  • Enjoy this front row seat at the 2022 Philadelphia 4th of July parade! For the first time in 2 years the parade is back! It's about 1/2 the size as normal due to pandemic bounce back. Many of the old time participants were just not present this year. NO worries. Just you wait until the summer of 2023! Tonight, I'll enjoy a massive fireworks display in the skies over the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Last night the Philadelphia Pops Orchestra gave a delightful concert in front of Independence Hall while we kicked back on blankets sampling wine and cheese. Almost all of the museums have been free for the past several days and it's good to see the city coming back to life! Thank YOU for joining me. Now drum roll please...........

Scott, I used to live in upstate New York and last year we went to Harriet Tubman’s grave in auburn , New York . I discovered that people left mementos there and I left a ring I loved. It wasn’t great in value but it meant a lot to me. I will be in Rochester, New York and Frederick Douglas is buried there and maybe Susan B Anthony. When I lived in upstate New York as a high schooler, I was never taught this history. It angers me, but a lot angers me lately. And so I share this for Americans who might want to pay tribute to people who fought so hard for values I believe in. God bless America and God please help this country I love.

  • @alanatolstad4824

Unfortunately I had to skip through the parade. I used to be in the band, and for 20-25 years I get so choked up with tears & can hardly breath when the bands go by that I can't even watch the parades on TV, let alone our Annual Flower Festival Parade. I sometimes have trouble with the little parade for the Los Alamos Old Town Days when the little elementary kids go by wearing their straw hats, red bandanas, & cardboard horses. Uff da. ---Because my trip to Philly was primarily to see the Mutter Museum (and Antique Row, that turned out to be brick houses!) I never knew what all else I was likely to see. Being on foot, I missed a lot of scenic wonders. I surprisingly had no interest in seeing the Liberty Bell, but did return to see Franklin's grave (I got there too late in the day to go inside). The Constitutution Museum was a hit for me. Don't know where that excavation site was, but I wish I'd known about that, I would have stopped.

Thanks so much for this video Scott. Every time you do one of these videos I end up loving Philly more and more. I'm so sorry about the shooter - but that's certainly nothing to do with Philadelphia (and is sadly now a part of our culture that has become too ordinary!) For years I've been catching the Amtrak from DC to New York and every time we pass through Philadelphia I swear I'm going to get off one day and see the place properly. I just celebrated (?!) my 72nd birthday and I guess I better go sooner than later. I'm thinking this fall, when things start to cool off a bit. Maybe just a day walking around and enjoying the places you picked out on this video. It would be a lovely day trip! Or maybe I'll win the lottery and get a room in that gorgeous big hotel and see a little more of the place. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope!
Edit to add: One question about the parade - were the Shriners there? They were always my favorite in the parades I'd see when I was little. Maybe you just missed filming them?

    • @oldcuriosityshop265

Come on Mamie I'll meet you at Wanamakers and buy you a cheesesteak! Philly in autumn in lovely! Oh yes the Shriners are often in the parades but not this year. Because of pandemic bounce back, many usual participants were not present this year. So much planning is required to pull these events off and there wasn't certainty that there would be a parade this year. So it was a little thin. Just wait till next year!!!!!!!!!
