My Son and I bought cheap trash cans and cut 1 1/2” triangles in 3 locations at the very bottom and sat them on the ground and tied to T post to keep it from being knocked around and spilling all the corn at once. They worked pretty well with around $20 each invested.
I love the ingenuity you put into this feeder. I have a single suggestion for you for next season or if you want to modify it sooner: add some pipe to the legs coming out of the feeder, put a small $3 flange on the end to attach your tray to it. The bucks may have a problem getting to the feed troughs with them being so close to the bucket, with their antlers in way and all. Otherwise, I'm building a few of these for next season, and am definitely using your funnel idea. Thank you for sharing! Best of luck this season!
I like this idea and have a couple 55 gal plastic drums. Can you show me how you connected the drywall trays to the drum? Without cutting the top of the barrel off, how do you affix the fittings through the trays/drum? Also, an idea. To keep the trays dryer, could a large circle of plywood or plactic be placed on top of the drum to shield the trays from rain? just a thought.... Thanks for the idea!!
I used 2” street elbows so there is only one flanged end. I cut each elbow on (approximately) 45 degree angle starting about 1/4 to 1/2 inch behind the flange to shorten the overall length. Cut a hole in the tray and barrel just large enough for the elbow to pass through. I used thick, gel type glue around the seams where the elbow meets the tray on both inside and outside. Just for a little extra security, I ran a screw through the bottom of the tray and into the flange. Once all the glue has dried, for the tray up to the hole with the cut end inside the barrel. After that I just ran one 5/16 screw through the tray an into the barrel on either side. It worked fine but in hindsight, if I make another one, I will probably use small bolts with washers. I had one tray break off at the end of the year because of raccoons jumping up on the tray and pulling it down. Hope this helped.
This is a great idea I like it but not sure if something like that would work for me here in south tx them pigs would tear it up in no time by pushing and shoving into it

Smaller (narrow) bucks have more difficulty but they still seem to manage to get in there. The pipe might not be a bad idea, though. Thanks for watching.
Nice video. I was wondering if you had any nice shooters coming to this and eating. Reason I say shooters is due to a larger rack... I'm just wondering if when they would go to eat if their antlers tapping the barrel if that would keep them from coming back? Just a question tho! Thanks a lot!
I actually had the same thought when I built this. On this particular property there are tons of does and smaller bucks but I haven’t seen too many “shooters”. I only had a cam at this location for about a week. So the answer to your question is I don’t know. I definitely see your point with this design but from what I’ve seen over the years, mature bucks are often very cautious around any feeder and won’t come near them. My goal with this particular feeder was to get the does coming through the area on a regular basis. I have three nice mounts and enjoy a chance at a trophy buck as much as the next guy but I’m primarily a meat hunter.
Good concept, but the problem I see is that if you have a decent buck coming to it, the bucks rack will hit the barrel, therefore, probably will not want to use it
Bryan Adams How long it lasts depends on a lot of different factors. Number of deer in the area, other food sources, hunting pressure, etc. The area where this was placed holds ALOT of deer. I had anywhere between 2 and 8 deer on camera hitting this usually several times throughout the day and night, almost daily. Still lasted several weeks. And yes, there are coons in the area and they and the squirrels definitely got their fair share but it still holds enough corn to serve it’s purpose.
I don’t know you so I’m not sure if that’s a backhanded compliment or not. I’ll assume not. But I will say this… if you keep does in the area, it may not be for the food but, bucks will also show up eventually. Especially this time of year.

Probably the best of the "simple" gravity feeders I've seen. Great job.
If you live in an area with Chronic Wasting Disease this design could become a spread vector as multiple deer feeding from the same trays.

Use steel drums, 1.the squirrel won't chew through them . 2. They have locking lids so you don't have to cut anything ,or use a strap

Haven’t tried any type of pellets but I’d assume it would work as long as the pellets were a similar size.

I have Wildgame Inovations programmable tripod feeders and have had raccoons try to climb the metal poles, without success thankfully.

Raccoons get some as do squirrels. But I would imagine that’s the case with pretty much any feeder out there.
