    Panic ensued between the British duo just before the second running of Góis 2 when Martin discovered that his pace note book, containing crucial details of every twist and turn of the stage, had gone astray.
    With no time to spare, Martin ingeniously resorted to using his mobile phone to access a digital copy of the notes. However, the bad luck continued for the pair as their Toyota GR Yaris sustained front-right tyre damage during the stage, costing almost one minute.

    Had the same kind of panic when i lost our timecard at last rally. A gust of wind took it out of the car during refueling, but I saw it caught on a fence about 70 yards out and was able to sprint and get it!

      I wonder what was that, since I couldn't understand any of their conversation. Perhaps Scotty not being able to find the next page and Elfyn just remembering that part of the notes? Perhaps trying to dictate the road so Scotty can find the right page again?

      @@ondraspendlik9759 It was most likely the second. In 2019, at Rally Argentina, on the second pass through the "Copina - El Cóndor" stage (the Power Stage), Carlos del Barrio got lost on the notes in the middle of the stage and spent a couple of minutes trying to recover. Dani Sordo was describing every corner as he was driving as flat-out as possible. He lost only 5 seconds. I guess it was impossible for Dani to remember the notes, as that stage was done in reverse for the first time ever (thus usually it's "El Cóndor - Copina") and Dani was describing most corners after (!) passing through them.

      @@zwjna That makes sense. Thanks for a nice bit of info. These guys are on another level. It shows they can be fast even without the pacenotes (and while dictating them!).
      I guess nowadays, the notes are what gives you the edge, what allows you to go insanely quickly. I feel like in the past, they were there more to prevent you from crashing. I think that could explain why "easy right" or "medium left" was replaced with "5 right over crest, tightens, trim".
      Sure, some drivers had more complex pacenotes in the past, but nowadays, they seem generally much more specific and describe the route in way more detail.
      Some people undervalue today's drivers, because they have an easier job with sequential gearboxes, but seems like hardly anyone notices they need to take in and process way more information and even memorize parts of stages to be competitive against their peers! Massive respect to rally crews, past and present!

      @@ondraspendlik9759 Yes I believe the co driver said something like ' I'll have to pick you up at the hairpin' which would indicate to me he sort of lost the lyrics to the song and needed to pick the song back up at the chorus. Pretty sure it was just Elfyn letting him know where he was in the song if the analogy makes sense.

    Here's a crazy idea straight out of the future, totally Black Mirror.
    Imagine the pace notes uploaded to the helmet, then displayed on the co-driver's screen?!

    • @ondraspendlik9759
      @ondraspendlik9759 14 дней назад +4

      Interesting idea, but it's just another technology to make the helmet heavier (not something you want in a crash) and more expensive (they already cost a fortune). Plus, they still need something to write the pace notes down on/into (can't rely on voice recognition writing it for you), and then a button to switch between pages. And if something fails, you're screwed. I'd say pace note books are here to stay, it's simple to write and rewrite, quick, efficient.
