I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN PHILLY, GERMANTOWN, WE USE TO WATCH THE MUMMERS EVERY NEW YEARS DAY AND NOW I GET THE CHANCE TO WATCH THE MUMMERS ALMOST EVERY MORNING ON UTUBE. IT TAKES ME BACK TO WHEN I WAS A KID, THE 40S AND 50S, NOW I LIVE IN COLORADO AND MISS MY CONNECTION TO PHILLY, BUT THIS MOVIE REALLY HITS HOME FOR ME, I USE TO DRIVE UP EASTON ROAD FROM PHILLY TO WILLOW GROVE, ONCE A WEEK WHEN I WAS 12 YEARS OLD AND I REMEMBER THE ROUTE VERY WELL. FRALINGER, THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, I LOVE THIS MOVIE.
Channel 17 in Philly streams the parade each and every year on your computer I watch it had relatives there and would go each year when younger always a hit....not this past year but hopefully next.....
fralinger as well as many other string bands in philly are the greatest for upfront in your face entertainment ! nothing is better than knowing you rocked the crowd !!!
From someone who was in a string band for a few years back in the 80's, and did quite a few Christmas, Memorial day, and 4th of July parades, That had to be the fastest paced parade I've ever seen! I never remember walking anywhere close to that fast! Way to keep up the musical quality, with the fast pace, as only Fralinger could do! God, I miss Mummery!
This group is excellent. Fine musicians, fine marchers, fine selections and plenty of the them. "String Band" is clearly a misnomer due to the dominate role of the saxophones. Sill, the overall sound is fun and I love those two string base players towards the rear. Congratulations on your 100th year. Keep up the good work.
The Ferko band has violins. The 100 anniversary video of the Frailinger band has two Ferko violinists (red jackets) step in for one tune. The bass sound could be provided with bass saxophones without string basses, but I believe there are not enough bass sax players and a new bass sax (Selmer) is in the $20K area. There is one or two bass sax player in this band and probably the others as well (I saw one in Ferko too). I believe (but I'm not sure) the "string band" designation came from the preponderance of banjos (and maybe violins?) back when the first bands were formed. Please correct me, if I'm wrong
Love the Mummer Stringer Bands here in Richmond. Plainly remember when Ferko used to participate in our Tobacco Festival Parades in the late 40' & 50'5... keep up the good work!
You might be surprised to know how many Philadelphians will spend tens of thousands of dollars to go to Mardi Gras, but will speak about the Mummers as if they're complete trash. Very, very sad how many Philly natives have no idea what a cultural treasure we have in the Mummers.
@@crabbyoldman8209 ….I was in Drum and Bugle Corps, which is vastly different from this. But, as a musician, you recognize real talent. This looks like a blast and these guys are seriously talented!!!
My dad, brother, uncle & a few of their friends belonged to this band. One of the best bands there's! They eventually stopped wearing the big head dresses, especially high winds would knock them over. Remember hearing a string band on T.V. & on line will muffle the sound a bit. This band won a lot & they competed against two other. Ferko & I think, the other was Polish American!!
Love the music the costumes and the joy it brings to every one. would love to have some thing like this in the UK.. What is the history behind these string bands??
I'm crying 😢too. This brings back the memories from childhood in South Philly. My mother sent us to every parade going down the pike! Sad today's children don't have the love for America inevitably forced into their souls by such as this like I did.
I don't know if anyone will read this, but here goes. My buddy, TJ, wrote a book in which the Mummers are prominently featured. Part 3 is entirely devoted to South Philadelphia and the second part of the parade on 2 Street. The fictitious CONNOLLY'S String Band is based on Franlinger's. Give Bar Stools & Bus Stops a chance. It's fun... It's cheap... Please... And thank you.
I wish you folks would come to Gettysburg......We need some culture... I grew up with the Greater Bucks and Harrowgate Bands... Every Tuesday night at the William Penn fire Company..i'd come in around midnight to spell their bartenders. Great times.
It's a specific local Philadelphia tradition - Mummers - costumed marching string bands. These Mummers bands go back nearly 150 years. They all compete on New Year's Day.
This specifically only happens in and around Philly in the USA. If you visit on New Years Day you'll see Fralinger and the other string bands strut down Broad Street - so if you like it, make sure to check out Philly on New Years. Apparently it's related to the old English and Irish tradition of "mummery".
3:17 -a marching band is approaching. It takes up the whhole street. But she eithier doesn't see it, doesn't care or feels she is important enough to make the band go around her.
Victor Song the song at 6:21 is called Paddelin Madeline home and at 8:15 is call "You've Got to start off each Day with a song" both are two of my favorites to play with the band. Thanks for watching!
The Ferko String Band performed in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade in 1946 and 1948, Fralinger String Band was also featured in the parade a few times back then. I haven't heard of them going up to for any NYC holiday parades in recent history, sadly. Sometimes Mummers string bands will perform in downstate NY and New England - Aqua String Band does St. Patrick's Day in Springfield, MA every year.
no offens, i luv the music& histry. i watch'd the after shows @ nite wit my grand-pa. @ ritner. st in s. philly, drinkg ur brandy. gotta admit ur costumes belong in new york 4 halloween parade. what happen'd?

Please think about coming back before you pass away. Some of Phila. is same. I mean that. Particularly the mummers.
You guys are magnificent and you make everybody so happy thank you
Played for my Grand daughters,, They could not believe I used to sit and watch the parade every year,,,, in the 50's........

That String Band music always brings happiness and smiles. I love it.
God bless you for sharing this. This creates joy every time I view it.
That is tremendous playing and marching ! Thank you gentlemen.
That is some BIG ear pleasing sound !
What a fantastic video !
fralinger as well as many other string bands in philly are the greatest for upfront in your face entertainment ! nothing is better than knowing you rocked the crowd !!!

This isn't fast paced. You haven't seen the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas. They play and march at a fast pace.
I love this music! This band is terrific. It puts a huge smile on my face. It makes people happy.
Perfect lines and uniformity. That’s a group that cares.
LOVE IT! Uplifting, joyful, patriotic -- and great entertainment! What costumes, what musicianship! Keep it going and flowing!
Amazing sound. Such great tunes.
Better in person. It's thrilling!!
One of the many traditions I miss about Philly. If only we had a Mummers String Band out here in Vegas.
or So Cal
Start one!!!, why don't cha? If you don't play yourself, you might think about supporting others who do. Just a thought...
You have the Alt parades....

There used to be more banjos.
Beautiful! Thanks for keeping traditional...and yet so gorgeous are these new costumes.
Love the Mummer Stringer Bands here in Richmond. Plainly remember when Ferko used to participate in our Tobacco Festival Parades in the late 40' & 50'5... keep up the good work!
This is as it should be... Amen!
Nothing better than a marching mass band.... in wild way out dress....love it...
Ladies and gentlemen, the happiest music in the world
Love it! Can’t wait for New Years Day!
Bring the love back to America with the Brass Band ❤
FANTASTIC !!
Love the Captains Mummer's Strutt!!!😅
I wish we had this in New Orleans!!

This proves that the bands need to be on TV annually Hurray
They sure know how to have a GREAT time. Would give anything to be there !!!
What a wonderful joyful Parade ❤️✌🏼

History? You can google all day.
It’s a Philadelphia tradition dating back to the early 1900’s
Nothing beats Fralinger on your freakin' Doorstep!! #Americana :)
I actually started crying from sheer delight 😂

Why no, you're right....you do not have this in the Netherlands. Philadelphia is the one and only to claim the Mummers in the world. Thanks.
awesome music
best band in the land

Fantastic!! What a great organization you have there.
small town America at its best
Beautiful town 😊
Ever since I moved to Florida I miss the Mummers
If God allows me, I would like to go to study there, greetings from Tabasco Mexico
What a great video!
Thanks indeed
OK, marching while playing a string bass... My hat's off to you guys.
Strut ON
Just brilliant. Do you have a cd out please
What are names of the tunes starting at 6:21 and the other 8:15? Can anyone help? BTW: The band fabulous - my favorite of all the mummers.
Victor Song the song at 6:21 is called Paddelin Madeline home and at 8:15 is call "You've Got to start off each Day with a song" both are two of my favorites to play with the band. Thanks for watching!
Great performance bless the USA
FENOMENAL É D+ !!! Show!
These people are great, different than a conventional marching band with their odd costumes and singing with banjo music
Oh yeah
Magnificent!!
why has not a Mummer string band ever been invited to the Rose parade?
Or Macy's?
It's certainly their loss!!!!
String Bands march in the Philadelphia New Years Day parade. Unfortunately, the two parades (Rose Bowl) are on the same day.

Must be a Pennsylvania thing. Stop having fun. 🎶
As I remember the Mummers Parade in 1960s!
Fralinger String Band Alvin the Chipmunk and Twilight the Pony and Him All Gang Creatures Friends Watson Family is Heroes Glenside PA
what song cold ?
I hope the glenside parade is back in 2021
Great👍🏽😀😀😀😀😀
When your smiling
Cheese steak sub Italian water ice soft pretzel and watch the mummers parade down 2 street
Bass violins in a parade? Never seen that before! I hope none of these people have to take a subway home dressed like that!
If they did jrcigaful, everyone from the Philadelphia area would know exactly why they were dressed that way. Especially if it is New Year's Day.
Note to Vladimir Putin: THIS is how you invade a country.

It's a Philly thing. You out of Towner's won't understand
Anyone can understand the beauty of togetherness with this wonderful brass band & is loved all over the world. 😊
This string band needs better security.
A bunch of saxophones sneaked in the back and an accordion made all the way to the front row.
Lovely (bit did not see one mask!!!)
Umm, did you read when this video was uploaded even? This video was uploaded in 2015.
Sius otu
It's the Scottville clown band
Should be played at the White House lawns 😊 hopefully Mr. Donald Trump can arrange when back in the White House 2024 ❤
