I love that you catch some of the things that I find that makes this song so good. I think you have a better language of description, but none the less, I get you. Plus I'm a bassist.
Great reaction! Someone said "This is a musician's band". I think Kanami's play/compose style is sometimes mixed up with the classical music phrases, perhaps. It maybe one of the reason they sounds so unique. Also, in the recent interview, Misa mentioned she's creating her bass part with using also piano and Akane mentioned she put all the drum score in her head before playing. btw, Justin Hawkins had the same serious face (maybe confused as he wasn't expecting that sound came out from those maid outfit girls) when he first listened to "Dice", like you, lol.
Hope you enjoy the show. You’ll find that they cram so much into the show that they just flow from one track into the next. Hopefully they might do some differently arranged intros too as they’ve done that before. Just make sure you take it all in as it flies past in a blur!
Tony, your content just gets better and better. I've heard these songs a hundred times and I heard a bunch of new stuff this time because of your breakdown. Now I'll enjoy them a hundred more times as if they were new songs. Thanks! And have fun at the concert. I want to know what you think of From Now On. Akane is freaking deadly in it.
Thanks for that great reaction. I had a bad day at work, but at least you reminded me of how grateful we should be that we have Band-Maid in our lives :-) Have a great day at the live show!
Lol, brother when you asked if Different was different from Dice I started laughing. I knew you were in a for a punch in the face. Enjoy the show, wish I could be there. BBQ'ing in Lynnwood this weekend, steaks on the grill. If you get hungry point your rig north. Have a killer week.
Going to see them live? Huge W! It’s crazy to me how good their pocket is live. Lots of great groups in the studio struggle matching up during live performances.
Re: your question about the opening vocals for "Different" - these two songs were not back-to-back during the online stream. These were selected for J-LOD (which was a government program to bolster businesses that depend on in-person attendance during Covid). They needed a live performance longer than five minutes, so they put these two songs from their May 10th live stream. They often get the opening pitches and tempo through their in-ear monitors, though. "Choose Me" has the same problem, how to start together, in tempo and on pitch.
MISA said in a recent interview that she will get a demo from Kanami in the morning and have the bassline written by the end of the day. The mind boggles. They have all begun writing their parts on a keyboard and/or in a DAW to avoid repeating themselves by falling into muscle- memory habits on their instruments. So they write their own parts but _then_ still have to learn them 😵
makes sense, and I wonder if Kanami came up with the idea, I forget which two songs it is, but Champ of Medium pointed it out once, that Kanami unconsciously recycled the solo on a couple of tracks. (And of course Iron Maiden infamously recycles whole melodies)
@@bishopsteiner7134 She "recycled" a bit of the solo from "Secret My Lips" for the extended solos in "Domination" but (someone correct me if I'm wrong) they didn't play "Secret My Lips" in the 14 Feb 2020 Okyu-ji so it wasn't like anyone heard it twice in the same show. For me, that's fine. She's not claiming anyone else's work, and she's free to quote her own work any time she wants. In reality, musicians "quote" bits and pieces from other peoples songs and it's okay.
Damnit brother, I am seeing Band Maid clips all over RUclips. I am Fn so envious of you for getting to see them. Hopefully next year Band Maid and The Warning will tour together!! I would not miss that for anything.
Thanks for another great reaction and analysis, I always learn so much from your videos. I find Band Maid really inspiring when it comes to musical arrangement, I just lack the knowledge/time/energy to try and apply it. Other priorities in life and all that. Other people touched on this but yeah, English loan words are common in Japan and end up in music a lot. We use a lot of loan words in English, too, we're used to it so it doesn't stand out to us. Sublime worked a lot of Spanish into their lyrics, for example, and tons of words we use all the time are actually French, stuff like that. So it's not that surprising when you think about it, we're just seeing it in a different context. Does that make sense?
The most beautiful and amazing band on the planet. I have to wait until Wed Oct 19 to see them here in Phoenix and the wait is KILLING ME! Enjoy them tonight. Akane is a beautiful tasty beast, one of my favorite drummers ever
MISA MISA MISA!!!!! Dice (the first 15 seconds of the MV) was what changed Me from a Fan to a Die Hard Fanatic that traveled 1/2 way round the World to see them Live back in 2019.
Yeah this band has been around for I think 6 years and are really actually pretty good and they still keep their same composure of their costumes and everything
I get more out of Tony's analysis and commentary every time!---which enables me to get even more out of BandMaid every time !!!!!!!!!! "interrupt" all you want to, Tony-----I'd call it education rather than interruption ! It's a bit like you are cleaning the windshield----everything is that vital bit clearer.
Oh, that was a great and insightful reaction. I always like when people who understand music - and you do obviously - review Band-Maid. I always learn something which is nice. This is a very thoughtful band, from the composition, to the playing as well as the lyrics. My favorite Band by far. Enjoy the show in Seattle, they are fantastic live. Saw them 16 times live since 2015 and they never disappointed. From this two I go with Different.
I am listening to the same song aren't I? What you hear and explains enhances my listening experience. Thank you I don't hear what you hear until you explain it.
They played Domination, Dice, and Different in their Japan shows. I suspect Different may get swapped out for something they think might be more popular with Americans. But since you're at the first US show, no idea what they may dust off. I'm going to 3 on the tail end of the tour.
While most "reactors" bug the shit out of me constantly stopping to say, "Wow. That was so cool!" with absolutely no musical insight, your pausing doesn't bother me at all because as a musician, I can tell you know what the fuck you're talking about. You are by far the best and I really appreciate your channel.
It's funny what you say at the end of the video about becoming a musician or starting playing an instrument. :D I have been a drummer for more than 20 years and been listening to Band-Maid for about 1 year now. I have bought a bass one month ago, because of Misa. Even if I have thinking about buying one for the last 15 years, she is the one who changed everything.
Dice is,aside Choose me and Blooming,an example of almost perfectionin what refers about a song should be.The melody, the symcopation, the lyrics, the rythm line.Well everything is there.
Heck yea man, I appreciate you being able to explain the intricacies of the music, instead of listening to 10 seconds of a studio recording and saying "it's too compressed" like Rick Beato did. thumbs up!
I was there when they STOLE THE SHOW at Aftershock on Sunday, it was AWESOME!! Can't wait to see the full 2 hour set on Friday in SF, although I will probably Spontaneously Combust!🔥 Well, at least I'd go out HAPPY!! Thanks again, Tony! 🤘🤩🤘
Just a correction it's Gacharic Spin, not trying to be the spelling police, but if someone came across your comment and typed in Gaspharic in to RUclips without the Spin the first result is for a review of tobacco LOL.Just want to make sure more people discover the great band that is Gacharic Spin. Tony really needs to react to MineSet from them.
From my memory, they wanted the songs to be catchy and likable by all. That’s why they use English parts, there’s usually more than 2 words but the accent and speed of the songs make it hard to tell. It’s also a note that English is trendy in Japan, they wear clothing with English on it (sometimes not even knowing what it means) because it’s just trendy. So that could have something to do with it as well.
glad to hear you got a ticket for the Seattle show. i'm gonna be driving down from Vancouver.. i hear parking sucks but i'm hoping i'll find something if i give myself a few hours. for anyone else in the Seattle area.. there are still resale tickets currently going for $36 at Ticketmaster. i'll give it up to Different.. but only coz i gotta pick one. answer would probably be different on some other day. their songwriting has clearly progressed since DICE, but it's still an absolute banger.
I THOUGHT OF A GOOD ONE. Made in Abyss - Hanezeve Caradhina. Literally the entire OST for Made in Abyss is a masterpiece but this one is just gorgeous. Kevin Penkin is one of the most talented composers in the game. Dude won the anime award for best score in 2017 for this anime and another best score in 2020 for a different show. Oh yeah, and he has background composing for full orchestras.
Recently two of my favorite bands got together, Band Maid and The Warning (which by the way you should react) at the aftershock festival, beautiful moment.
this is the second reaction of this band that I watch in this channel.. they are awesome, isn't my favorite music but for some reason I feel it so great. thanks Tony!
DICE isn't as different as Different is different. Nor is Different as dicey as Dice is Dicey🤔But one thing's for sure... both are different as dice! 😉 Thx, Tony!
Hello. I don't consider myself a language expert or anything like that, but in recent decades the Japanese language has incorporated many foreign words and terms, especially in the entertainment industry (music and anime). It is clear that globalization has played a vital role in this and many of these terms/words may have been adopted because they were 'easy to remember' or simply 'sounded good'. However, there is an additional reason why it is common in the Japanese music industry to hear words in another language (such as English or German) or phrases that can simply be hummed (you know, the classic "na, na-na, na -na, na-na") and that's how the songs are closer to those who don't speak Japanese. In fact, the members of Band-Maid explicitly mentioned that topic in an interview a long time ago. And yes they are right, because if you or I were at one of their concerts and they play Domination, it is almost certain that we will at least sing the "Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello~". Regards ^^

I'm really glad that you are going to see them. Make sure you try to meet Wave Potter (another musician and reactor), as he will be there as well. If you have the time of your life and want to see them again I still have a couple of extra tickets to the east coast shows (DC, Philly, NYC, Boston) 😜 I'm always so psyched for your reactions, along with Champ, Wave, Ryan, and a few other musician reactors, it really helps me work through not just "that" I love these songs, but "why" I love these songs. What chance you think they could secure a date with ACL? Yea I know that is a tough one to get. However these festivals while great are limited in exposure. They just played at House Of Blues in San Diego which was also outstanding. However I get the impression their label might be underrepresenting them here. They need some big wins here like Tower Theater in Philly. Red Rocks, Morrison in Colorado. Ryman auditorium in Nashville. Maybe Ottobar in Baltimore. Yea these are iconic venues but woukd be great exposure. Good Reaction BTW!! 🦊💕🤘
Shame you didnt do the MVs - i think they are a lot better than the lives for these 2 songs- mainly the balance is off- and they are a bit simplified. Difference especially suffers from the lead being too quiet- its a very hectic song and when the instruments are not all clear it muddies the song up. I like Dice a lot more than different.
Their music even makes MISA emotional. She asks that the Masters & Princesses at the servings bear with her if it does. She no longer has her bangs to hide behind. As for the Click, BAND-MAIDs use of Backing Tracks is so smooth. They just lock in. Unless something is obvious you almost don't even notice them at all. Kanami records all the music befor she gives it to the others. Miku will decide the lyrics with some input from Saiki as to what's cool and what is uncool. Saiki is the abettor of cool. But Miku decides if a lyric should be in English or not. And English in Japanese songs is considered cool.
As a musician this shocked me. The complexity of bass and drums would get simplified by most western producers. Japan demands complexity, and giving the audience the same thing again in a verse is considered an insult to the listener. Band Maid sometimes even the choruses music will change each time. As for speed, some Japanese I spoke to when I was in Tokyo, bluntly referred to western rock as Sleeping Cow Music. hahaha. Checkout Freedom live for a hot drum solo. Tokyo is the new Seattle for hard rock .
So Tony I’m curious, where have you decided to be during the concert in relation to the band ? In other words who are you most interested in watching play ?
Smart man. I have opted for the same type seats. Of course if I were 20 years old again it would be hard to resist the urge be as close as possible to stage right and yelling Misa Misa Misa ! every song break.😊
Serious answer to the question about the inclusion of words in English; much like most people who know a little bit of a different language, English is regarded by a lot of people who don't speak it very fluently as "cool" - or, in this case, probably "rock". Rock is primarily an American thing, after all, so having a bit of English tossed in works on multiple levels; it's cool, it's more rock than "just" being in your own language, and if you ever tour outside your own country, it's something people in other countries might have an easier time latching onto to sing along with. All that aside, "Different" was also the opening song to a recent anime, which partially explains the slight difference in songwriting style as well as the inclusion of a little more English than usual; it's not uncommon for high-energy anime openings to have an extra sprinkling of English, for better or worse.
Ah figured I would mention Babymetal just dropped their new single a few hours ago. It's the first single from their upcoming album The Other One which drops on March 24, 2023 I think. different really shines in a studio recording. There is so much going on in that song
Sorry to hear about the work day
Lol, brother when you asked if Different was different from Dice I started laughing.

Congratulations on making to the show!!! Wow!! 😀
So they write their own parts but _then_ still have to learn them 😵
Oh sheeeet that's good plan
makes sense, and I wonder if Kanami came up with the idea, I forget which two songs it is, but Champ of Medium pointed it out once, that Kanami unconsciously recycled the solo on a couple of tracks. (And of course Iron Maiden infamously recycles whole melodies)
@@DrumRollTonyReacts When writing parts for a whole drumline I'm guessing you don't have that potential problem to deal with 😉
@@bishopsteiner7134 She "recycled" a bit of the solo from "Secret My Lips" for the extended solos in "Domination" but (someone correct me if I'm wrong) they didn't play "Secret My Lips" in the 14 Feb 2020 Okyu-ji so it wasn't like anyone heard it twice in the same show.
That does make sense
Hmmm. I'll have a coffee and a croissant and mull this over. Wait a second:

The most beautiful and amazing band on the planet. I have to wait until Wed Oct 19 to see them here in Phoenix and the wait is KILLING ME! Enjoy them tonight. Akane is a beautiful tasty beast, one of my favorite drummers ever
I’ll see you there in Phoenix.
Comment for the algorithm. Tony gets it. Rock on brother.

Thank you
I don't hear what you hear until you explain it.
Honestly my favorite part of DRT's reactions are the vocal sound effects
😅😅
I'm going to see them play in Philly in two weeks from wed.! Can't wait! ♥
I'll be there too! Glad you got tickets.
So entertaining and so informative for us 'non musicians'. Always look forward to your reactions. Your students must love coming to work with you.
Whenever I listen to Band Maid I feel like we stole Dad's convertible muscle car and Akane is driving.
Good one Dave!
🤣👍🏻
@P in D² Hahaha, sadly i think that makes me the pony tail guy from the parking garage...
In Japan, as well as the rest of the world, a lot of English words have entered the lexicon. Even when there are perfectly good local words.
They played Domination, Dice, and Different in their Japan shows. I suspect Different may get swapped out for something they think might be more popular with Americans. But since you're at the first US show, no idea what they may dust off. I'm going to 3 on the tail end of the tour.
This band is soooo good! Enough said! Superb reaction Tony👍👍
Thank you for the nice comment
It's funny what you say at the end of the video about becoming a musician or starting playing an instrument. :D
I have been a drummer for more than 20 years and been listening to Band-Maid for about 1 year now.
I have bought a bass one month ago, because of Misa.
Even if I have thinking about buying one for the last 15 years, she is the one who changed everything.
Dice is,aside Choose me and Blooming,an example of almost perfectionin what refers about a song should be.The melody, the symcopation, the lyrics, the rythm line.Well everything is there.
you need to give a reaction from the end of the band maid concert you are attending

Enjoy the show! I get to see them next week and it doesn't seem real. Your reactions are always awesome and entertaining.
Its very normal to have english words and sentences mixed in the japanese lyrics, besides Band Maid, Gaspharic Spin, Nemophila do that also frequently
@@omdtdz Mindset 😉
In the past English phrases were used to make the song sounds 'cool' now bands do it where English fits the rhythm better...I think.

I think my first introduction to BAND-MAID is because "Different" is used as Opening Song for Log Horizon Season 3.
Now we're talking 😤👌
Enjoy the concert on Wednesday night. 😊

"Different" always makes me think, "Evil Circus Music"! hahaha
glad to hear you got a ticket for the Seattle show. i'm gonna be driving down from Vancouver.. i hear parking sucks but i'm hoping i'll find something if i give myself a few hours. for anyone else in the Seattle area.. there are still resale tickets currently going for $36 at Ticketmaster.
i'll give it up to Different.. but only coz i gotta pick one. answer would probably be different on some other day. their songwriting has clearly progressed since DICE, but it's still an absolute banger.
Thanks Tony! Great per usual. "Dice" the Music Video not by much.
I like musician reaction coz they really know the details of some parts they play I've been gaining knowledge
this is the second reaction of this band that I watch in this channel.. they are awesome, isn't my favorite music but for some reason I feel it so great. thanks Tony!

If you have the time of your life and want to see them again I still have a couple of extra tickets to the east coast shows (DC, Philly, NYC, Boston) 😜
I'm always so psyched for your reactions, along with Champ, Wave, Ryan, and a few other musician reactors, it really helps me work through not just "that" I love these songs, but "why" I love these songs. Make sure to post an after show commentary. I am gonna see them in NYC at the end of the month.

The Dice studio version is great too. they just get the gtr balances better in the studio mixing process.
My son always gets aggrevated at me for breaking songs down, being a bass player for 40 years I can't help it, lol BAND MAID is very intricate and progressive in their arrangements, love them
Because of decades of Hollywood and pop music mainly being in English to a non-English speaker it sounds "Cool" to throw a word or two in between the lyrics.

I'm ready now. Just play it ffs.

I sat up high to get the full audio mix and see the entire stage.
