  • After spending the last 6 months converting my LiveWire to an adventure bike, I decided to test ride the range on section 3 of the Mid Atlantic Backcountry Discovery Route. What was supposed to be a quick 120 mile trip turned into a day I'll never forget. The forestry department had yet to clear the downed trees on this route, and by the time I realized how bad the situation was, I was already too far north to turn around and still make it home in time.

    Not exactly a 1990s Africa Twin 750/ KTM ADV790/ Yamaha Tenere now is it.... Lacks clearance and the ability to lighten up the front wheel to get over logs and trees in a pinch. The tires you have on it arent exactly the best either. Wayyyy too heavy, it just has too many disadvantages. A good ADV bike doesnt make you happy to see a paved road, it makes you sad to not have anymore dirt and logs to go over.

      The skid plate isn’t complete, so nose dives into higher obstacles. Newer one has been designed, just haven’t fabricated it yet - that would have negotiated better on this ride. I’m looking at something knobbier for this upcoming trip. Any recommendations?

      While the comment is correct in general and making the LiveWire competent off-road is an uphill battle, dealing with that many fallen trees in a few hours is going to test anybody.

    • @ChaseN194
      @ChaseN194 Год назад +1

      @@BrianTRice77 really depends on bike and skill level, going over trees is all about mastering a clutch up, and dealing with slippery conditions is all about rider experience. Going under some of those trees was a must, that said a lighter bike would have made for an easier ride and less damage if it was dropped. Livewire cant clutch up, mix that with a lot of weight un ill-equipped tires for the condition followed up by bad ground clearance means a lot of damage on a lot of drops with a lot of extra work for a rider who is trying to gain experience on a platform that really isnt made for it. Not saying it cant be done, just saying its possibly the most miserable and needlessly expensive way to do it.

      @AdventuresonZero Whatever it takes. I was projecting myself into your shoes and imagining a "zombie apocalypse" scenario where turning back isn't an option, and time is in short supply. A battery powered saw would definitely come in handy like a MFer.
      This is also a reminder to not ride alone, especially off of the blacktop, to at least brief someone of your ride plan, have a trauma med kit, a mylar blanket, fire making tools, and all relevant EDC gear.

    The fact that you had to haul your bike to the road you wanted to ride with your truck says everything a person needs to know about electric motorcycles. Your truck did half the adventure ride.
    If you're gonna keep riding places like that, Silky saws or Agawa Boreal saws will be your friend. Bigger the better.

      I don’t think anyone that actually has ridden or owns an electric bike can argue with you that electrics will go farther than ICE per tank/charge - there’s no argument or comparison, the range capability is not the same. Not sure why you felt the need to mention it here. If you listen closely in the beginning of the video, I highlight that I had already done the beginning portion of the route (section 3 of the MABDR) and wanted to pick back up where I left off. The route there was 40 miles, and I rode 108 miles total back home (picked truck up following day), more than halfway my friend. I have a can saw now that I keep on the bike, and for longer trips (just finished the MABDR a few weeks ago), I carry a larger fold out saw - appreciate the recommendations. Glad people are pushing ebikes. I wont, im too much of a luddite. ALso after watching how much you struggled with this bike im sold on not getting one. My dr i can lift in any situation and half the things you struggled with would have been childs play.

      @@AdventuresonZero Well you sure gave it a good workout! I guess my reservation was in the weight territory. I was sure it had the power and range. Trying to get it over obstacles and getting it stood back up when it went over. Good job getting through all the obstacles.

    Why didn't you ride the "motorcycle" to the test? That thing looks to have the ground clearance of a turtle! Maybe you should ride with others when testing something on remote logging roads.

      Riding to the test route would have affected the consumption reading of energy, I needed to see what the actual route consumption was. The turtle just finished the MABDR. It’s fine.

      The bike only gets hot when charging, but it's not like a radiating heat that you feel. If you haven't already, join some of the LiveWire Facebook groups, there are a few riders that live in Florida and can give you an idea of how that environment affects it. Don Kruse is an active member and lives in Florida, he would be the first person I talked to about it

      Get a DR. You can pick one up for next to nothing used (cheap as hell new too), give it some love and it will be your best friend after all your future bikes come and go. Dont discount low-tech... Take the discount and have the time of your life. Honesty, a DR might be the best motorcycle ever made and it will let you do everything you want to do from highway to high mountain passes. The mighty dr shines as a first bike and will only grow better as your skill improves (and upgrades which are cheap and plentiful).
