- Finally got around to showing what my current motion controlled setup is for the filming of these models!
Thank you to everyone has shown me support and compliments. It really means a lot and inspires me to keep making more of these!
I apologize for the audio quality, I didn't realize until after I recorded this that the microphone volume was up way too high.
Sigh....
Also excuse my messy office/makeshift studio.

Just incredible that you’re able make these videos and prove that practical is still king for FX
Thank you!!
@@nmphoto37 definitely try and get ahold of a Nikon 60mm f2.8 Micro lens, it’s one of my favourite lenses and will let you do extreme close ups. It has really shallow depth of field in extreme close up, might give you some interesting scale effects.
@PointOfLightProds That lens has actually been on my wishlist for a while. I own the 105mm f2.8 micro and absolutely love it, but it doesn't have the versatility that a wider lens would have.
Dude this work is so awesome. I wouldn't be surprised if people start hitting you up for model shots
That would be cool!
This is so amazing, it gives me chills. Thank you for your work with these models it brings such incredible feelings of nostalgia and happiness
Amazing work. I do stop motion. People like us need to keep the old ways alive 🙌
Wow, thanks for showing your setup 👍, it looks expensive and complicated.
It has definitely become more complicated as time has gone on!
This is some awesome stuff. Keep it coming.
This is sooo cool! I got a Syrp Genie setup that I want to use but I need to finish building some star trek models first. This is good info. Thanks for sharing!
Motion control rules. Awesome that you figured out how to make it move faster. Would be great for some quick ship flybys. They'll have that nice natural motion blur.
Agreed!
I love how the motion controller sounds like R2D2
Your work is really well done! Keep it up!
Thank you!!
Great work!!!
You could flash the light by making two passes, one with the lights on solid and one off. Sounds goofy, but I’m pretty sure they did this on ST:III when the “space doors” were about to open. The entire image changed contrast each time the lights on the doors changed states.
Crazy awesome!
Fantastic!!
This is cool! Im really interested how the composite happens in software...
You do amazing work. Your motion control, cinematography, and lighting are all spot-on, but the models do look like models. This is not a criticism - you've succeeded at cinema to the point of the subject being the thing that deserves to be improved. It might be an idea to get a Patreon going to get high-end models commissioned or something.
Or offer your services to high-end model makers! :D
And by the way, your models are far better than anything I have ever built. I have an unpainted Defiant, a butchered Enterprise-D (I tried to make a Nebula Class), and a partially-modified Enterprise-E kit that I like to pretend I'm still working on.
(Third edit to say: I hope I'm not coming across insulting! I mean to praise!)
Edited again to say: Sorry - I'm... not sober. What I mean to say is that your models are fucking AWESOME, but they don't hold their scale in every shot, you know? They're not cinema models, I guess is what I'm saying...
Thank you very much!! No offense taken at all. You have given me some good things to think about!
I also tried to make a nebula class with an old Ent-D model kit many years ago too, had no idea what I was doing and horribly butchered it too XD
This is really awesome. I always look forward to your new posts. Particularly with the Enterprise-E.
Is that a Emotimo Tb3 36Jx30k5 H38-1684A?
Also, what model of slider is this?
Thanks!
P.S. beautiful work! I'm working on miniature spaceship shots of a science fiction film. This looks like the set-up I need.
Not sure if it's that exact model number, but it's definitely a TB3. And im using a Neewer 39" slider hardwired directly to the TB3
Very impressive. But you could include the final shot in your video, so we can see the result of all your work.
Can you elevate one side of the slider to get vertical motion?
I can, and I have for some shots. It's great for more subtle types of up/down movement, mainly to keep the ship looking "straight" as it flys away for instance.
How about using a microscope lens for flying through the Enterprise E?
I think my only main issue with this is that it probably wouldn't be able to keep the entire ship in focus, which is what makes it look bigger than it is.
Could that be fixed in the post? Or shoot with anamorphic microscope lense?
I'm not sure, I'll have to look into this
