  • This is a collection of clips I shot over the years with the AMT 1:1400 USS Enterprise-E model I built and lit up.
    I mainly used a motorized slider and a green screen to put these together.
    I used various music from the movies to try and go along with each individual shot. Credits to the great Jerry Goldsmith.

      What a lot of people dont appreciate is that ONE of the reasons why practical stuff can look better is that the camera movements are real too. There is a horrible tendency (from directors I think mainly) to make camera's do impossible things in digital shots and even if the audience doesn't know exactly why, it just instantly makes the shot feel fake.

    There's something to be said about a physical model and the way it instinctively gives a sense of weight and reality to it versus CGI. You've really captured the essence of what is missing with all of the CGI rendered starships out there nowadays. Excellent work!

    Then I realized; there's nothing wrong with the backgrounds, they are top-notch.

    Niiice :D
    im gonna nit pick but only a little as i want to give some advice.
    You used a motorised slider, is it controlled? Can you program it to accurately repeat moves? If so!
    Multipass!
    Take several shots of your model in different lighting conditions, studio fill, key light, model internal light with everything else off... (all with green screen turned off) then finally a matt pass with nothing but the green screen lit.
    You can then use those shots and composite them together and have full control of the look of the models lighting.
    Some of it is a bit off in these all in one shots. You can literally slide the light up or down in your compositor of choice...
    I also noticed a little matt issues but its nothing you cant fix :D
    Genuinely really nice to see ppl do some model shot effects again... Im also doing something soon! (So I've had a lot to think about)

    • @nmphoto37
      @nmphoto37  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for the advice. As a matter of fact, the 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th clips in this vid were shot using the multipass technique. That's actually one of the main reasons I finally went with the motorized slider. Everything aligns and composites properly when its in the straight singular dimensional movement. I'm actually going to post a "making of" video sometime soon demonstrating how I've been doing that.
      Where it gets dicey unfortunately is when I introduce rotation, like in the 3rd and 4th clips. The slider is a cheap Newer brand one, so the rotation is very jerky and inconsistent with every pass. So I haven't been able to get a usable aligned result with the multipass technique, hence how you are able to tell the lighting doesn't look as great and the internal lights don't pop nearly as much in those other shots. Maybe one day I'll invest in a high quality slider, but until then I will keep working at multipassing the more "complex" shots the best I can :D
      And yes, the matte issues are definitely apparent in some of these lol. They're still all a WIP. I just get lazy after I spend hours on a basically a "test shot" and don't feel like doing all over again the proper way XD
      Definitely sounds like you know what you're doing when it comes to model effects! Good luck on your future projects!

    this is wonderful. just wondering, are you shooting a matte pass along with your beauty pass? or are you leaving the green/blue screen lit during the beauty pass? you also may want to try dialing down the resolution of the background plates, as they seem sharper than the ship and so its making the comps a little off

    • @nmphoto37
      @nmphoto37  5 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks! Yes these were shot with a separate matte pass. These particular shots in this video were made 2-3 years ago when I was still figuring all this out, so yeah I agree some of the backgrounds stand out more than they should.
      If you're curious, I posted another video on my channel with an example of my passes and how i composite them.

    Although, I have to say that there's something about this particular model that doesn't seem right... The deflector seems oddly placed, it's coloring is weird, and there are a lot of protrusions sticking out all over the hull. Anybody agree?

    Never looked better. I always thought it looked fake as in the show. Never seen it looking real.
    I noticed there appears to be a fair bit of grain over the ship in the first shot. Can't tell whether you added that for the filmic effect, or if its the result of a lighting issue. Did you add grain to these shots? If so it's only so noticeable in the first shot because the background has no grain.
    Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Production shot on 35 mm, visual effects elements shot on 70 mm. Why? To equalise the grain when the images are combined with an optical printer. Go and watch Close Encounters and tell me if you can see the seam - you can't, it's flawless and they probably should have won Best Visual Effects over Star Wars for how convincing the effects were. The point is though that I can see the seam between the foreground and background of that first shot, because the grain isn't equalised.

    • @nmphoto37
      @nmphoto37  7 месяцев назад +1

      Yes these all have grain added to them for the film effect, to varying degrees.
      Although that first shot was actually taken 2 years ago with a Panasonic GH5, which has a micro 4/3rds sensor, so yeah I think there was already some moderate grain in the original shots. Plus I didn't have as many lights to work with as I do now.
      Also absolutely loved the special effects in Close Encounters!!

  • @MiiFone1
    @MiiFone1 7 месяцев назад

    Looks ok but not as real as some CGI. You can tell its a plastic model and can see the defects pretty clearly. However the ship movements are awesome as I prefer star trek ships to move slow and turn as if they have great mass. Giant ships that fly around like a fighter looks silly IMHO. Much better than I can do so hats off.

    • @nmphoto37
      @nmphoto37  7 месяцев назад +1

      Oh I agree, there's a lot of room for improvement. I actually don't have the patience for proper modelling, so the defects are obvious lol. And most of these shots were just me messing around/experimental. I plan to eventually re-shoot most of these now that I know certain movements are possible with just a 1 dimensional slider. Stay tuned!

    • @LoraAtkins-m9j
      @LoraAtkins-m9j 7 месяцев назад

      I disagree, it is more logical that in space the ship can turn everyway in a split second. I mean, it can go to warp without hindering of Inertia. ANd there is no up and down, so the ship should be able to just flip and turn very quickly. That being said.... the feel when seeing this moving slowly, because of our reference, gives you the impression of a ship with great mass. Same als the explosions and sounds. Not logical in space, but looks cooler.

    • @MiiFone1
      @MiiFone1 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@LoraAtkins-m9jships can be fast in a straight line no problem. Physics of warp drive make this feasible. But a six million ton vessel does not flip around like a acrobat due to inertia through so many vectors so quickly. Giant ships move slowly through arcs. Looks better and makes sense.
