    1: if your dog can get their jaw stuck in it, the toy is TOO BIG
    2: it's not supposed to be the thing you feed your dog with, it's a "puzzle" toy for small treats and have them work on getting it out
    Know your dogs breed characteristics and buy toys and products accordingly.

    Hi Rachel, while you are on the subject of Kongs. We gave our over exuberant Lab a Kong that had the canvas type fabric covering it with "tails" hanging from the bottom. Very common to see at any local pet store. He was playing with our Golden Ret and having a tug of war. He won the war and pulled off one of the "tails" in the process. His thinking is, "I'll swallow it so SHE can't have it, IT'S Mine!" I found out a few days later that he had this in his intestinal/stomach which caused violent vomiting and no pooping. It was stuck in there! $5,000.00 surgery later, they removed the Kong "tail" and he recovered well. From that point on, I hardly buy toys anymore because most of them sold at pet stores are seriously dangerous to SOME breeds. It's to the owners discretion and own judgement to purchase toys for our pets. This was my experience and I thought I'd share it since Rachel was on the subject of Kongs. Good health to all!! Thanks for letting me share my experience.

    I hear you say you would not use most all things unsupervised. All the treats, treat dispensers, slow feeders. Is there anything you would put in the crate when leaving them for the day for entertainment as well as a way to make going in the crate/leaving a positive thing.

    • @Irish_Lass2024
      @Irish_Lass2024 5 месяцев назад

      She says you should try to give the dog a break after 4 hours in a crate. Not everyone can do this. Not everyone has family close or a job that allows for that. It's not realistic for many people. I've listened to real dog experts and there are some toys, usually one is best, that you can leave in a crate, even with a puppy. I don't know Rachel's background but she's not a vet nor a trained animal behaviorist or trainer that I'm aware of. I listen to the professional experts. As far as I can see is Rachel is sharing a lot of her own opinions based on what she thinks or experiences, but this doesn't always make it true for everyone else.

    Good tips. I think it is a bit unrealistic to expect people to be home all day, every day with their dogs. That would mean that almost no families could have a dog. I know working from home is increasingly popular; but it is still not available to the vast majority. It would be good to have more tips for working families; as well as those of us not wealthy enough to buy so many expensive toys and what to feed/treat in an affordable way. Thanks for all you do. I learn a lot

      I agree! My 3 yr old I've had since he was a puppy is fine and has free roam of the house. However, puppy isn't quite there yet, she still has to stay in the crate when we're not home. We do marrow bones and recently I've started filling the empty ones with banana or pumpkin (looking for expanding recipes) and freezing. Then I give one to her when I put her in the crate. It helps a lot. Usually she's sleeping when I get home.

      Puppy is 9 months, she's fine as long as I come straight home after work. If I have long stops on the way home/events to attend, then she needs someone to let her out and either my brother does it when he's off or if both our schedules are long that day we get a friend to let them out. However, she has figured out that she can go in the bathtub! Lol. There's been a couple of times since being housebroken that she escaped her crate and used the bathtub. Think about it, if there's ever a hurricane/tornado/bad storm that it's dangerous for them to go outside then the bathtub is a great place for them to go

  • @colinassadinia
    @colinassadinia 4 года назад +6

    Generally speaking, brachycephalic dogs most likely will not run into the issue of getting their jaw stuck in the Kong. Because you have poodles, this definitely applies though. So breed is going to be very important when selecting the right size. Because Kong’s are such a valuable tool to use for dogs, owners shouldn’t be afraid to use these.

    I think you're sizing them too large or that would never happen

    • @Irish_Lass2024
      @Irish_Lass2024 5 месяцев назад

      Yeah, I found her info rather confusing. First she started off making it sound like the Kong is the worst thing and we should just toss it. Then she says it's great and sizes up for her dog, and then says her dog can get its jaw stuck in it and says, therefore, it is dangerous. Ummm, I'm thinking get the safest size for your dog and then you won't have to worry so much. A Golden Retriever I had 40 years ago had Kongs and there was never any incidents, and he was a chewer. Not liking how she presents things.

    Hi I’m getting a puppy in a week and I was wondering if it would have a negative affect on training my pup if I let her sleep in my bed at night all of my family dogs have slept in the bed but i was just looking for a second opinion :)

    • @zariacaprio1491
      @zariacaprio1491 4 года назад +1

      If you are planning to crate train, it will make that a lot more difficult, because the more fun and comfy place to sleep is with you, not in the crate. personally I wait until 6 months to a year so I can establish a relationship and obedience (if I tell the dog to get off the bed it will) But otherwise it is really a personal preference.

    Why not just drill a couple little holes in the side? Does it compromise the structure too much? I’m thinking how they have on menstrual cups lol but they’re just little holes that help break the suction. Like 1/16 inch ? When I was reading things before watching this, that’s what I thought people meant by having extra holes on the toy.

    Per instruction from Kong Part of sizing for a kong is not small enough to swallow, but not big enough to allow the jaw to fit into the kong. In the case of this video she said she would go with the size bigger just because that’s the way she rolls meaning to be more safe. What she doesn’t realize is there is a safety slot. By going bigger she actually made it unsafe because he can fit his jaw in the kong. Think of it like fishing with a slot limit not too small and not too big.

    my dog has played with these all his life and never had a problem. I leave him with four of them full of food when I go out. Even my small one I dont know how a dog could swallow it. IT seems if they are big they can get their jaw in there and the small ones can be swallowed! catch 22. the non brand ones are garbage. Kong makes the best products.

It's when dogs from the same litter grow up together and aren't able to be trained because they listen/cling to eachother instead of their owner. Yeah it will cost you in excess of $6000.00 to get one that’s too small removed from your dogs stomach. You’ll be spending several months mortgage plus and arm and a leg to save them. Better yet to find a less dangerous toy. Keep the rubber toys out of your house. The problem with this whole dialogue is when you have a small dog and a large dog and the Kong for the little dog ends up in the big dogs stomach. It only takes a minute for them to get it and swallow it plus I had it sitting on the table and the big dog got it off of the table. I thought my dog was poisoned at first.

  • @steveh2023

    Kongs can be a tripping hazard to humans. They are rubbery and don't slide out of your way. Significant concern for older adults.

      it is probably safer if you don't let it thaw all the way or let it sit out too long but if you put it in the fridge instead of the freezer it would probably be ok (please look for other answers too as I have no personal experience with dog food)
