Listen to the voice of Buddha! Apparently BUddha's voice sounds a lot like massive analog synths. Absolutely love this live version, we're so lucky someone recorded this.
I remember seeing that and having my nine year old mind blown. Not only was the music from another planet but Phil Oakey looked completely unique. It sounded so futuristic yet now those synths seem so primitive! Still an absolute masterpiece and for me the true Human League.
You had to be a real fan of the music to know this song it's kind of like the Daryl Hall John Oates song I forget the name of it but it has super electric guitar in it I'm one of the albums that you absolutely freaking love
I remember being in a nightclub in SF in about 1985 and the DJ put this on at full volume it literally shook the building no one knew who it was but the dance floor was packed

A few "80s songs" were from the 70s. Being Boiled, Are 'Friends' Electric,Video Killed the Radio Star,' The Model - a hit in '81, recorded and first released in '78...
@@lyrimetacurl0 it's scary, just how long ago it was, isn't it? The years go by but I still totally love this band and this song. I've been a musician for a long time and I'm thankful that the League, both versions of the band, inspired me so much as a lonely, not quite fitting in, kid.
"Why does something made 34 years ago have more balls, power and originality than a LOT of music made now?" - My guess is commercial risk. Many groups back then just made music that they wanted to make. If it came a hit, then great.
***** Sorry, I meant all of those bands did state Kraftwerk as influence, but I don't believe they were honest. When they started they were punk with electronic core and rhythm machines or electronic drums - and were revolutionary, unlike Kraftwerk, which albums were never considered revolutionary in the press when released. This is my own opinion, when I heard Radioactivity LP in 1976 I almost fell asleep. When I heard Boys and Girls I was blown away. But why always emphasize Kraftwerk - this is like saying that 1000 bands are influenced by Byrds or other 1000 by Doors etc. Some people think that mentioning Can or Faust or Neu is a sign of big knowledge. I may be a little stupid, but why then not a single German new wave act wasn't into them but into British new wave?
+Boris Rangelov Going back to my origianl comment "We had simply never heard a sound like it before". Human League never sounded the same as Kraftwerk - but both bands are amazing and influential.
Hi! Just read your post on Being Boiled by The Human League. Yes, synthie-pop made it´s first steps in the early 70ies. German Band "Kraftwerk" had much influence on this developement. A lot of bands like THL or OMD say, that they were influenced by Kraftwerk. A milestone "Wir sind die Roboter" (´We are the robots"). Their greatest hit "Das Model". Greetings from Munich, Germany.
I had never heard or seen this song performed, nor heard of it, until reading Sweet Dreams by Dylan Jones. Such a wealth of knowledge and all told by those who were there. Highly recommeded!
Saw the HL at Eric's in Liverpool in 1979 after following the punk movement. Really different to the usual bands though great. Also loved their pop records on Dare.
I do enjoy the sheer musical bravery evidenced here. Synth and vocals only...the warmth of those synths and Phil's vocals catching the mood perfectly. The greatness achieved lives on. Sparsity, when done this well is always a statement - Psycho Killer, and latterly Seven Nation Army - thinks, reflects, enjoys...
Wow, first time I've seen and heard this version. They've released so many versions of this song :-) love it. Thank you for uploading this. Theres so much TV gold thats been lost simply because the tech wasn't available to store it back in the day. Thankfully that doesn't apply with audio.
Saw them around this time playing in a meeting room at Sheffield University Students Union with Thunderbirds and comic book slides projected onto a small screen. Think they played the now disgraced Gary Glitter song Rock and Roll Part 1 as an encore. Still got and play the Fast Records single. This is a superb live version with of course the late great Tony Wilson at the end...always ahead of the game. Thanks
'Listen to the voice of Buddha, saying stop your sericulture.............'Absolutely immense track on a Roland Jupiter (though I also recommend playing through a Novation mininova, pick one up for £250 and form your own League people!)
A whopping Jup 4. I swear, every note that pops out of that thing is instant Human League, and other early '80s Synth-Sound. For me, it's like a time machine...
People were still saying punk was the future in 1978, but this was the start of a far bigger musical revolution that sent punk to its graveyard in 1980 and was the most popular form of British music in the early 80s.

@supadoh I'm talking about the first synth close up at 0:30. Its a Roland Jupiter 4, underrated an less advanced than J8, but better in terms of its unique sound IMHO.. I was not talking about that Roland System 100 that appears later.
Für mich ein Klassiker der elektronischen Musik. Diese Tv Aufnahme ist stellenweise etwas anders als die Vinyl Version. Vielen Dank für das Hochladen von dem Video :))
Nothing wrong with Punk music, one of the best genres out there and still is around with loads of Punk bands around. Don't forgot, this style did not last very long, as it was replaced with the commercial vocal sound. I much prefer this style
Moroder had proper studio to work in with a whole host of equipment to work with, Human league built some of their first synths from scratch themselves from kit form, Martyn Ware had to chose between learning to drive or buying a synth, he bought the synth and he still doesn't drive to this day. Finally it's two different types of music Moroder was dance music with the same few words repeated throughout the music Human League were more industrial Avant-garde with meaningful lyrics.
Looks just a tad like Bryan Ferry there to me..... The 70s were brilliant - from prog, through disco, punk and new wave. That decade had just about everything.
