    Tip from Canada. Always buy top of the line winter tires. All Weather, All season, AT, do not compare with the winter traction of a well designed winter tire. All wheel drive, front wheel drive, it doesn't matter. The tires are what provide the traction. Good luck out there.

    • @JamesKlafehn
      @JamesKlafehn  3 года назад +2

      True, a dedicated winter tire is always the best option for winter driving. But I wanted an A/T tire that I could use year round in all conditions. These are the highest rated snow tire and they have the 3 peak snow rating. So they are excellent. I plan on doing more tests like this if we ever get more snow.

    I could definitely relate when you started sliding--I've only had 3 new cars, but one was a brand new 2008 4WD 4Runner that I took up to the mountains shortly after I bought it (less than 1000 miles). I saw a mountain road with about 6 inches of snow on it, so I wanted to see the 4Runner's chops--made it up no problem at all, but it was a steep uphill, which meant a steep downhill coming back down. I was within eyesight of the main, 2-lane road and all of a sudden it just started sliding. No possibility of stopping, just slowly veering left to a 3-4 foot ditch that bordered the road and at the last second the tires got traction, and I was able to avoid going off the road. That'll raise the BP and pulse rate, especially in a brand new vehicle!

    If you know how to drive in snow you can pretty much drive anything. I used to own a 2003 dodge neon and when we’d get ice/snow storms I’d still have to drive to work and that thing drove like a champ. I think that all of the talk of this car is better in the snow, or that car is better basically boils down to whomever is at the wheel, as you can take a bad driver and give them a wrangler with snow rated 35’s and they’d find a way to get stuck. The key to driving in the snow is to use the snow to your advantage as it helps to create traction. People typically look for the tracks and try to follow those and what happens is when it’s really cold the tracks become ice rinks, so when you start to slide steer out of the track and into the thicker snow and the tires will gain traction. Awesome video though man (entertaining)...😃✌🏽

      Yes, driver is definitely a component. I live in Michigan so I have 2 decades of snow driving under my belt. More than a few different vehicles to say the least, and there's definitely a difference between vehicles. Pontiac vibe was the worst, Chevy Impala and Toyota 2wd RAV4 about the same, then Ford f150 4x4, and best was Mazda CX-9 AWD

    • @pleco101

      Great advice re: steering into fresh snow.
      I've only ever driven fwd cars with snow tires and generally where I go (non-off road) I'm ok. Yet, any form of offroading, wilderness etc., I'd certainly feel more at ease with awd/4wd.

      @@joe1071 What's your take on the Mazda vs. Toyota awd systems?
      i.e. Rav4 (basic awd version) vs CX-5 (awd).
      I'm not including Forester in the options, because I don't trust Subaru and their various issues.

    • @joe1071
      @joe1071 2 года назад

      @@pleco101 I have not run the Toyota RAV4 awd system, but I’d imagine the rav4 and cx5 systems would be similarly capable in the snow. Tires of course are the only part that touches the ground, so they need to be good as well. The best all season I’ve run is the Michelin defender Ltx ms. Truly a do it all tire that is an excellent match to awd

    I LOVED this video. I do similar exploring in my Forester on Blizzaks. I have to say, you go farther than I often do! One thing I do sometimes is stop, get out and walk the path to see what's coming. Great test of the Firestone Destination A/T2 Tires as well. You may want to find a buddy with a Tacoma or Wrangler. Just in case. AAA and normal tow trucks are not a solution for being stuck on season roads (though you may luck out).

    • @pleco101
      @pleco101 2 года назад

      I never thought of that - yeah, I don't imagine a regular tow truck would even think of coming out on a service road to fetch your vehicle.

    Hello from Canada! Looks like a fun drive. You're closer to Toronto (about 270+ miles ESE.) than I am (300+ miles due North). If there's anything I've learned about winter driving, good winter tires that grip ice are essential for 6 months of the year where I live. Snow is only a problem if it's so thick that you get high centered on the thick stuff. I always feel better off the plowed roads when there's 2 vehicles and a towing line, even with true 4x4.

    I'm interested in getting rid of my 2023 Tesla Model Y dual motor and getting a RAV4 Prime XSE. The Prime has much better total range and no worrying about charging when going to remote areas. There is currently a good deal on leasing a RAV4 Prime with a $6,500 rebate. Then I can choose to purchase after the lease expires. Now I need to decide if to wait until the 2025 model comes out.

    I could be critical about how mild this was. But since you claim this is your 1st time on a "seasonal road" in the winter, I am merely going to say, the biggest mistake you made was not having a buddy to either follow or lead you along. In case something went wrong. Other than K02, being better rated for stoping and acceleration, you have a good runner up tire choice. I would expect that vehicle to perform very well in those conditions. Under different circumstances, I would consider that vehicle for myself.

Unfortunatelly when i purchase my 2020 rav4 xle i didn't know that it doesn't have a block heater and i need to purchase it separately due to the reason that its not on the all weather package. Then the dealer is charging me $270+ tax and + $150 installation. Now im planning to install it my self but i didn't know how and where to buy a cheaper block heater cable. Would you kindly share you idea's if you have any. Thank you in advance and more power to you.

    Dang dude for downhill descents in slippery weather do NOT put the trans in reverse to stop, rather CONTROL Your wheel speed by using low gears! Leave it in 1st or 2nd gear the entire time so it’s using engine rpm to your advantage. Plus use SNOW mode to keep traction working. I about shit when you put it in reverse to slow down rather than using lower fwd gears. Not only once but twice! Lenny in Vestal 🤓
