- PART 55 of this series, well at least my car now has an official name!
My biggest challenge yet! Can I FIX a 1988 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit with too many faults to list, there is more wrong with it than right. Will I end up crying into my Connolly leather seats or will this beast live on.
This is the cheapest Rolls Royce in the UK so I wasn't expecting much, hopefully bit by bit with sheer determination and zero skill I will attempt to fix each fault one by one.
This is PART 55 of this series. Every part will be filmed, and I hope to discover the craftmanship that has gone into this 34 year old moving piece of art.

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince. - Хобби
The paint code is just the start Vince, there will be several shades for that exact paint code and you will have to match with swatches to the existing paint on the car if you want a good match.
This is what auto body techs have to do when they have to match existing paint and even then it is very hard to get an exact match so they end up spraying several panels to "lose" the difference over a larger area which fools the eye.
Also like you say humans mix the paint and there is always an amount of error between batches, paint is weighed when mixing, they following their mixing scheme which tells them how much of each colour to add by weight to achieve the colour of the paint code.
Add to this that the spray gun pressure, how much base coat is applied vs how much primer is showing through, ambient temp and application technique can all effect the colour.
So unfortunately just having the paint code in not enough to ensure a match, although the paint you just purchased does look completely different. I avoid eBay for paint and use a local paint shop supplier with a mixing scheme to ensure I am getting the product I want.
Looks like you are only putting a mist coat down when you are spraying, the panel needs to look wetter than it did so all the spray "knits" together on the surface of the panel. This will significantly reduce the orange peel but does increase the risk of runs but you can nib them out with wet and dry but for spraying outside against the elements you did a great job Vince.
The nozzle of the can wants to be a stretched hand span away from the panel, so if you stretch all your fingers and you thumb out the distance between the tip of your thumb and the tip of your little finger is how far the nozzle should be from the panel as a rough rule of thumb.
When wet sanding the orange peel out of the lacquer the trick is to stop sanding just before the orange peel disappears, then when you compound the panel it will remove further lacquer as it is an abrasive and will remove that last bit of orange peel at the same time leaving you with as much lacquer on the panel as possible.
Yeah p4000 was not worth it, you could have stopped at p3000 and then compounded.
Try to avoid starting and stopping the engine, this will kill your battery very quickly if you are not charging it with a charger.
Starting the engine needs an enormous amount of power and for the alternator to recharge that battery the engine will need to run for at least 40 mins.
So if you switch the engine off after 5 mins the alternator has not put the energy required to start the engine back into the battery. If you keep doing this the battery will never recover and you will be back to hard/no starting.
Wow, what a comprehensive help APSuk2. It's very kind of you to help Vince out this way, without critising, you have given Vince valuable information on spray painting cars. It's wonderful to see people like you help him out, so well. I for one thank you, for this valuable knowledge and help......
I work with printing ink and yeah there are lots of colors that are incredibly hard to get an exact match when using different batches. Grey is hard but green is worse. Green being made of blue and yellow instead of a real green pigment mean it can easily swing off shade. That and the human eye evolved to see shades of green better than any other colors.
No longer is Adam relegated to the Spam section. It has only taken 50 episodes and numerous Pinned comments for RUclips to realise the importance of your comments. As always Adam, thank you!!!! Guess what, I'm going to PIN this comment again 😂
@@Mymatevince 😁Hope it all helps Vince, just about to watch the video you just posted on the Rolls 👍
I know Vince will surely be happy when it's finally completed, but this is hands down my fav series (i dont even care about cars except for driving them) just love watching you learn what you need as you do it, great inspiration for just getting out and giving it a go
I agree totally. Thank you for your positive comments. It's so easy to give negative critiques it's just wonderful to see yours and others making such positive comments.........
Man this is coming along buddy. You've done wonders! Well done 👏
Nice one Phil, thank you!!!
Don't give up . The series has been amazing .
Too true mate too true.....
'water that to keep it fresh' 😂
Unreal. You're a beast. I'm impressed you pushed on through the weather and paint issue. Those closing shots where jaw dropping. Worth the agony Vince, it's great to see all the tweaks and alignments working together, and I do believe I see a pretty nice reflection on that hood!
The burden 😂 love your positive attitude 😂😂😂.....looking good Vince
😂😂
I agree Vinces' positive outlook has made these videos great.......
Rat mobile is very fitting, also because you repainted it using rattle cans.
And in that case, don't have it professionally resprayed. It's just so fitting the way it is.
Not many people have a rat rod Roller.
I am sure during his repairs he used at least one 'rat'chet too :)
Excellent job Vince, you've kicked ars with this build series.l tip my hat to you thanks for the show 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for sharing Vince
Love The Progress On The Car, Keep It Up Vince 🎉
Just rewatched all the previous rolls Royce videos again so chuffed to see this.
You should get one of those cheap gazeebos from Argos to cover where you are spraying.
Such a lot of work acheived in just one day , well done Vince .
Pure commitment!!
Rats will eat through your electrics in no time. Car starting to look great :D
We need a trip as a closing video!!! It would be great to see the beast running!
I have enjoyed this series so much :) Brilliant job Vince
Yay! It's nearly done! I had a huge grin on my face through all that one - what a lot of work!!!
Thank you Chris, it finally feels like it is coming together!!! It is nearly 2 years end of May since I started, the time has gone soooo quickly.
Some youtubers get tired of projects or leave us on cliff hangers. I am so happy we have made it to part 55 and soon 56. I have enjoyed this journey. Congrats on all the hardwork Vince!
The amout of love and care you have given this car is inspiring, I wouldn't be surprised if you keep it forever now I know I would
I honestly think people would pay You to paint and polish their cars.
It's clear You have a skill Vince.
You've done great work 👍🏻
Vince you are a gem when it comes to patience and perseverance and especially on the very repetitive on the polishing and sanding, you are great at what you do, and always wanting to learn. If only the youngsters today would put the efforts of learning and working the hours this would be a great nation. Well done mate
@Mymatevince Well done using the rattle cans. You will always go through on an edge, the paint is thinner, stay away from edges with a machine, and also by hand. When you do the cutting by hand, try using a block wherever possible or you might 'finger fk' it as we used to say. Pity cellulose was removed from general sale as that paint is far more forgiving and easier to work with than the harder paints of today, plus the shine was all the way through a cellulose. But all in all you are doing a grand job, and your attention to the shuts is nice to see. You would have to go at it hard to go through a flat panel, but an edge will go through very easily.
You are so resilient. It is awe inspiring. Anyone growing up should watch your videos - they might learn a thing or two. Keep up the good work, Roger.
Love this series. Lots of hard work and ‘love’ has gone into restoring this Rolls. I can’t imagine seeing a car like this in a junk yard. You have saved this beauty. Keep up the awesome work. Love all your videos. Best wishes from the USA!!
The rat mobile sounds good. But then again, ROLLS RAT kind of has a nice ring to it as well…..😁
Great work, paint looks shiny and uniform all the way. Nicely adjusted boot lid as well, panel gaps look perfect :)
Good on you for this positive critique of Vinces work......well done.
@@davidsmith-ih2kk Thanks, love to watch MMV repair videos, have learned a lot from his videos 🙂 By commenting, trying to do my little part to help algorithm notice that these videos are well liked and engaging. Always full watch with normal speed for max watch time.
"Two Tone" is very posh and it's perfect time to "wet sand", yes? When life gives you lemons. You taught us that Vince
I was always told when it comes to finishing take care of the flats and the edges will take care of themselves .. true dat 😂😂 peace
Rain drops keep falling on my Rolls ( head) lol, it’s an old song if any of you remember. Vince in future it’s best to pick little bits of debris off wet base/top coat with fine point tweezers. They will cause less to rectify afterwards. Great job so far mate I’m telling you.
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turning red cryings, not for me....
@@davidsmith-ih2kk indeed
For a rattle can, the paint looks great. Dont think it should go to a paint shop. Tape needs to come off a few hours after painting at most, but you probably knew that.
Wow, it idles so smooth there for a second I couldn't tell the engine was on. :D Loving the way this is coming together. :)
This has been a massive learning experience for you . What a performance of restoration . It's been so enjoying to watch.
She's looking fantastic - Welcome to my world with the weather this year.. (Phil)
That's the predictable thing about the British weather,
...it's totally unpredictable!
Great video Vince keep up the good work 👍🇬🇧🙂
I'm really surprised you could do this outside, well done. That handle for can spraying looks great!
Nothing beats the control of a paint spray gun. I painted my electric tricycle Honda gray metallic very good results.
So pleased to see the car again. It is looking great, I cannot wait for the next car video.
For rattle can and an old car that was close to being scrapped it looks great.
I see your paint sweeps have really come along. It's all in the wrist!
If you keep going like that, the car will look great.
Maybe hire or buy a gazebo?
its looking really nice now Vince doing a fantastic job
I was very sceptical about the rattle can paint job but hats off to you, you have made the old girl shine again, I have really enjoyed this series and don't want it to end, I like your tea break fixed but love big projects more 👍
I had my reservations when this project started, most would have failed by now, the finish line is in sight, I'm confident that this will be road legal soon.
Its really looking nice now, love this series..
Can't wait for a road trip. Excellent job.
Maybe you could do a "Geoff Buys Cars" and film from the car when the weather doesnt play ball.
Thanks Malc!
I really wasn't one for joining fan clubs when I was a kid. But I was actually a fellow member of the Roland Rat Fan club! Really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work!
Yeah I think you're spot on with the metallic thing. That other paint looked so flat in comparison. Glad you managed to get more of that original stuff! A lesson to be learned I suppose! Never switch brands/suppliers halfway through a job!
The car looks great, considering where it came from, you've done a really really good job with the paintwork
I had a rat get into my car years ago, it built a nest inside the interior fan and air duct ! It took a bit to get rid of it.
Sound job Vince’s can’t wait till next video 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼😎
Wow, you have come such a long way, lovely to see the car on its final steps before completion.
Looks amazing! You are a tease on this one. no doubt loads of work to get to this point. Excellent amazing, fantastic job. 🙂
We live in Brisbane, Australia and both my parents and sister who live in a semi-rural part of the city have had rats take up residence in the engine bay of their cars. It’s much worse in the winter (for what it is here) as the rats like the residual warmth from the engine. Thousands of dollars in auto-electrical rewiring spent over many years. Dad now has rat baits permanently installed in the engine bay of his vehicles - problem solved! 🐀
The Rolls is looking amazing Vince… all that hard work, effort and perseverance has definitely paid off!
I absolutely love this. I check almost everyday for updates. You have done an amazing job. I hope you bring it to some shows once its mot'd and on the road
My absolute favourite thing you've done. Please keep fiddling with this car for ever
With regards to the colour match. Usually there are several variations of any given colour. Different suppliers can sometimes give a different variant by default. The best option is to get paint mixed by someone who can actually see the car in the metal and confirm the correct variant to use.
She's looking amazing ❤
Looks great!
Wow, that car is looking very smart indeed. Well done!!
Lookin pretty good man especially for your first go at it.
I have done many with spray cans and it can overwhelm you.
Now.. Stop Waffling (I know that word from someplace else.. hmm...) !
See ya on the next one. 😁
Yay!! more RR content.
looks really nice now it’s been hard work
Love this series of videos, keep up the good work Vince!
The Rolls is looking great, Vince. The teaser with the pin striping is the “trying to fix” equivalent of a cliffhanger but it's nice to know episode 56 will be coming soon. It's so close to being done now, but I will miss these videos when it's finished.
Dear Mr. Vince.
👍👌👏 Oh WOW, simply fantastic! The spray can paint job is looking absolutely great and of course definitely way better than anything that was on the car when you bought it. The steady slow swing with how you applied the paint shows, that you have become an experienced spray painter. The result of all the effort you put in speaks for itself (or let's better say shines for itself). I'm very impressed. Also with the little plastic device to click on the spray can. Until now I thought that something like this is only a toy.
2) Bad luck with the rats. Hope you somehow got rid of them and nothing was damaged/chewed up. Rodent poop and especially rodent urin is very aggressive to any metal and paint.
3) Rolent Royce!? Rodents Royce!? 😁 ;-)
As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health in particular.
Post Scriptum: I'm happy to see that you went with the decal stripes. Otherwise it would have cost way too much time.
It still amazes me with how much work you have completed on that little outside parking pad tucked next to the fence. I would have gone mad by now, though the first "driving" video will be worth it.
Wow after all your hard work, this spray job even though not a profession and a rattle can, it’s looking so much better, you must be happy with your efforts. And would look great on anyone’s drive now.
It requires a good amount of experience to deal with painting a car. But you did good Vince.
My wife was in the Roland Rat fan club, and still has her stationery set that she thinks came from the Fan Club
Well done Vince massive Kudos for your perserverance she's looking good
Vince. not bad rattle can respray, don't overwork it leave for better weather as you may get bloom. Lift all tape !.
The G series registration which match UK call signs and Aircraft tail numbers are available from DVLA
GW02 RAT = £250 G3 RAT = £ 1200 GB03 RAT £499
Think about LPG conversion works a treat on my V8
White dog poo = raw food and bones were the staple diet 70's not tined food.
1:43 ha one day tech. Could be perfect 😂
Vince get some 2x 2 and some polythene sheet and make a plastic garage then you won't get spots of rain or dust on your spray job .
Damn rats!!! I live in Montreal, Canada and had just returned from a three week family visit to Greece. I started the car and after about 5 minutes I started smelling burning toast. I thought I was having a stroke but when I popped the hood i found bits of food neatly laid out on the engine cover. I also thought I had an empty gas tank but it turned out that the rat had built its nest in the space between the trunk floor and the top of the gas tank and had chewed the wire for the gas level sensor. It cost $1200 to fix the damage and two years later I sometimes think that I can still smell that rat.
Well done as always.
I recon you may get less 'burn through' and an even better shine of you leave the paint for longer to properly dry and harden.
F24 RAT is available :) would fit the age of the car nicely and it’s one of the cheapest ones :) nice work Vince, it’s some dedication to cover such large areas of pain with the cans outside!
Rats definitely live and nest in cars (20 years pest control experience) and can do massive damage, we have people prop the hood up so they don't feel comfortable to nest as they are susceptible to airiel predators
Looks so good. You've done a great job.
Thank you!
Getting this car through the MOT is next for sure. We are all on tenterhooks for that.
But then we need to see Vince Lording it around the UK in his magnificent Rolls Royce. Selling it at a loss or even just flipping it for profit is a total cop out.
Put a couple of layers of masking tape along the edges .Wil help to keep you from burning through
A thing that you have to consider ! A full Oil service to the Engine !!Rolls - Royce motors work always without complaines But fräsch oil make dem even Better
I haven’t watch much of the rolls Royce series but it blows my mind that you can repaint it with spray cans and outside.
I'm not in to cars what so ever but I ruddy love this series. You have done amazing work on this car
Great work
Vince I was about to say the Rolls was looking really great. In Western Australia, many Auto Shops mix up car paint according to the code on the car, and they have all these codes computerised to tell them what car it is and the colour. But more importantly, they put it into spray cans at the shop and seal and pressurise it. Good for most popular cars. I think you have done a beautiful restoration on this car, Vince. Don't listen to the nay sayers. The whole point of this restoration was to do it yourself, and I just love what you have done to it. It's a really lovely job, Vince. Thank you for all these wonderful videos, and a big thanks to Dad for his help and for letting you use his place to fix it. I really do think it was a wonderful idea to fix and repair this car. Good on you Vince, good on you.
Certain clear coats cans have metallic in the clear paints too bud
It looks fantastic for a DIY ratle can paint job. I've found F24 RAT for £599 which would be suitable for the Rolls. I've also found B21 RAT and B22 RAT for £919 each. I'm looking forward to the next instalment.
Any further issues get a vinyl roof put on it. Many Rolls Royce's have vinyl roofs. Actually look pretty good they suit them.
Really nice looking and sounding car!!!
😆White dog poo! During Covid I was walking in the local woods and found white dog poo. I took a photo. The two people keeping distance behind me were also as excited as I was at this rare blast from the past. They took photos too. There used to be a UK website white dog poo map you could comment on but sadly it's no more.
Great job vince, it definitely looks alot better than it did, its always going to be a struggle to get it perfect without a booth and the proper spray equipment but its definitely an improvement so its a win anyway! 👍🏼
We need to start a Go Fund Me for Vince to get that car a professional paint job.
quick question did you rub down the base coat before clear coating it?? , when you was close and looking at the paint it looks like you didnt , if you do it makes it more smoother finish and mirror like . on a seperate note ,rats live any where and ever where it is dryish and out of the wind etc this includes cars , i would get rid of it quick as they love the taste of the plastic coating on wires .on another side note the white you was seeing while sanding it back is the clear coat residue .
The Rat Mobile..🤣 I'm so excited for more.
What I usually do on my project car to reduce orange peel on the clear coat is to heat it up in some boiling water from the kettle for afew minutes before painting it on, it helps the consistency of the paint and gets a smoother looking finish. Might be worth giving that a go?
I've had problems with that paint supplier to.
great video , looking forward to the next one for sure. leaving us on a cliffhanger.
go on vince ! I been following you for years - you are an inspiration son ! :D
