Not the biggest fan of Letterman, but the Late Night Orchestra with Michael Martin Murphy is the best performance of any "Late Night Show" I have ever seen. They nailed both songs with true passion and emotion in their playing. I hope the audience roared for more to show some ultimate respect!
@@usmc-veteran73-77 They nailed "Carolina in the Pines", but Paul was flat-out terrible on "Wildfire". He tried, but he is no Dave Hoffner. Not even close.
Sometimes I would say "I don't care too much for country music", but I would always catch myself humming this song from back in the day.Music is international, if it sounds good you will listen.Takes you to a good place for a moment in time. That's what you want, right???
Great memories of the mid-70s while I was in the United States Marine Corps, at Camp LeJeune, NC. Yes, Jacksonville, North "Carolina" has the Pines. Miss it.
Mid-1970’s 3M played “Wildfire” without accompaniment at a Hillsborough Ave bar in Raleigh, NC. Mostly college audience was rude to him but he was professional and a virtuoso singer/guitarist. He earned my respect & admiration that night. Still has it! Inspiring & beautiful song! Love this fully-backed masterpiece!
It's that flute in the start up of this *magical song...I swear it gives me such a great feeling with chills...!! I drifts into "La La land each time i listens to the song.... I have sung this "Wildfire this song at open mic so many times
Pure musical bliss in Carolina in the pines for both the listener and the musician. The song ends and Anton Fig is like nope here is a monster drum roll y'all bring that jam back for a minute! Best live Letterman performance I ever witnessed right here !
Maaaan...all I can say....a performer who can lose you in the music...release the bonds of earthiness.....transcendence...sooooo wonderful...thanks for the video.
As a big Fan of Michael Murphy, I am astonished that this has been posted for so long and I am just now viewing it for the first time... with a huge grin on my face, too. As other commenters have already stated, this performance was arguably the best I've ever seen on a late night program. C-l-e-a-r-l-y, all of the performers were deeply wrapped into what they were playing and the smiles on their faces reflect what the audience was also feeling. As with others, my thanks for posting this marvelous performance.
I was a Junior in HS when this song was popular. I’d spend a lot of weekends with my sister who was living in Austin at the time. Back then, this wasn’t considered “country” music. It was referred to Cosmic Cowboy. And there was a deep album cut rock radio station in Austin back them…KLBJ-FM…and it would play this song, followed by Wishbone Ash, The Dead, the Beatles, then maybe Thin Lizzy. No one batted an eyed. The mid 70’s were a particularly cool tine to be in Austin. It was a cultural hodgepodge then. I moved there in mid-79 as punk & new age was coming into its own. Good times
This is a great song, and Paul Schaeffer is totally underrated as a musician. I know that people respect him and everything, but he's got talent that allows him to play with anyone, and he could have been part of several HUGE bands. This was his destiny, and I think some folks think he "settled". He didn't.
That was just GREAT!! I've been looking for a video with Carolina in the Pines included. Paul Schafer and the Late Night Orchestra really did a fantastic job. Looked like they were all having a good time. What a classic song. Thanks for posting it.
Wow, just wow. That video performance needs restoration for preservation! I met 3M around 1979 at just about the peak of his popularity. Super nice guy!
Wow very, very good the Letterman band not to mention Paulie Schafer piano playing as he cooks as everybody does there,Wow! What energy.................................
Not every song from my college days holds up all these years later, but my oh my these do. Listening to The World's Most Dangerous Band backing MMM, I had a little moment just now. Looks like all the players and singers did, too.
Same here, I was in the United States Marine Corps stationed at Camp LeJeune NC, when both of these songs were a hit. Carolina in the Pines reminds of Camp LeJeune full of pine trees.
"Carolina in the pines"was written about his then wife. David Hoffner, Michael's original pianist now a sessions player was great in tickling the "Ivory' too in the into of "Wildfire" which was taken from a classical composer
David Hoffner plays rings around Paul on both these tunes. Carolina In The Pines is where Murphy shines on banjo. Love both songs but sounds like a second rate performance compared to the other times I've seen him do both songs.
Hey band leader....get rid of that bass player( he's just a drag ) & combine keyboards with lower register bass keys to substitute for the bass guitar. It's dumb to keep paying for that knucklehead when you don't need him.
ftjax The Ed Sullivan Theater is not a "small venue". And I don't doubt that when you played bass it was boring. Will Lee is an excellent bass player. Go to an audiologist, he can help you with those tin ears.
fosbury68 You're a pin head for even making a statement like that when you should be celebrating the fact that a keyboard bass negates the use of the needless "dummy" thumper regardless of ANY venue.. You need to take piano lessons & put them to use not waste time defending your dead argument.
His voice, much like this song, is absolutely ageless.
Tony killin' it on the banjo!
Paul on the piano! Mike singing it like he owns.
A great chord progression.
What's not to love?
Tony Trischka kills it every time he picks up a banjo.
Yes! To note Tony Trischka on banjo and the others is like an understatement. These musicians are top notch!
Go Paul!!!
These live Letterman performances are awesome!!!!

You can tell Dave loved it.
It was an amazing performance. But I'm going to have to rate it second to my main Man Bruce Springsteen. ✌
Yes the band nailed it.
@@usmc-veteran73-77 They nailed "Carolina in the Pines", but Paul was flat-out terrible on "Wildfire". He tried, but he is no Dave Hoffner. Not even close.
Tru dat!
The banjo picking in the last 30 seconds is truly world class. What a performance all around.
Absolutely. Who is he?
@@dannilaser16 Trischka
@@dannilaser16 that's Tony Trishka. A banjo legend. Look him up.
Tony Tricskra killing it on the banjo
2 of the best songs ever recorded. Carolina in the pines has become a blue grass standard.

This wasn’t considered country when it came out in the 70’s. It was played on rock stations.
Paul Shaffer never fails to amaze me. I see him in so many band's videos, and he fits in seamlessly. Agree this entire performance is fantastic.
Beautiful music
Paul knew what a great piece that was and played his heart out on it.
Boy he shines on that!
Played lousy on Wildfire, but redeemed himself somewhat on Carolina in the Pines.
He hammered it.
@@charleshutton284 Yes. ✌️

I confess! I am in love with the banjo player! This is a cold Nebraska night ,but it feels so good!!
2 of my favorite songs done so well!

Two of my favorite western / classic country songs ever -- I'm not really even into country & western in general, but love these.

Music is a beautiful gift from above.
It happened down here.

OUTSTANDING performance! The best I've ever heard these songs performed. The Late Night Orchestra was smokin'!! Gotta love that Banjo!

This song gets me every time 😓
Triple M gave it his all, as he always does. Great performer. An American Western treasure.
one of a handful of songs i remember where i was . crossing the bridge at yankton sd and realized it was a song for alltime.
Tony Trischka on banjo!

Wow! Bo songs are gems, especially when they are live.
I like the part at 5:35 when Paul Schaeffer raises his arms to adjust his sleeves then gets down to play that beautiful solo.
Ms Sara OH MY!! Mr. Paul deserves his propers for this! HellYEAH!!!
Sorry went to Ole Miss
"Carolina in the pines"was written about his then wife. David Hoffner, Michael's original pianist now a sessions player was great in tickling the "Ivory' too in the into of "Wildfire" which was taken from a classical composer
Love to see Paul getting down on those keys.
I love this Song!!
High above the "Timber" Line~
Paul Shaffer killed it on the piano!
THAT WAS GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Alright!! Great SONG
Loved Paul’s enthusiasm on keyboards but he was adding runs where no no runs belonged.
tONY tRISKA CERTAINLY ADDED A LOT TO THIS ,, ADD TO THAT A DRUMMER WHO KNEW WHEN TO HOLD ONTO THE AUDIENCE WHEN YOU HAVE THEM !!
In the 80s and 90s, radio stations liked to play a live version of Carolina in the Pines but, I don't know what album that live recoding is from.
Merry Christmas Everybody I am the original Little Neal
and Joe Neal on RUclips
Way to go Artie Fufkin!
sadly Artie is going apeshit over the banjo part...guess he couldn't contain himself :-)
That banjo picking is heavenly.
Who is the banjo player?
Actually they are all very good musicians.
Great vocals MMM.
Congrats.
John McEuen played banjo on the original but I don't recognize this cat here.
Sid McGinnis on mandolin.
I wish someone would take this video and clean it up. Just a bit more focus.
David Hoffner plays rings around Paul on both these tunes. Carolina In The Pines is where Murphy shines on banjo. Love both songs but sounds like a second rate performance compared to the other times I've seen him do both songs.
MMM has lost the edge in his voice. That is all. His musicians are good.
Sour notes were had on
"Carolina". Other than that, pretty good band.

Most bands in small venues use keyboard bass...I was a bass player from 1961 to 1987, switched to keys, bass playing is boring. What's your excuse ?

Nothing wrong with you that a quick trip to the audiologist couldn't fix.
fosbury68 Ask Paul Schaffer if he wants to switch to plunking bass guitar...Ha, ha
