As a newbie ham operator I have made it a habit of checking in with a local daily net.
Just good practice to stand by, listen for check in request, announce call sign, wait for invite to utilize frequency, call clear, and pass back to net control. Im sure this is nothing for old ham operators, but at two weeks in from receiving my call sign, using my radios are important to me for long term knowledge and understanding. The local operators have been great at sharing experience, input, and even instruction.

Great video. Another thing that would be handy is the ability to read a map, shoot an azimuth and understand the MGRS. Being able to give your approximate location or determine somebody’s approximate location without GPS is a very handy skill to have.
So really quick I remember using a GMRS radio as a kid and I heard police dispatch come across on either CH 21 or 22. Me being a kid had no idea how the radio field worked so I'm glad I have information to spread now.
As part of our emergency planning we have also selected two additional “Family Emergency Frequencies” of which the primary is set as our “HOME” Channel. We have very short instructions laminated and placed with the radios. We dont use HTs really, rather we use our mobile 50w dual band, dual scan radios. But always nice to have a couple FT-4X with Signal Stick antennas attached to our emergency go bags. We dont call them “bug out bags”. We have also greatly reduced the number of memory channels for our HTs.
HF VHF UHF Radio was very useful during the 2021 Winter Storm Uri Texas electrical power outage. Thanks for the great content! 🏆😎
Great video Josh! I have our ARES state wide SET in the morning. It will be the first time operating HF portable. So it should be interesting. I do use my Arrow antenna for my 2m mobile when doing field operations. PVC and a Mic stand seem to work great for long distance simplex. I may make a video covering my SET experience. I rushed out the door for work tonight, I can't wait to see what equipment I forgot at home 😂
55:30 I use the Todoist app to maintain a rotation schedule for the literally dozens of batteries that need to be recharged on a periodic basis (in flashlights, firearms optics, radios, etc...). I check it every morning and recharge/rotate out a few batteries every few days so I don’t spend a day trying to recharge batteries and so I don’t forget any devices. You can set different lengths of time between reminders in the app so a flashlight that sits in a bag might only get topped off every 3 months while the rechargeable battery in my small EDC flashlight gets recharged every month (trial and error helped me figure out the rotation interval for each item).
That is cool!
For those considering propane as a backup fuel. Rule of thumb is 20 pounds of propane is equal to 5 gallons of gas. So compute your needs based off that.
I have 2400 watts of installed solar, and a 240 amp hour 24 volt battery bank. I can run ham gear for 2-3 days with no sun. Plus during the day the solar powers the fridge(described below), a chest freezer, the pellet stove for heat, and some lighting.
For a super high efficiency fridge I use a chest freezer with an outboard PID temperature controller. A conventional fridge dumps all he cold out on the floor when the door is opened, chest freezer most of the cold stays put. Conventional fridge needs 2kwh to 4kwh of power per day, the chest freezer fridge uses 450 watt hours(.5kwh) in 24 hours.Brew stores carry the temp controllers to use a freezer as a fridge.
Thank you Josh for the emergency information
You bet!
Thank you for clarifying the 'status' of digital repeaters as still viable - in a local capacity - if the internet cx is lost.
Man... I am just ripping thru your videos!!
Wish I had found you sooner!
Thank you SO MUCH!
🤜👍🤛♡♡♡
Hahah. Thanks for watching!
Aname Aname Where have you been? 💕❤️
@@georgiaprays3240 heya!! That is so cool that you are here!!! I have been watching all the radio channels and I like these ones the best! How are things, family?!?! I know, I work too much! Haha. Miss you♡♡♡
Aname Aname I just got an entry level set of radios for my family. I’m tying to learn how to it. They are charging but not programmed yet. I just found the box with the programming cable last night!💕👋🏻
@@georgiaprays3240 sweet! Aw man, that is cool♡
Our Québec brewery is pronounced Unibroo. In french, broue stands for suds.
Boréale Blonde was my favorite of theirs.
Mppt controller for solar is the way to go. Highly recommend
sry to miss the live stream i went to a C.A.R.P. meeting and working on getting my tec next month....wanted to ask you some questions sense you are the BEST ham man out there! but hope to catch you next week.
Build a wall around your twat you pussy . Btw , you still have no wall bahahahhaha 😂😂😂
can you paste the links from the slide deck? the fema links
Is there a common frequency to monitor Wildfires in UT and Colorado or is it more localized?
love that first meme
You have to modulate ssb to get power output
how do I know what tone to set for all the frs channels? in chirp when i download from the stock config, it adds the frs channels but, the tones and dtsc codes are seen as blank.
There are no tones, they are simplex (radio to radio) channels
Why not use the 3-3-3 radio plan? It's the same as the wilderness protocol, except you listen on Channel 3 (CB CH3, FRS CH3, etc. every 3 hours, starting at 12:00 AM for 3 minutes (more or less.)
Is there a reason to choose one or the other? I think Red Cross recommends the 3-3-3 protocol.
Because I am a ham radio operator?
GREAT show topic! Thank you for all you do. One question:
...are these slides by chance available online? I'm finding myself transcribing quite a bit.

@@HamRadioCrashCourse Wow! Thanks for the quick response! I'm still watchnig the video.
Please keep up the great work. I'm not yet certified but your videos are certainly giving me inspiration to get out there and do it!

Add a Faraday bag for EMP or CME events...

What do you think about CalFire cutting support for Repeaters in Shasta county, and rumors of Ca cutting it as well by closing facilities housing them?
Question: would using your phone as a gps work since it already has coordinate, elevation, etc.? Would it be something to rely kn for position finding?
It is possible to use APRS with your phone connected to your radio.
KC8RE Ilike having single band radios. I have several
if an emp happens, wont the repeaters be down? the ones not on generators
An emp fries the electronics if they are on or not. Doesnt matter what fuel or power source.
Every 3 hours at 3am, 6am, 9am, noon 3pm, 6pm, 9pm, midnight
It starts at 7:00am.
are you ref the CH3 project? channel 3, for 3 minutes On the 3's by Amrron? For the freq based radios it is what ever hailing freq is the standard. It IS easier to follow and remember kinda like sos is based on 3, and distress signals are 3 of anything.... 3 fires for example.... the Wilderness protocol is similar BUT different. as HRCC says..... I happen to like the ch3 cause it is easy to remember. BTW BOTH systems can be used with your cell phone--- whatever check in time your group has decided on.
How can I get a copy of the slide deck???
It’s on my Patreon page. Link in the description.
Sorry- Found the link!
Amazon link doesn't work anymore
Works fine for me.
Side band only shows transmit when you speak. It does not have a carrier like fm am etc. You should see swr on sideband only while you are actually speaking into the mic.
He was speaking... I think its pretty safe to assume when someone says they can’t get out, they’re actually talking into the mic to test it.
Until her tests audio on fm or am, I think it's a mic issue. No audio and ssb does not work. It did not seem like he actually tried to make a contact or monitored his audio. I had the same issue and the mic gain settings were turned down. It showed power except for ssb mode.
Ah, I see what you are saying, good point!
On SSB thereis no power out until you start talking .
I recorded segments of some of my conversation and others' and want to post it on youtube to get people interested in the hobby but mmy call sign and others' are not included. It will not be monitized. Is this legal if I edited out call signs? This was a health and welfare net.
Sure you can monetize it too. It’s open air transmissions. Why not post it ?
@@HamRadioCrashCourse I was most concerned about my editing out call signs. And thought I read cant monitize it
Where did you read that. Never heard of that.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse It may be out of context. Ill look for it. Is it ok to edit out call signs?
I am very confused by all of this. You can upload the content however you want to. No edits or edited out names.
3-3-3 midnight, 3 am, 6 am, 9am, noon, 3pm, 6 pm, 9 pm, midnight. 3 minutes.
Use a Victron solar charge controller. So much better
Josh! We’ve been trying to contact you about your car’s extended warranty!
Put me on your "Do not comment list".
Funny enough tonight 10/4/19 this video came up my first night in C.E.R.T. training. Weird though they steered away from most communication questions.
T bailey, hang in there! I think you’ll find they briefly discuss it in later sessions. When we did our drill at the end of basic course the FD supervising it did NOT want any of us to use radios for that drill. They treated it like an advanced topic. Later on the city-wide offered separate continuation modules for CERT graduates for a basic radio operation, and a near by city offered a course in being the Net Controller. In both of those modules we used FRS, but they made it clear we use the same protocols for all the spectrums (FRS, GMRS, & 2m/70cm). About a year ago we started a monthly Net with neighboring CERTs. In June we used radios during a fire evacuation drill. In August we did a county wide wildfire radio drill for CERT groups to practice passing messages.
Yeah, they kind of avoid anything over a very cursory level.
Are there simplex frequencies on GMRS and FRS?
I’m 2 years late!
I wanted this to be a one minute video..
watch it at 7.5X speed.
I dont li,e the bla bla your films are yoo long and the information quality is low , I have realy given it a try watching many but now I unsubscribe sorry
I make two kinds of videos. A live show, which is an hour or more and 10-20 minute uploads. They're differnt videos for different people. Just note the time.
