This truly was the greatest adaptation of the book there could ever be. Saw it four times in the West End (five including WEL), miss it so much still, hopefully one day it'll come back to the UK.
the kids are spectacular. violet gets more depth in her backround which makes her bad, veruca's new cuteness makes her character more conflicting which makes her bad, Augustus gets happier and rounder which makes him lovable but also bad, and Mike teavee gets younger and therefore makes him more terrifying and bad
in the new york production, they aren't going to use many child actors besides charlie and mike. Augustus, Veruca, and Violet are all played by 20 year olds.
Actually, it seems to be getting positive reviews from the audience and mixed reviews from the critics. Yeah, it has it flaws, but it still is a really spectacular musical. Definitely one of the bests on my list.
Actually, I happened to listen to the whole song on RUclips and it does have parts where they sing about slicing up, grounding down, and boiling him just like in the book. I love all the Oompa Loompa songs in this show!
36, American, male. Live in NY, see theater regularly. Went to London this week with my 70 year old parents. We saw this and 'Matilda'. I am dumbfounded by the reviews- all three of us preferred this to 'Matilda'. Matilda's fun, some nice moments and decent songs. Doesn't need comparison to 'Charlie' but since everyone has done so, I'll do it in favor of 'Charlie'. Perfect acting, stunning sets, GREAT music (so shut up critcs!) that serve the story. A+ I haven't seen a better show- Ever.
The original? This is an original musical stage adaptation of the book, not the 70's film. There is a stage adaptation of the 70's flick called "Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka," but it isn't very good and was only written for children's groups to put on.
THEY RECORD FOOTAGE OF FULL PERFORMANCES FOR TRAILERS. We have plenty of companies like Netflix and DisneyPlus with enough money to buy the footage. So why this show hasn’t got a video release is baffling to me!
On the first few days, it said on the raido it was getting bad reviews but you have to admit, not letting anyone else do it is a bit stupid. When the school recieved the call saying they can't do it. it was excatly an hour after my sister and her class got the part and half the class were crying. Which would you see: A tiny primary school with 100 pupils in Yorkshire or a West End play in London with special effects and amazing actors?
Why did your sister's school even think they'd be able to get the rights to do it in the first place when it has barely been open 3 months?! There are plenty of plays in the West End which aren't available to amateurs (including schools) - Les Mis, Phantom, Wicked, Lion King, Matilda, Mousetrap, Woman in Black, Ladykillers..... need I go on?
I hope they have different music than shown for Augustus Gloop and stick with the original lyrics from the book. The ones detailing him being slicing up, ground down, and boiled.
Billy Smith They are not puppets seen in the "behind the scenes" Of the musical and it turns out that they are ordinary people but I checked how they float and came out that they are sitting on a crane at all, how will they be so low? ,
...WOW...THAT is how I always saw Wonka looking like actually...you know, whimiscial but intelegent. Gene got the intellegent part down and Depp got the Whimiscal part a bit TOO well...but htis guy seems to know how to mix them.
I adore this musical from the set, the music, the characters, the book and the actors. With that being said - Douglas Hodge is the best Wonka. I've seen this twice (one with Hodge and the other with Alex Jennings) and Jennings just didn't feel like Willy Wonka to me. It's good to see an adaptation that's closer to the book with its look, feel and Wonka's costume. My favourite book and with it being on stage is now my favourite musical. It truly is a wonder that must be believed to be seen.
John Mclellan The new Wonka, Jonathan Slinger is VERY Douglas Hodge with his performance :) Which pleased me alot. They even brought the moustache and beard back for Slinger.
That's good! I'd love to go back and see it again (again) with him. Douglas Hodge is my favourite interpretation of Wonka and feel he's the closest to how Roald Dahl perceived it.
This is the most faithful adaptation I’ve seen, they even got Wonka’s look right!
i think this could be the most most faithful adaptation to the book Roald Dahl would have liked more than the 2 movies
Yeah, their descriptions are accurate
This isnt even close to being faithful lol
Big_Boy_Billy Broadway version is closer to the Willy Wonka movie rather than the book. It is a lot darker too.
@Big_Boy_Billy True. In the book, it says nothing about Augustus devouring a dachshund, either.
In small details, yeah. But 2005 was closest in the demises.
This truly was the greatest adaptation of the book there could ever be. Saw it four times in the West End (five including WEL), miss it so much still, hopefully one day it'll come back to the UK.
I kinda love that they couldn't resist mining the original film for that one magical song!
Pure Imagination?
The purest!
I mean it's a CLASSIC! You can't do any adaptation of this without that song anymore ;)
That wonka has a perfect singing voice!
No offense to Gene Wilder or Johnny Depp, but this is the Wonka I always imagined in my head whenever I read the book.
THANK YOU
Also R.I.P gene wilder
Because this musical went off the book when it came to set and costume
that sharpie facial hair isn't fooling anyone
Blackout that was no Sharpie, that was an actual prosthetic mustache and goatee.
Vicente Hizon I agree with you. That mustache looks real enough to me.
the kids are spectacular. violet gets more depth in her backround which makes her bad, veruca's new cuteness makes her character more conflicting which makes her bad, Augustus gets happier and rounder which makes him lovable but also bad, and Mike teavee gets younger and therefore makes him more terrifying and bad

0:44. i love the part because it is so wonkafying 😂😂 good job hodge
FINALLY!!! I've been waiting for this musical to be on stage!
A musical is always on stage!
It must be believed to be on staaaaaaaaaage🤪😉😂
0:44 is my favorite part!!!
when they sang "Pure Imagination" though... id be interested to see this!
that ending with the glass elevator and starry night/space is really cool
Coming to Broadway next spring. As someone who grew up with the book and the '71 film, I'm so excited. Can't wait to see it!
is there a full hd recording of this beauty? is it perhaps purchasable? or should we make the show must go on team to give it to us? ;)
1:19 My favorite part
1:19*
I never fully saw the musical but this preview was the first I saw and to me the best!
Is nobody going to talk about how the oopmpa loompas can literally define the laws of gravity
The original poster should change the date on the title of this clip. I don't WANT to wait 90 years until 2103 to see this show!
This show is awesome! Everyone who said it was bad probably have not even seen the show and how amazing it is
Actually, I happened to listen to the whole song on RUclips and it does have parts where they sing about slicing up, grounding down, and boiling him just like in the book. I love all the Oompa Loompa songs in this show!

The Great Glass Elevator is impressive and majestic itself😀😀😄😄😄😊🙂🙂🙂🙃☺️☺️☺️😇😉😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃👦🏻🍫🍭🍩🍬🏭🎩
...Please, how can I unsee it and stop my eyes bleeding?
i love charlie and the chocolate factory i cant even stop talking about it that how much i love that movie
I don't think the original actors can be topped. Especially Douglas, Adrianna, and Tia, they were great when they performed.
Doug is the best Wonka I could ever imagine.
Mark Bonetti I know right
The Wonka TARDIS
I love your comment so much. It’s awesome.
I hope this comes to Broadway!

The original? This is an original musical stage adaptation of the book, not the 70's film. There is a stage adaptation of the 70's flick called "Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka," but it isn't very good and was only written for children's groups to put on.
Are there any recordings of this performance? Is love to watch. Ive been listening to the soundtrack on repeat.

PLEASE come to Broadway!! I have never hated being American this much... :P
aggghhh best musical ever (other than les miserables)
while it is good I would have to disagree, not better than say Phantom of the opera, or Cats[sadly not on anymore]
YOU WERE AMAZING MAN
the oompaloompas what happened to them im finna cry 😭
I saw this its amazing
Not knew to us any more, knew to New York!
On the first few days, it said on the raido it was getting bad reviews but you have to admit, not letting anyone else do it is a bit stupid. I enjoyed your video
This is spectacular!
they need to come to Toronto in Canada
I love how the oompa loompaas are on their knees with fake legs
John Miley actually the west end version did a better job with the Oompa Loompas, unlike the Broadway version where there were clearly puppets
Best show ever it's a hit
I've watched it it's the best !!! Xx
I love the cast!
I saw this it was great I loved it
"Do come in!"
* immediately closes door *
The best musical ever

Douglas Hodge read the Original book on audiobook. Lol
Charlie and the chocolate factory and wily wonka and the chocolate factory
where can i find the full video ? also a script for this?
I hope they have different music than shown for Augustus Gloop and stick with the original lyrics from the book. The ones detailing him being slicing up, ground down, and boiled.
Tiny tim in the back of the house
When's it playing I wanna go!!! :D :D
1:05 their dance If you notice in some of the section they float and this dance is against the laws of physics who agrees to let it be
Well, they're actually puppets. That explains why they are seen floating sometimes.
Billy Smith They are not puppets seen in the "behind the scenes"
Of the musical and it turns out that they are ordinary people but I checked how they float and came out that they are sitting on a crane at all, how will they be so low?
,
I don't actually know how they have made this into a musical it just doesn't seem right
Где можно посмотреть полностью?
It looks like they've based it upon a red phone box.
WONKA WHY DID YOU LEAVE THE SHOW FOR? WAAAAAAAAAAA😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
+Vanessa Nicolaica He left to do other things like TV show Penny Dreadful + TV mini series-The Night Manager
What a great musical! Better than Cats!
Can someone get me a link to the full recorded musical, I want ot watch it!
There isn't one 😕
Watched it a month ago ^^
...WOW...THAT is how I always saw Wonka looking like actually...you know, whimiscial but intelegent. Gene got the intellegent part down and Depp got the Whimiscal part a bit TOO well...but htis guy seems to know how to mix them.
Plus this Wonka is charismatic.
It should have the rowing poem willy wonka sang in the 1971version
Weres granpa joe i. The glass elevator
I adore this musical from the set, the music, the characters, the book and the actors. With that being said - Douglas Hodge is the best Wonka. I only saw Jonathan and I felt like he was wonka to me,he had that wonka feel to me and he was what I had envisioned wonka as
Was this on at Drury Lane?
Yes
It's a wonkavator
Doing this at school and I'm going for Veruca Salt, wish me luck. I'm a little rusty on my British accent..... ;D
Good luck I played mike tv I'm sure you will have a great time like I did
