Love the double rehash of "rockers and boxes" Mike, made the entire subject crystal clear, and the camera work was even nicer in this one cameraman Mike! I love it. A very small application of gasket sealer! It doesn't need to spurt out of the cracks to do its job. I hate scraping GLOBS of sealer off of heads. The oil hardens it and it just makes a mess of things when it's time to clean. I hope folks pay attention to this important technique.

    Thank you for sharing how gravity can be used in the assembly. Gravity is one of the reasons I purchased a magnetic pickup tool years ago. I did find a use for magnetism other then holding sockets and my butter fingers. While working on my shovel I lost one of the Hex bolts for the derby cover. My bad. Fortunately the local hardware store had them. As usual I found the lost bolt after I had made the purchase. What I found interesting is the magnetic tool would barely hold onto the new bolt where it stuck tight to the old bolt. Am guessing made in China of a poor grade alloy was the reason for the discrepancy. Good reason to purchase original equipment if possible and a cheap metallurgical test using a magnet. Thank you again for a Super Video. Stay safe and keep the rubber side down.

    • @timothyputzke1250
      @timothyputzke1250 3 года назад

      It could be, but I have machined a lot of stainless ( mostly 303 or 304 ) for medical use. The weight and finish was different. Unfortunately I no longer have easy access to be able to test the hardness of the steel. Last fall I purchased a 2011 FLHTK. The plan is to take one last road trip, as my wife has never seen mountains. We wouldn't last long on my shovel. Friends and family think were nuts at our advanced age for this bucket list plan. I bought a Clymer manual service manual. It recommends the equivalent of a Champion RA8HC gapped at .040. I have two NGK iridium 1X DCPR7E1X plugs pre-gapped at .031. Would you recommend gapping the NGK's at 0.40? Any advice would be much appreciated.

      Yes, we're old. I hope you and your wife have a wonderful trip. Please write back tell me about it. I ran a pair of those plugs in a 2001 Dyna I had for a short time. I was afraid to regap them and ran them the way they were (.031). That bike really ran with proper jetting and a SE ignition module, pipes and air cleaner. I think (?) the plugs actually added to the performance, but I can't tell you how much.

    Always love your vids Mike. Thanks for passing down the knowledge. My 68FLH components are coming together nicely in large part because of your guidance. Here's a question that I (and others?) might benefit from...in a frame-off rebuild, what order makes the most sense for re-assembly? I'm doing mock-ups now, and maybe if you or one of your other subscribers have time you could share a quick breakdown on the most practical approach to getting her back together. I have a rolling chassis at the moment with a freshly painted frame, trued wheels & hubs, new tires. This weekend I put new seals in the front forks, installed the front fender, wheel, front brakes and cable. Have a fresh wiring harness and I assume that's the next step, but I'm a bit nervous to start that project if there's something else I should be taking care of first. All the parts have been removed/disassembled/cleaned/rebuilt/replaced already and I'm just trying to get a feel for what should come next. Thanks to you or anyone else who wants to share their thoughts. More rebuild videos to come on my channel this spring for anyone who's interested!

    • @peteosinga8845
      @peteosinga8845 3 года назад +1

      If the engine is assembled and the rest disassembled I like to lay the engine over on a blanket and lower the frame onto the engine, it’s lighter that way and I get Bobbi to help and using tape on the frame it goes together nice.

      @pacificmike9501  3 года назад +2

      You know, if you read a Harley service manual.... Let's see. The chassis is together. Read where it says "Stripping Motorcycle to Remove Engine." Seriously, it will make things more easily occur to you. You might look at that, then reassembly. It will clear a lot of things up for you.

    • @MrJoshReinhart
      @MrJoshReinhart 3 года назад

      @@pacificmike9501 Yep, Service Manual Chapter 3A Verses 9 and 10. ;) That makes sense, I was just curious if you or anyone else had "insider tips" that might make reassembly progression more efficient. For example, the manual suggests adding the exhaust after the engine is mounted, but I've seen some wait until more components are bolted on before they try to feed the crossover. Stuff like that. But I also know every bike has its unique quirks...and I've heard a little something-something about "best laid plans." ;) Take it easy and keep the vids coming!

Thanks again for the awesome knowledge

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  10 месяцев назад

      Dual, independent intakes are, of course for dual carburetors. If you are an experienced tuner and need this for some truly go fast reason, I can see it. Otherwise, think about it this way: The engine fires one cylinder at a time and breathes individually through the same carburetor. We're not talking about ignition, we're breathing through the carb. When you decide to experiment, it might be fun to play with, but it becomes all consuming.

      I do it just like the service manual says. If I'm using a specific gasket made by a supplier other than Harley Davidson, I follow their procedure. Hey Mike, I’ve had my heads off of my jugs while I was getting new pistons/rings for the jugs. They haven’t been apart but have been sitting in my closet, what’s a good method of cleaning them out before reinstalling onto the cylinder jugs? Just want to ensure everything is clean as possible. Thanks!

      I don't now how dirty. Any good solvent that doesn't attack aluminum. Are they assembled? Are the rocker arms assembled? Are the valve stems all dry? This stuff should all have lubricant before firing them up.

      @@pacificmike9501 the rockers are still attached to the heads with everything installed, I just pulled the whole head assemblies off of the cylinders. I’ve had them covered in my closet while they have been off. I’ve read washing them with soap and water, drying them and then lubing the inside for reassembly, does that sound about right?

    Question. I am starting to get a small leak on the rear cylinder rocker box. The service manual says you do not have to remove the engine to replace the gasket. I am hoping to just check the torque setting on the rocker box nuts. (15 ft lbs). If this doesn't fix it, then pull the heads, right. I can see where this rabbit hole is going to lead. My other question, what is the brand and type of gasket sealant your using. thanks

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  3 года назад

      I am assuming you have a Shovelhead. Rocker box leaks are common. You'll have to remove the head. It sounds like you haven't had the heads off before, so to make sure the head gaskets match, remove them both. That is called "Ultra Gray." I use it on rocker box gaskets. Any auto parts store should have it.

    Im using James steel with silicone rocker gaskets on my shovelhead. Im wondering if the torque LBS is the same? I assume the sequence stays the same correct?

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  3 года назад

      Sequence is the same. James gives instructions with their head gaskets. The rest are the same as factory Harley.

      I really go for the more modern, more "crushable" gaskets and "ultra grey," which can be found at any auto parts store.

    Hi Mike, I bought some new reproduction Shovelhead heads and need to install rocker box studs. Is there any kind of special adhesive needed to install these? I can install them with my fingers and am concerned about them backing out

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  2 года назад +1

      I'm running a pair of aftermarket Shovel heads. The studs screwed right in and that's all I did. I did torque the nuts according to factory specs and no problem so far. My heads are STD's.

      They are "Different." They are an "interference fit." If you ever try to remove one from a factory Harley Shovelhead with factory rocker box studs, you will find out what I mean. Aftermarket ones just (generally) screw in.

      If you're using stock head gaskets, the service manual gives complete instruction on the tightening order and the exact process for this. If not, the gasket manufacturer gives the final torque number.
