Just last month rescued a 740 survivor wagon from a local boneyard...only real issue was the intank mounted fuel pump had said goodbye, now ive driven the car nearly every day...of course she's not the first. I bought that one - a 1990 744GLE as a 7 year old, and never sold her ❤. Love these old cars, reliability that you cant buy any more.
We owned a 88 740, still love them. You wrench like a pro. I would love to wrench the way you do but doesn’t have a place to wrench. Rather expensive here in The Netherlands. Keep up the good work!
To avoid cross threading the spark plugs - particularly the rear, nearest the bulk head, (which is hard to get at) I normally put copper grease on the plug threads before inserting the other end of the plug - including the insulator, into a small length ( 3 inch) of garden hose - this makes it easier to manipulate the spark plug threads to get the correct alignment (by feel) before screwing in the spark plug until it is 'finger tight' before applying a plug spanner/socket to nip it up fully.
Great video. Good to see more Volvo 740. Things like press and lifts are so helpful, but hard to justify as a home mechanic. That’s why I end up paying a professional on many similar jobs. So glad we we don’t have rust like that here.

Simply but clever made car, pleasure to see how easy it maintain. I owned for 4 years V70 first gen with B5254T which is base very close to 740/850 and his underhood with this engine more complex for a “relaxed” service :D But i have only pleasant memories of this car.

Over the course of the past 8 years I have pretty much performed all of the jobs - and much more - on my Canadian assembled '90 740 GLA that you just did in this 35 minute video. Even though mine has 445K kilometers on it it still drives and looks like new and I can confidently drive it knowing that it will get me there and back. (The back part is especially important! Lol) I haven't winter driven it much in the past 15 years, so I don't have quite the amount of corrosion underneath the car that you appear to have which helps when performing jobs in that area. But then again you have a garage and a hoist and I don't! Lol Keep up the good work! :)
I guess there weren't any Bosch Super4s available for spark plug replacement. Nine years ago I came across your website with all the Micra tuning bits and I remember you praising them. Since then I try to get them whenever possible
Can't tell you for sure, but i think the head has been ported. I have a 230gk (so, a 530 head, like the one the F has, IIRC), and i had my head rebuilt when the gasket was being replaced, so my mechanic showed me that the head has these intrusions around the port circumference, which he ground off. I can't tell if that made any difference, since the car already had the VX3 camshaft, and it runs a Lada ECU for around 250 hp on a td04-19 at 0,5 bar.
Jag har också "använt" Professional Parts reservdelar. Det är verkligen si och så med både passform och kvalite. Köpte ett Fördelarlock, Fördelararm och tändningsablar. Fördelarlocket var för stort och kablarna var lite för långa men passformen mot stiftena var inte den bästa. Men fördelararmen passade fint. Men annars en bra video gör mig sugen att köpa en 740 igen.
Ja, varierande kvalité. Det börjar däremot bli rätt svårt att få tag i reservdelar till dessa klassiker. Proparts Swe tillhandahåller rätt mycket reservdelar som är svåra att få tag i på annat håll.
Learned how to drive in a 1985 740 GL. Or maybe I should say drive well enough to pass the driving test 🙂 Since then I have owned two 740 GL, one manual transmission and one automatic. Great cars. Maybe the best Volvo through times if it wouldn't be for the mediocre corrosion resistance. In that sense I would say my 2002 V70 has been much better.

Which carmaker of that time could do better than Volvo in such bad conditions of driving, winter after winter? How long to take off the PCV? Thanks you very much for sharing!
Thank you so much for commenting! 😊 It took me a couple of hours for sure, maybe 5-6 hours with filming, cleaning and replacing a couple of vacuum hoses and most time consuming -struggling with the stuck thermostat housing. If you just want to replace pcv box as quickly as possible and you dont run into any problems you could probably do it in around 1 hour. 👍

Hade ärvt bilen och nu stod den bara och kostade parkering ganska centralt i uppsala. Så ägaren var bara glad att bli av med bilen! 😁
Engine mounts can make a massive difference to the feel and drive of a car.. my Mk1 Golf was like a new car after I replaced mine. My vote is a custom exhaust for the Volvo;-)

If you just want to lower it then cut springs or lowering springs might be the way to go. But if you're looking for good handling you should get coilovers. 👍

It would look really good with GLE chrome doorhandles and also the GLE chromelists on the doors! Gives a fresh look.

Bought a 89 740 yesterday and the owner said the inline fuel pump isn't getting power, what y'all think it could be? Is it just bad wiring or what
Could be the relay being bad. Very common but an easy thing to fix. It’s in front of the shifter.
