The Squier has a lot more body and midrange going. The Vintera sounds pretty scooped.

Well yeah the J Mascis basically has JM-shaped P90's of course its gonna be more midrangey, the Vintera has real JM pickups.

@@blib3786This. More of an apples to oranges comparison than it would appear. Vintera VS Squier Classic Vibe would be more appropriate.

“Ooh ooh, yeah yeah yeaaaah!” Alex Turner about this review
On a serious note I’m about to buy a J Mascis Model. I’ve been using a Vintera 50’s Mod Strat for about two years and a half. I love it but I need a warmer sounding guitar. Hopefully I won’t be disappointed.
    Great comparison by the way!

Great review! A few years ago I went to go buy a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe IV amp and was not looking to buy a guitar at the time. I the Squier J Mascis Jazzmastet hanging on their wall, I grabbed it and I instantly fell in love with it! The guitar just felt and sounded right to me. I love playing surf and while the the Vintera is something I may consider down the road, I feel I that I have the best of both old and new worlds with the J Mascis. Thanks for your insight!

The older ones, mine for instance is from 2012, have Rosewood instead of Indian Laurel. They are superior instruments compared to most mid range Fender. I have owned American Fender, MIM's top stuff like the Cobain Jaguar... Fender Japan's 62 custom tele reissue..
And the Squier tops em all. Find one with the Rosewood board, stash it away.. people overseas are already trying to get a grand for one. That will bleed over here too, since we don't make em here.

I acquired a neck of the early JMascis from a friend. Used it for a Partsmaster build. Neck is far and away the most comfortable guitar neck I’ve played on any Fender or Squire. If you can even get a hold of just the neck it’s a steal

The one in the video is the earlier "made in China" version with rosewood fretboard and all over higher quality. You might get a good instrument with the current version as well.

I bought the J Mascis after comparing with the more expensive 2024 American Ultra and Vintage II versions. The neck with the satin finish, jumbo frets perfectly dressed, and slightly more girth feels really great; it sounds great on a lot of things, and it looks just as cool for much less money. Pickups aren’t as bright and clear as the Vintage II, and the hardware is a little cheapish, but as a secondary guitar, it’s very good.

The Squier sounds much better with the added mids, and I usually like brighter guitars so that's a shock. Just feel like it's more versatile - the Vintera sounds good with the surf licks though.

I think the J Mascis is a Fender with Squier in the headstock. The only thing the Fender is better is the pickups, I own the Vintera Jaguar 60s and the J Mascis 2015 model (stock). The Squier feels like the better instrument and is not even close, at least with the ones i have. Good comparison!

I’m a huge Jazzmaster fan I play a lot of alternate music both have a place for it I have a soft spot for j and gotta say his guitars are awesome. That’s why my picks goes to his guitar. But let’s throw something else in. My main guitar is 40th anniversary Jazzmaster vintage I put in j’s sig pickups in it and it rips hard. With that setup it’s more in the middle of those two guitars you demo more brighter but got a lot of character. Plus I’m a sucker for maple necks which is why I chose that guitar.

and yeah, i have the guitar you can see in the demo of the link i put in my last comment, so i can say i don't think the pick ups are p90, like he said it is somewhere in the middle between normal JM pick ups and p90

    • @redeyedbuggers
      @redeyedbuggers 5 месяцев назад +1

They are not P90s but they are similar in some ways. They are in between a normal JM pickup & a P90 which gives it sort of a unique sound. Absolutely LOVE mine. Will never get rid of it.

I've been impressed with the build and setup on the J Mascis models I've played in shops. I'd love to have either of these instruments!
So far as pickups, I've always loved the traditional neck sound, plus the character it imparts on the middle position. However, I've never been enthusiastic about a traditional bridge sound. What's interesting about the J Mascis quirky "not quite JM, not quite P90" pickups is that I think that it has the perfect bridge sound for me!
Ideally, I'd get a J Mascis model and swap out the neck pickup for something with more sparkle/scoop. But I do wonder, and perhaps you can confirm: what are the potentiometer values in the J Mascis? For all I know, it may not have the traditional 1Meg pots and use 500k instead, which would limit the high frequencies a little!
