing is mainly what many people need, but it should be done on a case-by-case basis.
California is an expensive state because of many things, mainly its strong economy due to the jobs here, but it doesn't mean that housing should just be a commodity where it goes to the highest bidder, displacing previous residents. It's not like everyone should have the right to live here, but housing can be decommodified such that the developer doesn't need to make a profit in addition to breaking even, Singapore's or Austria's model. CA AB 387 of 2021 just studies those types of models. Housing is a complicated issue. And I know there's compassion fatigue, but not all of these people made bad choices, it's just that housing here is very expensive.

@cHriS I have 2 friends that have pulled themselves out of addiction and all the accompanying problems, going from losing their apartment to surfing couches, and when kicked out of the places of the few people that would allow that, living in their car. Because they were doing drugs and drinking prodigiously while couch surfing, they were never allowed to stay with me, nor would they have if they were living in a refrigerator box. I’m not going to endanger myself because they squandered their lives on drugs and alcohol. They ended up getting arrested and cleaned up eventually. They became more productive, moved into their own place again, one relapsed and passed of an OD. His partner is now left without him but he has remained clean. Having overcome a serious problem with weed myself, I know that only when you make the decision will it happen. It’s naive to think that being nice is going to solve their problems. I don’t claim to even begin to know what to do about this exponentially growing issue, but I know that it’s them that have to take the first step. No one can take that step for them, not me, you or anyone.

When I was little, my idea to fix homeless was to teach them wildlife survival skills and for all the homeless to band together and move off the grid and live as a tribe. It probably wouldn't work but me and my friends tried to put it into practice once. We managed to buld a small shelter made of sticks, branches, and stone in one of the neighborhood parks. It was nice until the city tore it down but it was a cool experiment into what people did when there was no assistance and you had to live off what nature offered.

I was homeless in Hollywood for one day in February, 1990.
I sneaked into Griffith Park, at the gate, at the end of Canyon
Park Drive. I slept for a few hours, holding onto my Irish Wolf-
hound Rory for warmth. During the night, I woke up, to see two
green eyes staring at me in the dark. It was a curious coyote
checking us out. Rory didn't chase it off, as he usually did.
It really was a special moment. Later that day, I was picked
up by a Cadillac limousine and was fortunate enough to be
housed in a mansion in Whittier for three months, until
I got on my feet again. I was the lucky exception. It was
a harrowing experience I will never forget. This email

I’m just wondering what has attracted so many native Californians to leave and move to the south.

Lee Cooper...14 years ago, I owned 19 acres in southern California with the intention of breeding Arabian horses. Then I got online and saw the Ouachita National Forest. I wanted green pastures (plentiful rain), huge deciduous and evergreen trees, peace and quiet, four distinct but fairly moderate seasons, dark night skies for stargazing, a friendly community, courteous people, respectful youth and low property taxes so made the leap. Also, I was sick and tired of hearing Spanish spoken everywhere in California and some illegal immigrants absolutely ruined my neighborhood with their weekly, LOUD, all night partying. FYI, I am agnostic and very liberal in just about every way but the good conservative people here put up with me.

@@nancyayers6355 I am a nurse and dental hygienist. I do local volunteer work and international humanitarian aid work. I have done a considerable amount of volunteer work with the homeless providing dental-medical aid. This includes skid row in LA. I praise GOD everyday that I have food, shelter, and water. I have compassion, sympathy, and love for every person I help. Context is everything. Each person has a story. Some are victims of violence. Not every homeless person is an addict or drunk. You never know when you could end up homeless or without. The restroom issue is tricky. In skid row when they installed street restrooms the gangsters started to charge the homeless for access. It made things worse. When you actually work with the homeless you learn that this issue is very complicated and solutions are difficult to implement. You should watch the "invisible people" videos regarding homelessness. Also, I have worked with homeless families with babies and children. They need prayers, money, healthy food, shelter, water, jobs, compassion, and a hand up. This issue will not be solved with hate or malicious attacks against homeless individuals. When you actually work with the homeless community you really learn how we as a society have failed them.

One day 8 needed help finishing about 170 board on a big job so I asked him to help me out. He's been with me for 4 yrs now one of my best finishers. We got him in an apartment in a month I helped with a boarding house room at 120 a week at first until then. He worked hard and his only vice is bud light which he isn't that bad. He really just needed a chance and someone to believe in him he thanks me all the time and always tries to help others. The other had a totally different mentality he just wanted money for doing nothing, instead of an Holy rate he wanted to get paid by the job. As if he were driving his self and not using my tools entirely, he made excuses would disappear but I still tried to help. I gave up after 2 weeks or so he was content with his existence and didn't want more I noticed alot of them are just trying to get free money and free stuff.

When I lived on the streets, 90% of the homeless I knew where unable to keep housing and services, because of substance use and character issues.
But even knowing that, I would still rather see my taxes spent on suffering Americans instead of immigrants.
I often wonder if Americans are really aware of how many billions are spent, either on, or because of, immigrants.
There is almost 100.000 illegal immigrants in our prison system . Just keeping them alive costs way more than a wall to keep more of them out!

DareToLive just keeping them alive “ have u lost your humanity 😒🤷🏻‍♀️ ... u saying let’s help people on substance who are already ruining society overall who made their own choice by the way to take drugs over people who come to work ? Ah yeah u don’t make sense most of this people don’t want off the streets seems u didn’t know much 🤷🏻‍♀️ a lot of interviews of ur fellow Americans calling a shelter jail. While being offered it also why not lower house prices and raise minimum wage that seems to really help people that need it.

I have TOTAL contempt for these people. These people have made their choices in life. The people on this report all look able body and you can flip burgers for 15 bucks an hour. I believe in the sink or swim approach to life and these people don't even want to try. How can you help someone who isn't willing to help themselves? Every person in that report looked able bodied to work.

Not when the burger place discriminates because you are homeless. I was homeless for about five years in San Diego from my late teens to early twenties, nobody would give me work when I tried to find work, Groups that claimed to help the homeless never helped, even though I finished school with a high school diploma, never done drugs, smoke, or drank I'd get looked at like trash. While some police were ok many would terrorize me and others. I eventually managed to get some help to get on my feet and off the streets but yeah, five years. Most Places saying they use money to help are liars.

    To all the trolls,
I have dedicated most of my time for 6 years assisting the homeless, feeding them, getting them toys for Christmas, etc. but it’s necessary to clean the area. Their was an HPV outbreak and it needs to be clean.
My heart goes out to these homeless but there is help, churches, and local businesses trying to incorporate the homeless into there work model to lift them out of property such as The homeless garden project
