This review nailed all the points that I enjoyed about seeing RRR in the theater and I'm so glad I saw it there. It's been too long since we've had men of action in the movies. The movie I keep comparing RRR to in my mind is Predator with Schwartznegger going mano a mano with the alien predator in the jungle. Two very different movies but they both have a primal nature of combat and survival to them.

This is beautiful. I am so impressed with your review and the fact that you could appreciate NTR's incredible acting while most westerners only talked about Ram Charan's. NTR is indeed a powerhouse. NTR was given a lacklustre attire owing to his role being a tribal and his looks were pretty much shaggy when compared to Ram Charan's dashing getup but his acting skills completely overpowered everything else.
I didn't know who NTR was before RRR but man am I obsessed!

Man , as impressive and genuine and striking as Ram Charan's performance is , and I absolutely loved him....it is NTR who walks away with the acting honours for me.....the little nuances that he brings to the character , that stand out.He has a highly expressive ,mobile face....emotions just flit through them telling their own story.
And dont forget that Bheem is dressed in very ordinary, "everyday" clothes all through the movie(except for the Naatu Naatu dance ),whereas Ram Charan's character is always dashing and debonair whether in the cop uniform or in the suspenders and trousers. And also has the striking makeover with bow and arrow in the last act.

Or the heartbreak in his face and voice as he wonders ,Have these British women never borne any children ? Dont they know what it is to cry ?? (After he meets the locked up Malli at the mansion)..
Or the utter disbelief in his expressions when Ram comes to arrest him..and he exclaims over and over again.. I cant bear to see you in this police uniform..I THOUGHT YOU WERE ONE OF US...which is what touches a nerve in Ram, btw, and he punches Bheem so hard that he loses the key..

One of the best reviews of this movie on RUclips…And I’ve seen a lot of them:) Appreciate the attempt to understand it from the original perspective, just like a foreign film is meant to be.It’s rare. One of the points where people from both hemispheres will differ is quantifying the ugliness and multi layered brutality of colonialism. Most agree it was bad,but how bad is really bad? That judgement can only come from experiencing it.In that the characterization of the British and their attitude towards Indians was depicted extremely accurately in the movie.

    Great review.
This movie has plenty of Indian mythological references as well(which might be interesting to know for American audiences)
    1. Alluri Sita Rama Raju is named after Lord Ram(from the Indian epic Ramayana). Co-incidentally the character real name is also Ram Charan(named after Lord Ram)
    2. Komaram Bheem is named after Bheem(from the Indian epic Mahabharata)
    3. Bheem from Mahabharata is a strong muscular guy, which is how he has been shown in the film. Legend has it that Komaram Bheem was famous for hunting tigers in the wild and Alluri Sita Rama Raju was famous for doing sudden raids on police stations to steal weapons.
    4. The final action sequence where Ram Charan is shown with bow and arrow and in saffron clothing is a goosebump scene, because of the resemblance to Lord Ram.
    5. The scene where Bheem rescues Ram from the jail, is similar to Ramayana where Hanuman(ardent devotee of Lord Ram, and also a muscular strong God) helps Ram in the fight against the demon Ravana.
    6. Ram Charan's girlfriend is named in the film as Sita (which is Lord Ram's wife's name in the Ramayana)
    7. The fact that Ram's legs recover miraculously in the end fight scene , is also a reference to a magic herb(Sanjivani) which Hanuman brings from the Himalayas to heal Lakshman(Ram's brother) in the epic final battle of Ramayana.
    8. The flag used in the train action sequence is a real pre-independence national flag used by revolutionaries fighting British.
    9. The red colored pyramid that you see after first meet of Ram and Bheem is a game in India called Dahi handi. It's played during the festival of Janmashtami(birth day of Lord Krishna, the God who narrated the holy book of Bhagavad Gita and who is also part of Mahabharata). The story goes like, as a kid he loved butter so much that he used to steal it from everyone in the village. To prevent him, people used to hang up butter in pots at an impossible height. By he being a God, stole that as well. The event is celebrated in his memory. You will find that in many Indian movies.
The way the story has been written in absolutely EPIC, mixing historical references and symbolism and turning them into super heroes. So it gets extra emotional for Indians seeing their childhood stories come alive on screen in a majestic manner.

Great review Zaxx. I am glad you caught many nuances in your rewatches. I want to point out some details about the story and characters which non-Telugu people who are not familiar with the real-life Ram and Bheem might have missed out on.
    1. Rajamouli based this story on the undocumented period in the lives of both the people before they became the famous revolutionaries that they were. The key theme is friendship and both of them influencing each other. In that way, RRR basically serves as an origin story for both the real-life heroes.
    2. In real life, Rama Raju had a bow and arrows as weapons, while Bheem carried a rifle. In the movie's third act you see Bheem giving Ram the bow and arrows and the outfit that he wears. That's the outfit the real-life Rama Raju wore. Similarly, Ram teaches Bheem how to shoot and gives him the slogan "Jal, Jangal, Jameen" (Water, Forest, Land) which was actually the motto of Bheem in real life. So, basically, the movie portrays their origins in terms of their weapons, attire, and their ideology to their friendship, and their influence on each other.
    3. Regarding the core plot of the film - giving weapons to Indians to get back their freedom. The real-life Rama Raju raided police stations and seized rifles and munitions and led guerilla warfare against the British for the rights of the indigenous people. The writers took this aspect and weaved a fictitious story around this point.

    • @zaxx

The Russo brothers had actually asked Rajamouli about the scene where Bheem brings animals to the fight. He said he started out by thinking about it from Bheem's point of view. What are his strengths? He is from the jungle so animals are his natural connection. That’s how this sequence was designed.
He must have felt like a fish out of water in the palace so he would bring along his strengths with him.

  • @goginenisaikalyan250

I echoed exactly with your opinion. Ram's character has more shades as per the story as his motive was unveiled only in the second half. But bheem's character is very straight as his motive was established in the start itself. Also Bheem need to showcase lot of emotions and there are many close up shots in comparision to Ram's character to showcase what he is feeling. My favourite among all is the closeup shot when he lost the key. The way he showcased how his innocence transformed into pain and then anger is awesome to say the least. Ntr is bang on in expressing the array of emotions in the gap of seconds. His emotions when he knows the truth that malli is alive from Jenny also deserves a lot of praise.

As an Indian feel proud that tollywood is getting better than Bollywood, Bollywood has created such a bad reputation here that even our own people stop watching their movies. U can still find some gems in Bollywood but it's getting smaller and smaller. Soon Bollywood has to change thanks to tollywood which make sure it has original story and doesn't rely on copying someone else work. We feel proud of this movies. Anyone wants to watch some good Indian movies than watch bahubali, 3 idiot, taare zamin par, KGF etc.

    I'm your New subscriber💓
SS Rajamouli never know the meaning of flop in his 25 years of film making.
He's a great fan of Mel Gibson. That's why you see some Mel Gibson's wives in some scenes in RRR.
In an interview, Rajamouli said "I can say every dialogue by dialogue, shot by shot & screenplay by heart about brave heart"
That many times he watched that movie
Any way art always grows through inspirations of somebody's previous work only.
That goes to Mel Gibson himself. He might have got inspiration from the movies he watched as a young man.
Both of them are legends in their respective places
Btw watch bahubali in Telugu🔥 to get original emotions of the film as Rajamouli's films are based on human emotionsm mainly.
He says "language has limitations but emotions of humans are universal. If a person is oppressed, a tribal react to it as similar to as the Japanese.
That's why I try to minimise dialogues as much as possible & try to tell the story through visuals only"
That's why bahubali (both parts) dialogues are just 21 pages & RRR are just 16 pages.
Because he is an avid reader of Indian comics about ancient epics when he was a kid.
That's why he loves pictures more than dialogues.
One strange story about Rajamouli is when he was a kid he used to watch movies on screen before his friends had watched it. In his class there's a leisure period where he used to tell his version of the story of the film he watched at the parts where he didn't like it that much.
He was very determined to change that scene he watched he didn't like when he grew up & become a director.
He literally did that in his film. He created that scene & added his story to satisfy his thirst of that film he watched as a kid in an epic way.
That scene is a horse rescuing his rider when he falls in a quicksand & it was abruptly cut.
The kid rajamouli wasn't impressed with that scene so he made it in an epic way to put an end to that scene in his movie.
That much determined & unsatisfied SS Rajamouli is. Legend for a reason 🔥
    Thanks for reading my essay.

Very cogent and ponctilllious review. Very valid points about masculinity. It is really more that physical strength but also inner truthfulness and strength. Most of the values highlighted in the film seemed to be disappearing in society today. A breath of fresh air for simplifying values that seemed to have been lost in translation today. Pun intended.
