The top or bottom face of the cylinder has a flat surface. If the face has curvature or has a dome like feature how can i draw a direction vector

That's all fine and dandy, but what about a repeating pattern around a hollow cylindrical tube? I.E. placing air vent slots in the same directions as the tube?

Why can you not just use extruded cut?

in that example you are right, but if it was a complex shape extruded cut would end up pretty nasty, out of shape and had problems all over the object. This is something like wrap but to have right dimension on finished product.

Nice condescension. "I guess he means cylindrical." Anyone in the industry knows that a round rod, (vs. square, hex, rectangular...) is a cylinder.
