인류가 하나님을 믿음에 있어서 가장 슬픈 일은 하나님의 사역에서 자기 경영을 하면서 하나님의 경영을 등한시한다는 사실이고, 가장 크게 실패한 일은 하나님께 순종하고 하나님을 경배하려 하면서도 한편으로는 자신이 꿈꾸는 종착지를 구상하고, 어떻게 해야 가장 큰 복과 가장 좋은 종착지를 얻을 수 있을지 계산하고 있다는 것이다. 설령 모든 사람이 비참하고 가증스럽고 가련한 자신의 모습을 알았다 해도, 자신의 꿈과 소망을 쉽게 포기할 수 있는 사람이 몇이나 되겠느냐? 자신의 발걸음을 멈추고 더 이상 스스로를 위해 계산하지 않을 사람이 또 누가 있겠느냐? 하나님께 필요한 것은 그의 경영을 완성하는 데 긴밀하게 협력하는 사람이고, 하나님께 순종하기 위해 하나님의 경영 사역에 몸과 마음을 쏟아붓는 사람이다. 날마다 하나님께 두 손을 내밀며 구걸하는 사람은 필요하지 않고, 하나님을 위해 얼마간 헌신하고 빚을 받아 내려는 사람은 더더욱 필요하지 않다. 하나님은 얼마간 바친 뒤 그것을 밑천으로 삼아 기대 살아가려는 사람을 증오하고, 하나님의 경영 사역에는 반감을 가지고 있으면서 하늘에 올라가 복받는 일에만 관심 있는 냉혈 인간을 증오한다. 하나님이 구원 사역을 하는 기회를 틈타 제 이익을 챙기려는 사람은 더더욱 증오한다. 이런 자들은 하나님이 경영 사역을 통해 이루려는 것이 무엇인지, 얻으려는 것이 무엇인지에 아무런 관심도 없으며, 자신이 어떻게 해야 하나님이 사역하는 틈을 타 복을 받을 수 있는지에만 관심이 있고, 하나님의 마음을 전혀 헤아리지 않은 채 자기 앞날과 운명에만 관심을 가지기 때문이다. 하나님의 경영 사역에 반감을 품으며, 하나님이 어떻게 인류를 구원하는지, 하나님의 뜻이 무엇인지에 조금도 흥미를 느끼지 못하는 자들은 모두 하나님의 경영 사역 밖에서 자신이 좋아하는 일을 하고 있다. 하나님은 그들의 행위를 기억하지도, 칭찬하지도 않으며, 더욱이 좋아하지도 않는다.

아득한 우주에 수많은 생령이 번식하며 살아가고 있다. 그들은 생명의 법칙을 따라 순환하며, 불변의 법칙을 지키고 있다. 죽은 사람은 산 사람의 이야기를 갖고 떠나고, 산 사람은 또 죽은 사람의 역사적 비극을 재연하며 살아간다. 인류는 이런 의문을 품지 않을 수 없다. ‘우리는 왜 사는가? 우리는 왜 죽는가? 누가 이 세상을 주관하고 있는가? 누가 이 인류를 창조했는가? 이것이 정녕 대자연의 조화일까? 인류가 진정으로 자기 운명을 지배할 수 있을까?’ 인류는 수천 년간 끊임없이 이런 질문들을 던졌지만 불행하게도 이런 문제에 집착할수록 과학에 대한 갈망은 점점 더 커졌다. 과학은 사람의 육에 일시적인 만족과 짧은 누림을 주었지만, 영혼 깊은 곳의 고독과 적막, 감출 수 없는 공포, 무력감에서 벗어나게 해 주지는 못했다. 인류는 그저 눈으로 볼 수 있고 머리로 이해할 수 있는 과학 지식으로 심령을 마비시키고 있었을 뿐, 비밀 탐구를 위한 발걸음을 멈추지는 못했다. 인류는 우주 만물의 주재자가 누구인지 전혀 모르고, 인류의 시초와 미래는 더더욱 알지 못한 채 그저 속절없이 법칙에 따라 살아가기만 할 뿐이다. 그 누구도 그것을 벗어날 수 없고 또 그 누구도 그것을 바꿀 수 없다. 만물 가운데서, 또 하늘 위에서 태고부터 영원까지 계신 그분이 이 모든 것을 주재하고 있기 때문이다. 그는 인류가 목도한 적이 없는 분이요, 인류가 안 적이 없는 분이며, 인류가 한 번도 존재를 믿지 않았던 분이다. 하지만 그는 인류의 선조에게 생기를 불어넣고 인류에게 생명을 부여한 분이요, 인류가 살 수 있도록 자양분을 공급해 주는 분이고, 오늘날까지 인류를 인도한 분이며, 나아가 인류가 유일하게 의지하여 살아갈 수 있는 분이다. 그는 만물을 주재하며, 우주 만물의 생령을 주재한다. 그는 사계절을 주관하며, 풍상설우(風霜雪雨)의 변화를 조절한다. 그는 인류에게 햇빛을 선사하고, 밤의 장막도 베풀어 주었다. 그는 하늘과 땅을 펴고, 인류를 위해 산과 강과 호수, 그리고 그 속의 생물까지 준비했다. 그의 행사는 모든 곳에 존재하고, 그의 능력 역시 모든 곳에 존재한다. 그의 지혜는 모든 곳에 존재하고, 그의 권병 역시 모든 곳에 존재한다. 이 모든 규율과 법칙은 그의 행사를 구현하고, 그의 지혜와 권병을 나타낸다. 누가 그의 주재에서 벗어날 수 있겠느냐? 누가 그의 안배에서 벗어날 수 있겠느냐? 만물은 다 그의 눈앞에서 살아가고, 더욱이 그의 주재하에서 살아간다. 그의 행사와 능력 앞에서 사람은 그가 분명히 존재하며, 만물을 주재한다는 사실을 인정할 수밖에 없다. 그 외에는 어떤 존재도 이 우주를 주관할 수 없고, 더욱이 인류에게 이토록 무한히 많은 것을 공급해 줄 수 없다. 네가 하나님의 행사를 알든 모르든, 또 하나님의 존재를 믿든 믿지 않든, 너의 운명을 하나님이 정해 놓았다는 사실은 의심의 여지가 없으며, 만물을 주재하는 분이 영원히 하나님이라는 사실도 의심의 여지가 없다. 하나님의 존재와 하나님의 권병은 인류가 알 수 있는지, 깨달을 수 있는지에 따라 결정되는 것이 아니다. 오직 하나님만이 인류의 과거, 현재, 미래를 알고, 오직 하나님만이 인류의 운명을 결정할 수 있다. 네가 이 사실을 받아들일 수 있든 없든, 이 모든 것은 머지않은 장래에 사람이 직접 목도하게 될 것이다. 이 역시 하나님이 곧 이룩할 사실이다. 인류는 하나님이 보는 가운데서 살고 또 하나님이 보는 가운데서 죽는다. 인류는 하나님의 경영을 위해 살고 또 하나님의 경영을 위해 두 눈을 감는다. 이렇게 끊임없이 순환하며 왔다가 가고 갔다가 또 온다. 이 모든 것은 다 하나님의 주재와 안배이다. 하나님의 경영은 멈추지 않고 계속 앞으로 나아간다. 하나님은 인류에게 그의 존재를 알게 하고, 그의 주재를 믿게 하며, 그의 행사를 보게 하고, 또 그의 나라로 돌아오게 할 것이다. 이것이 바로 하나님의 계획이고, 수천 년 동안 경영해 온 사역이다.
