- Thanks to John Shore for sharing his historic 8mm home movies of his two cruises to Vietnam aboard USS Oriskany flying A-4 Skyhawks with VA-163. During 1965 and '66, John captured infight clips of formation with fellow pilots, carrier landings and takeoffs and other interesting at sea scenes.
I was a yellow shirt on the bow, fly one, I spotted the port catapult 66 and 67 cruises. John McCain was on board in 67. A lot of good memories .
Memories of a sad time. I was the VA-163 Air Intelligence Officer on the 65 Vietnam cruise. We were a close knit group of men and we took each loss very hard. Our squadron were some of the bravest men I ever knew. They knew each mission over North Vietnam could mean they might not return, but they went anyway. Thank you John Shore for the videos.
This is amazing, especially when considering it was taken over 50 yrs ago with a hand held camera. Thank you John Shore. Saw the comment below and a warm spot for the Bowling family. My Dad was Harry Jenkins, flying with John at the 10:00 mark in the video. God bless all you Saints families.
Hi Kirk, I remember your father very well. He was the best skipper the Saints ever had. My family was very honored when he gave the eulogy at my father's funeral at Arlington. My mother and I attended his funeral years later in San Diego. Hope you are doing well. Marilee says to say hello. She had a huge crush on you lol. Warm regards,Joe Bowling
Awesome!... we operated A-4 Skyhawks with our RNZAF.. we also operated Seasprite helicopters with our RNZN .. thanks from NZ 👍🇳🇿
Amazing! I'm sitting at home remembering my father on this Memorial Day, when I come across your video on VA 163. My dad was Hap Bowling. My oldest daughter just ask me to text her the photo of him with the rest of the squadron on board the Mighty O. and I found Johnny Shore's pic with the rest of the aviators. Thank you! Truly a great gift on this day.
I wanted to give you some information you may already have. There are two books that mention your father. Wynn Fosters "Captain Hook" and Peter Fey's " Bloody Sixteen".
@@saintsdaughter3843 Thank you very much!
@@saintsdaughter3843 Excellent books! Over the Beach is very good too.
Wow this footage is great my dad and uncle were both on the ship and before my dad died he told me slot about it I'm sure he never thought one day I'd be able to actually watch film from then he would have loved this he passed in 2004 so he never got the chance thank u very much
We had many family friends on the 66 and 67 WestPac, all with 163
I served during these two cruises with VF 162 on board the Oriskany. We flew the F8s with the stars on the UHT. Since I worked on the flight deck, not too sure how much of the footage captures the intensity of a launch or a recovery. Nerve racking for the pilots I am sure but no picnic for those of us on the deck. By the way, we had a Stamos in the squadron, maybe this is your dad. He called himself the Greek.
Thanks to John Shore for sharing.
I was with VF-162 for the 66 cruise. It sure is great to see a lot of our F8’s in this video, I was in ever one of their cockpits installing parachutes and seat pans on a regular basis. I was a PR 2. I’m sure John Shores knows one of our pilots who made himself famous for being the first American to be shut down by a Sam and survive it, his name is Rick Adams and our CO Dick Bellinger was the first Navy pilot to shoot down a mig 21, after he had just been shot down by Mig 17 a couple months earlier
En su época fue majestuoso. 👍🛩️🛩️👍🛩️
I was born and raised in Oriskany, NY, site of the Revolutionary War battle that the ship was named for.
Thanks for the footage, this is great!
At 5:29 is that Skyraider really taking off without the catapult? Pretty impressive!
Happened all the time back in those days. COD's and E-1's also did deck runs, but the E-1 i have only seen do it on the big decks.
The Skyhawks jocks know this: Ed Heinemann at Douglas was ferocious on getting rid of every pound off the A-4, that included no folding wings, saving 200 lbs, the only carrier based plane without. He also delivered it at about $100,000 below the Navy’s target price of about $2 million per plane. What Defense Contractor does that today ? The designer of the Mitsubishi Zero was in the same way. Intelligence reports famously said we couldn’t build planes that way, flush rivets, screws, etc. built like a Swiss Watch, every unnecessary ounce of weight off. But no armor and self sealing tanks and it flamed easily. But with an engine the was 20% less HP than Wildcat, the Zero was faster in level flight and something like 40% longer in range. Compared to these 5 Gen planes; 5G are massive, heavy, requiring very powerful engines. The FA-18 carrier strike groups are noted for short radius, requiring a lot of refueling for longer endurance and deeper strikes .
Classic flight sim lovers can play Yankee Station missions (based on real historic missions) on Jane's Fighters Anthology with my usnraptor Playset installed in the game. It can be found at myplace.frontier.com/~usnraptor/ . Players can fly the A-1, A-4, A-5, A-6, A-7, F-4, and F-8 in the Yankee Station campaigns. Fighters Anthology itself allows players to fly over 100 different aircraft.
