  • In late spring, April and May, young salmon that have grown large enough turn silver and start to migrate downstream to the sea. They are now known as smolts.
On their migration route, they shoal together for protection from predators, and feed voraciously to build up energy reserves for their long journey. Their bodies are changing, getting ready to adapt to salt water.
Once they reach the sea, they will turn north and head for marine feeding grounds in the Norwegian Sea, some even venturing as far as west Greenland, before returning as adults after one, two or three years away.
