Kyle, normal you know your vehicles, but on the MDX your prep was lacking. I’ve had a 2012 MDX for 10 years now. SHAWD is arguably the best on the market and does not use the brakes.
The MDX is a jack of all trades and master of none type of vehicle. Not the best in any one area; but, one of the best overall if you need to check a lot of boxes. Taking the +$62,000 MDX rock climbing is like going hiking in a business suit. You can do it; but, not the best tool for the job.
I have a 2004 mdx. I take it on rough dirt roads like these often while camping. Never had a problem with it and it only cost me $5,000 with less than 100k. Used 4runners cost way more like 2x or 3x because they are in demand for off roading. I told down the back seats and put my air mattress in and don't even have to set up a tent.
I'm on my 4th acura and I can tell you this guy don't know shit about acura , most people that really know these cars would have gotten up that hill no problem...and yes I will be getting a 5th one..😉
Try changing the driver, that should help. That said this vehicle has no place on that offroad trail. Keep it on snowy/icy paved roads where it was designed to be.
I don't think mdx fail, i think driver Failed. You can't call it fail one try bro! how many real off road vehicles get stuck and try back and forth and different variant! sorry but big Fail on you.. and Big Dislike if that matters!! ;)
@@hondafreak8613 idk but if you said momentum is everything when offroading. Then you totally dont understand what is offroading. This trail is children playground, not to mention this suv using IFS axle which is.....well, for this kind of vehicle maybe this is the suitable tracks. Solid axle all the way + twin locker 🤣
The Type S with adjustable suspension seems to be a prime candidate for Acura to add an off-road mode. I wouldn't expect Land Rover but, for the SHAWD to be reprogrammed for this type of challenge would be pretty awesome.
Thanks for trying but at least put the effort into it! Where is the spotter? Add a spotter or even a better driver and im 100% positive this thing would climb that hill easy. This car wasnt made to be a overlander but it would climb that measly hill better than filmed. My 2018 MDX would make it up that hill no issue with my summer tires
Thank you! This is exactly the kind of videos I'm looking for when I decide to spend money on a vehicle with AWD. If possible, please keep making videos like this. There are plenty of manufacturers who slap the AWD badge on their vehicles when it's really just AWD in name only or a technicality. These kinds of test, especially the diagonal AWD test, is exactly the kind of test that tells you what the system can do when you really do need AWD. I do have to wonder what the sport mode would have done to the power in the rear though. The rear passenger-side wheel and the front driver-side wheel really needed the power when the MDX got stuck. The SH-AWD is supposed to overdrive the rear so on paper, the rear passenger-side wheel should have helped you in that situation near the end but it didn't. It's always a game of figuring out which system and drive mode to enable or disable to get the power routed as best as possible to really determine if the system is just not as capable as the paper specs make it seem to be. Either way, thank you for showing normal mode with traction control on and snow mode with traction control on and then off. Sometimes these systems need a few more seconds of constant throttle input to really figure out they need to shift power elsewhere (especially with open systems). I am very happy to see you did give more time than many others would have to allow the system to show it can or cannot do it. That is very key with these systems that have no lockers that a lot of people don't understand when they make these videos. Most other people give it 1 second or less and then just throw up their hands saying "nope, doesn't work" which just shows those people don't understand AWD systems that don't use lockers. Please don't let the negative comments phase you. You're doing exactly what many of us in the AWD world love to see.
Glad you guys tried this, but... Wish you guys would have tried sport mode and trying transmission in d or s and not shift(granted depending what setting you are in it won't stay in first long. Snow mode is heavily front wheel biased. While sport is biased more rear wards. Either way great video
i think they wanted the Acura to fail. its obviouse that the sh-awd wasnt working. even when they took traction off. all wheels would spin. this reviewer is crap
This review was bad. Also you partially disabled the VSA, but didn’t turn off traction control. There is a pedal dance you have to do to disable the traction control. (Plenty of RUclips tutorials) Most Acura enthusiasts do this before having fun in the snow.
Test the MDX Type S!! Honda is notorious for limiting their best drivelines to only the top trim of vehicles. Take the old TL-SH-awd for example; it had the highest output 3.7L that no other Acura ever saw After all, the engine is the car tested here is nearly identical to the same year Honda minivan 😅
Liked the video. It should open the eyes of those who thought to take this vehicle to places it was not designed for. Thank you. Despite this “failure” I am still getting an MDX.
There's someone who didn't want to push a $61000 vehicle to its limits. Didn't even try a different line. Still probably wouldn't make it up but didn't even try!
Ok drop the jeep rock climbing mentality. Alot of the specs were wrong, and really so was the driving for the vehicle. Dont lock it in first, and do what a normal person would do in those circumstances and it would get through it fine. Ive made it through worse in my MDX. SH AWD gets a whole lot of inputs for where to send power from various sources, like steering and throttle input. So turning right a hair or wheel back and forth would of done it as it shifted power left and right. I really do think locking it in first like you did was the big mistake it should of transferred power to the rear.
As soon as the wheels spun you just tried changing driving modes and flooring it digging yourself even more stuck. Clearly this is not a proper test of the vehicle.
Dude you’re crazy, why would you try this vehicle on a place like that where you know it’s not design for it. You already know that it does not have an option for off road. I think you just don’t like that vehicle and you just want to have consumers to dislike this vehicle . Have you test this vehicle in snow? Prove it and let us know if this vehicle is a failure.. also keep in mind the tires is not meant for off road. Think about it dude. Just a comment don’t get mad because you are comparing an apple and banana. Sorry..
Same reason you don't cut a steak with a butter knife. Wrong tool. In this case wrong vehicle, wrong tires. Sh Awd is for rain, sleet and snow not climbing 😑 loose dirt trails. I own an MDX.
So it's a sports car similar to getting a F1 car and trying to climb up a mountain??? It's like you have dress shoes and you re ready to run the Boston marathon. Great comparison!
i dont think this guy knows what he is doing. the truck didnt even get power to the rear.. he did the video for views . i had to look to see if it even was a SH AWD
You knew it doesn’t have the ground clearance or the tires for that kind of off road track neither was it ever portrayed as an off road vehicle, why would you even attempt it ? What a terrible test. Even if you had a 4 wheel drive you don't give up because you spin the wheels, you back up and take a different line. Have you never driven off road before. Don't judge the vehicle because you took a bad line and then refused to change your course.
Its funny when one struggling on children playground tracks. But yes, this is not meant for true offroad. Yes they can go offroad. But IFS axle? Non locker? Maybe my 30 year old car can do better than this. Yes i mean the yotas, lc80🤣
My 2011 MDX never failed me, 220k still kicking ass. I would take the MDX up snow mountain than the my 2019 4runner that almost got me killed first time off roading. So this out of spec test is probably human error. You cant beat a torque vectoring system and Acura is king of vector system.
