2018 F3-L running about 667 Newtons or 150 pounds. I had 23Hz with the App on my iPhone, however it was cool 50 degrees F with the rear tire on the ground. Thank you for your video, Regards.
Update on the Gates Carbon drive app: It does work now with my new I-phone and yes, you can turn off the startup video by going into settings and turning it off on startup! I took three readings this morning to test it. I got the same reading three times and it also gives you the average of the three. What people are doing wrong is they are trying to pluck the belt with their hand or fingers and that does not work! Use the handle of a screw driver or a small hammer and "TAP" the belt lightly to make it twang like a guitar string. Wheel off the ground, spoke turned to the rear and test all three spokes then average the three readings.
It worked for us. Had the dealer do the front pully check and they overtightened and slightly misaligned the belt. First time wife had ever complained about a vibration. got the app for my iphone and set it at 33hz avg. Pretty slick, thank you.
Hi Dave I appreciate your videos I have the same bike same color I downloaded the Gates app very easy to use what is the frequency range for your bike? Thanks well done!!
Excellent video and very helpful. Thank you for sharing. My 2022 F3T was extremely tight and on the left edge of the driven pulley , disappointing to say the least. The owners manual is lacking meaningful tech information and according to the dealer no shop manual is available from BRP. Thank goodness for your videos.
I got a new 2023 F3-s and I noticed that after driving it that the belt was tight against the right side flange in the rear. I jacked up the rear and adjusted the right side adjuster so that the belt was about 3 mm from the flange when spinning the wheel, spinning the wheel by hand both forwards and backwards. I tightened the axle nut to about 120 lb-ft and re-checked. still 3mm. After tightening the nut to 166 lb-ft the belt went back to rubbing on the right side of the flange when turning the wheel. Loosened the nut and adjusted it so the belt was further to the left. As soon as I tongued it to 166 it went back to the right side. What am I doing wrong?
I also have the same issue. Every time I torque the axle to the correct setting, belt goes back to original position and the right side belt adjuster becomes loose. It's like the axle is being pulled backwards slightly when torquing the nut. Very frustrating.
after checking 2 separate big dealers in my area they don't even measure tension. Not happy as i have red dust on my front pulley at 10k miles. I'm sure my tension was set too high when i had the rear tire replaced. This is super frustrating to hear no one seems to know how to do this properly at a dealer. I will take care of it myself going fwd. Thanks for the vid..
I have a 2017 RT Limited SE6 and manual says my belt tension is also 1050N +/- 150N. I was able to screen capture your figures on paper you held up to camera so I could read them. I realize you misspoke a couple of times during recording. I have Apple phone and there is a Carbon Drive App. I appreciate the information you shared on this video. My question is after two years since upload are you still successfully using this app to maintain/check/adjust your belt tension? And how often do you check belt tension? Thank You
Dave, The app worked well and after two years of checking the belt tension it never changed enough to readjust. I traded in my 2018 and I now have a 2021. I also had to get a new phone this year and I changed over to Apple. The android phone worked much better with this app. For some reason I can't get a good reading with my I-phone, it never gives me the same reading. (not even close to one another)
comment faire si la courroie est mal placée sur la poulie avant ....elle est collee a l exterieur gauche ..faut il aligner le moteur ..et comment faire..merci
The only problem I see with this is there is not enough data to use this method since their isn't a direct way to convert belt tension measured in Hertz (Hz) to Newtons (N), you need to use a formula that not only take in the tension based on the measured frequency, but also the belt's mass and the length of the belt span. Considering the poster indicated even a time of posting they had 3 different belts you need to know the specs of your belt as a basis for this formula.
That seems to work the best! Moving the right adjuster affects the belt tension the least since it is farthest away from the belt sprocket. Move them both in unison to adjust belt tension.
Always with the tire off the ground, bottom of the belt and take the reading midway between the front pully and the rear pully. Use the three spoke method which means turn the rear tire until one of the spokes is horizontal and toward the rear of the Spyder, take a reading and repeat for the other two spokes. There usually is small differences spoke to spoke. Use the average of the three readings.
You can only use the HZ readout as a reference point as there are no settings for the Spyder belt in the Caron Drive App. Once you take a good reading with the belt at proper tension, belt has to be at room temp and the rear wheel off the ground, then from that point you can always get your belt back to the proper tension.
That’s exactly what I’m looking for. I have a new RT Limited with about 1400 miles on her and she’s at 27-28 Hz right now. Sounds like I need to tighten the belt a bit. I really appreciate what you’ve done. If you’re ever in the Northeast let me know and I’ll set you up with some great rides.
Dead on, thank you sir! Frequency is by far the best way to measure belt tension.
Now I have to figure out which belt I have

Can you post your conversion chart somewhere? Trying to set the proper tension on an F3 and I can’t read it in the video. Thanks

Thanks for the great info. Trying to align my 2019 F3L. How do I convert hertz to Newtons if I use the Gates Carbon Drive app?
Are you still riding Sir Costalot?

Another question, if I want to realign the belt, I only use the right side adjuster? And to make the belt tight or lose I use both adjusters. Thanks

Do you check your tension with the wheel on or off the ground, and either top or bottom of the belt, thanks

Ozarks Spyder Rides thankyou for your quick response, that cleared it up nicely, thankyou
What settings does one use when calibrating the Gates Carbon Drive?

Thanks Dave. My follow up question would be what Hz settings (lower, upper and ideal) that you set your Spyder at?
@@RobertofNH 32 HZ is about 890 Newtons! So I keep mine between 32 to 34 HZ for my 2018 RT.

Great video, very informative. One question, when you say tap it forward, what am I tapping on? Hit the tire forward? Thanks
