- At a graduation ceremony hosted by the National Ministry of Health and UKZN on July 14th, 26 Cuban trained South African doctors graduated with a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Villa Clara (Cuba). The doctors are currently serving internships in South African hospitals in order to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. The SA-Cuba programme was initiated by the South African Department of Health in the mid-1990s, as part of efforts to address major human resources shortages in the country's public health sector within the context of the burden of diseases.
The programme has so far been successful, producing 282 medical doctors currently employed in different health facilities throughout the country. The candidates for the programme are largely drawn from rural, under-serviced areas. Upon completing their training, the doctors are placed in outlying rural areas as part of ensuring healthcare services in such areas. A total of 388 students are still undergoing training in three different medical schools in Cuba.
Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Gwen Ramokgopa delivered the key-note address. The ceremony was officiated by the acting Chancellor of the University of Villa Clara, Professor Juan J. Ceballos. Attending the ceremony were the MEC's for Health in KZN, Eastern Cape and the North West Province; the Ambassador of the Cuban Embassy in South Africa, Ms Ibete Hernandez; Head of the Cuban Medical Collaboration, Dr Alex Carreras; Vice Chancellor of UKZN, Professor Malegapuru Makgopa; and senior management from the Department of Health and the Universities of Villa Clara (Cuba), UKZN, Stellenbosch and Walter Sisulu.
This just makes my heart so proud
