That HBO intro never gets old
They should keep it
Yes.
1985, living the best time in my lifetime!!
Can I go back please?
I turned 4 years old in July of 85, and one of my earliest TV memories from then that was not a cartoon was watching Miami Vice with my dad while I played with my hotwheels/Matchbox cars sitting in front of the TV, and thinking how cool Sunny, and Crockett were riding around in their Daytona. 👍👍
I was two and a half back then so no memories
I was 7 in 1985, and never watched Miami Vice but remember everyone around wearing Miami Vice t-shirts, and for some reason I remember wanting one even though I had never watched the show LOL
Wow.
I love you for doing all this for us aging Gen-Xers
It is definitely more for the aging Woodstock boomers and generation jones boomers not generation X because that were kind of young.
Woodstock boomers were born in between 1946 to 1954 and Generation jones boomers 1955 to 1964
You don't have to be an Xer or alive in 85 to appreciate it
Oh, man, Misfits of Science. I adored that show. And that HBO logo in space bumper never fails to hit that perfect nostalgia button.
Man steps out of time capsule that reads, "Do not open until the year 2021."
Man: Am I in Hell?
Tori Amos in the Kellogg's Just Right ad
I totally noticed that!
And she almost knocked the guy’s glasses off at the end!!
She is.
I'm Very Fond of 1985..Somewhere I Have a Photo of a 6Year Old Me Standing, With My Aunt, In Front Of a BTTF Poster, at the Local Mall! 😎🤘📼
I discovered a Radio Shack about 40 minutes from my house and drove out, hoping to make a video for RUclips and actually start doing something with my channel! Sadly, I got there and found out it was open by appointment only. Sigh. It was a real, branded Radio Shack, though!
Yeah most people think that Radio Shack is gone which isn't true. None of their stores are corporate anymore though, just franchises.
There was a Caldor near my grandparents' house in West Orange, NJ. Loved going in their toy section. I'm pretty sure I got a Luke Skywalker ROTJ lightsaber there in 97.
Caldor in Parsippany too!
Wild Musk Patchouli cologne?!?
Suddenly Axe Body Spray doesn't seem so terrible
At least it's not High Karate cologne 🤣😂🤣
Smells nice.
Hai Karate was a lethal weapon.
The classic 1985 to 1990 HBO introductory logo. Heck to the yeah.
I remember hbo in space
Wow.
Digging the fun facts, reminds me of pop up videos. Might want to bring that back too.
That would be fun have a few hour long commercial specials with the pop ups telling interesting facts about the commericals, and/or the products within them.
Wow.
And of course live aid how could you forget! Freddy mercury and Queen's legendary performance! Great stuff from a great year in pop culture! Thanks, Dave!

# sad 😥😢😞😔😪💔.
Damn it Dave
Adjust the tracking my dude
I wonder if Just Right cereal is still around? Looked delicious. Loving this new format. I like all the background info you are including😀👏
Thanks, MKII!!
@@DavesArchives you too dave.
That's Tori Amos in the Just Right ad.
It's a funny coincidence (to me, anyway) that my sister was born in '85 and an episode with commercials from that year comes out the day after her birthday.
One of the things I like to do with ads from the '80s is looking for products or brands that don't exist anymore. Don't ask me why that's interesting to me, it just is.
Generra clothes. lol Not thought of that brand probably since that year.
Yes.
Dave is one of my fav tubers. Man , thanks for doing this channel .
I appreciate that, and most definitely Dusk!
@@DavesArchives wow.
Dave always brings the memories back the right way! Thank you and awesome work (: Salute to 85!!!
Thank you Dave, I love the new intro, nice to hear a little history of the vid/tape. I love seeing any vid from my high school days:)
You got it, Brian! Thanks as always :D
@@DavesArchives thanks dave.
1985 was also The Year Nickelodeon launched Nick at Nite!😍❤️📺🎶
no way - didnt know that! I'll include that on the next one :D
@@DavesArchives okay dave.
Thanks For Sharing!
Wow rice krispies. Survived the decades..Lol
Thank you for being our time machine conductor. 😃💗
It's my pleasure!!
@@DavesArchives your pleasure dave.
AWESOME!!!!!
Thank you very much! I do tend to complain about technology, but the one thing I tell my kids that I appreciate is that technology is now like a time machine. This is definitely the coolest part except that it makes me sad to see how things have changed.
Well said!
@@DavesArchives you are dave.
Love the intro talking about what was going on at the time!
I loved Misfits Of Science, I wish Shout Factory would put it on DVD.
The early CGI razor commercial is out of this world! 😎
You should do a retro Halloween commercials episode in october
Okay.
I’m having another one of my anemoia episodes again watching these commercials lol
🎶🎵When I was 9 years old, it was a very good year!🎵🎶
I LOVE THE YEAR 1985---WAY MORE THAN YOU READING THIS!!!...(WAY MORE!)
the space maker line was so cool.
Thank you for these
9:18 creeeeepppyyy dude 🤣
Those are bronzed baby shoes.
Yes.
another great compilation of ads! yeah gotta love that classic toys r us jingle!
The best!
@@DavesArchives you are dave.
Aahh! Dave's archives ✨ The youtube channel 🔥✨ you didn't know you needed. ☺️💯♥️🌴🎶💪👍🏄♀️🙏😁😎❤️
You're the best!
@@DavesArchives you're the best dave.
I remember Caldor. Bradlees was also around back then.
Remember them.
Loved Misfits of Science as a kid. Back then superhero shows were a rare commodity, unlike today where they are a dime a dozen.
1985: Super Mario Brothers, one of the best-selling and greatest video games of all time and started one of the most iconic franchises, comes out on the NES, a console which helped revitalize the US video game industry following the video game crash of 1983.
The space maker line was pretty neat
Very cool.
I read on Twitter That Toys R Us is coming back
before The Holiday Season This Year!😍❤️📺🎶
Now that would be super cool to see!
They still exist in Canada, and a few other countries, and we did get the Geoffrey's toy box popup stores inside of places like Kroger's which I remember seeing I think in 2019, so that's something.
@@CommodoreFan64 there was once one in paramus where toys r us used to be headquartered (it's now in wayne NJ).
That was wild seeing Tori Amos in the Kellogs Just Right commercial.
People were really happy in the 80s.
Magical.
Great work. Time Machine.
Indeed!
@@DavesArchives me too dave.
That Amazing Stories episode is *fantastic*
It's on my watch list, for sure :)
@@DavesArchives have u seen the new series on Apple 🍎
Tom Willet aka FeatureMan on RUclips is in the Amazing Stories episode seen here.
1986 Dodge Daytona 0-60 mph. 8.5 seconds
2012 Dodge Grand Caravan 0-60 7.9 seconds
I spy Tori Amos in the Kelloggs commercial.
Tori Amos in the Just Right commercial
I’m surprised Betamax subdued to vhs considering things were getting smaller
There where a number of factors that led to VHS winning the consumer market:
1. VHS was a more open standard
2. the open standard led to more manufactures of VCR/VHS Players, Tapes, and VHS Camcorders
3. All that led to lower prices than Beta/BetaMax
4. VHS had a longer run/record time from the start compared to Sony BetaMax
5. VHS players as a whole produced less motor noise, which many consumers prefered
6. Hollywood latched onto VHS more that Betamax again because of initial longer run time of the tapes
7. The adult film industry also latched on to VHS because of run times, and lower cost to produce VHS
8. Hollywood was able to eventually include Macrovision copy protection on VHS(that why if you made a copy of some commercial tapes they would fade in, and out without a special box to compensate for the signal difference)
9. rental stores preferred VHS again due to the lower cost, and wider selection of titles vs. Betamax
10. Most consumers could not tell a difference in quality running VCR/VHS players over 75 Ohm RF, or RCA Composite cables, and/or did not care vs. the slightly higher resolution of Sony Betamax.
11. VHS-C(compact) helped keep VHS going for home consumers with smaller camcorders, and being able to playback their tapes with a simple adapter in almost any VCR/VHS player.
Having said that the professional markets like TV studios for news, smaller movie productions, and even big budget TV productions latched onto SONY BETA in various forms for decades well in the late 00's because of the higher quality equipment, and tapes, which from my understanding was also more reliable.
@@CommodoreFan64 yea sounds legit I remember my first one was Betamax loved it then it went out and got a vhs and an adapter to put the Betamax tape in to play it lol
@@thevanillagorilla71I'm afraid you misremembering, as VHS, and BETA are not compatible, do to record speeds, the drum sizes, the slight differences of the chemical composition of the tapes themselves, and the angle the heads recorded onto the tape, so there was no adapter to play Betamax on a VCR/VHS player. The only adapter a VCR/VHS player can take is either a manual, or battery powered automatic VHS-C to VHS adapter.
Having said that you can take the actual tape out of a BETAMax tape shell, and put it into professional VHS tape cleaning machine inside of a VHS Shell to help clean off mold, and then put it back into a BETAmax shell, but that's it!
@@CommodoreFan64 just like how bluray defeated hd dvd
@@kascnef True, but in some aspects I still prefer HD-DVD as it was easier to decode vs. Blu-Ray on PC, the picture quality was nearly the same, and over time the players would have been cheaper to produce using standard red lasers that have been around since the 80's vs. specialized blue ones.
I like the intro so that I can see your face. Any plans on uploading old HD commercials during HDTV early years?
8:18 the voice of Dan Ingram, who New Yorkers will know from 77 WABC and WCBS-FM.

@@DavesArchives that comment is so long dave, you keep my head spin.
The year i was born !!! Love your videos and love your channel !! Keep up the good work !!
The irony at 4:16, when the two Molly Ringwald girls in the Generra outfits are snickering at the punk girl in the black biker jacket, is that the girl in the leather jacket looks less dated today than the girls in the 80's wear.
TORI AMOS @5:04 !!!!!
That's a nice hat.
Great year “ 😊
I wish it would be possible to watch the whole tape. With all ads and announcements. In its old school “low res” look. But that is to 1.000.000 copyright rules it is impossible.
Of course I can stream Miami vice in HD somewhere but that is not the same.
I was 3 years old haha
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the Nolreco commercial. They used computer graphics. Could’ve been Pixar. They did commercials then
i wish you could post the whole episode.
Electric knifes... Are they still around?
Misfits of Science was awesome
Awesome commercials, even McDonald's looks depressing nowadays.
Damn! I am glad they make more than 7 sizes of women's jeans now.
I was only 2 in 85. How do I remember the dodge commercial? Did it run a long time?
The 80's was the best decade in human existence.
And I’m from NY
5:04, 6:04, 14:27
is that Tori freaking Amos at 5:18 or am I seeing things??
Does anyone know who the lady in the gold champagne ad was?
3:54 twitter?
Are those ....whyte peeple? In commercials??? I never knew there was such a thing
" were "
Where do you get those awesome caps?
I got the Radio Shack hat from here :) - www.radioshack.com/products/radio-shack-trucker-hat
@@DavesArchives wow dave wow.
Is that Tori Amos?
Potatoes in the 80s and 90s were horrible. Often you would peel one only to find it was rotten and empty once you sliced it. You could go thru a whole 5 lb sack and only get enough pieces for 1 meal. Weird but true.
Ads from 1985 (the best times from 1985).
Wow.
Chic now seems to make pants that are for "women of a certain age."
tori amos?
It was!
Thanks man.
She is.
