  • It's now been six years since the Borders Railway was officially opened by Her Majesty The Queen on September 9th 2015.
Last year we spoke with Councillor David Parker, the Convenor of Scottish Borders Council, who predicted that we may not see an extension of the Waverley Line from Tweedbank to Carlisle until 2040 if people didn't start stepping up to the plate. That comment ruffled a lot of feathers but one year on, have people been stepping up to the plate?
We met up with David Parker one year on to see if he was still talking about 2040 or had things moved on with the project?

People always argued that reopening the Waverley Route would put the Borders Area back on the railway map, but, unless they open the line south to Carlisle, anyone wanting to get to the rest of Britain to the south will have to travel north to Edinburgh and then south from there. It makes no sense. It didn't take this long for them to build the entire line back in the 19th century, without the machinery that we have available nowadays.

They should start at Carlisle then work back to Hawick. Then finish the Gala to Hawick the other way!

It's looking like it's not going to happen.

In other words David - too much talking and not enough action. I notice you forgot to mention how little SBC are doing to move the programme forward so perhaps you could encourage your colleagues to get active a bit more. STOP Talking - GET Moving. Thank you.
