No these recent reactions to majorette and hbcu’s makes me so damn happy. Like thank u!!! Here in the states it’s unlikely you get a scholarship for these things alone. While yes you can score one for band, or dance as a whole. There’s a subset of talent as you can see. Being from jersey we had to pay for everything, the state didn’t and still doesn’t recognize majorette dancing as a sport/art form. Same goes for the bands. They get the basic school help, but not much. Captains and alumni directors (other hbcu’s too) pioneer a lot of what you see. From composing the arrangements, to organizing formations, each part of this is so intricate. For high school there’s even more added in. From rifles to colder gaurd (flags twirling simultaneously). My mother was rifle captain for many years, and would go to Ireland and Scotland for competitions. My older cousin did color gaurd and her team won all of the competitions for the state. That year her school got to be the collar gaurd for the Super Bowl (the Seahawks vs Broncos one like 2014 I believe). She was out there holding flags with people like Bruno Mars freaking 5 ft away from her 🤣. Thankfully the beauty of these bands, have started to be recognized. So thank you for sharing your commentary and appreciation. My nephew is a current member of this band which is why I viewed this replay. Southern University is located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The acronym (HBCU) stands for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. These colleges were created by wealthy former slave owners, and former freed African slaves. America's apartheid at officially ended and former slaves were not allowed to integrate with the so-called White race, and this is why these universities were created, and exist today mostly in the Southeastern America
The march is 8 to 5. 8 steps for every 5 yards. If I'm right on of the band directors does . The half time show designs. Southern and Jackson State University are my favorite 2 bands. I'm a NOLA girl a band girl. They both has my heart.
Being the drum major in a high school band is a big deal. I never understood why anyone wanted to do it really but you had to take it upon yourself to go to summer programs to learn to do it. It may have been a pathway to college scholarships. To get that position in a major university band program requires agility, stamina, and leadership qualities. I know there are a ton of vids on RUclips of drum major tryouts. I was surprised how hard the auditions were. Wears me out watching them try out for a position you only get to keep for one year. It's not like there is anyplace to use this skill later in life.
The young ladies are Majorettes who march and dance with the band. The cheerleaders are a separate group to hype up the crowd and entertain as well. I was a Majorette in High School and a Cheerleader at my University.
NOT Majorettes, but TRAINED DANCERS!!! You just witnessed the South Univeristy Fabulous Dancing Dolls with the band, the Human Jukebox,,,,Often imitated, but never duplicated!!!
The Bands down here in the HBCU’s (Historically Black Colleges & Universities) are so AWESOME to see in person! You have to come over here an go on a tour! HBCU = Historically Black Colleges and Universities These are Colleges, and Universities that are all Black. Students, and Faculty alike. There are instances where someone that isn't Black have gone to one, but this is pretty rare.
HBCUs exist because of racial segregation. Since black students were not allowed in white institutions, we established our own. Out of this rose a very rich culture as well as a proud and long-standing history. They are home to many of the past century's greatest black political, medical, legal, literary and theatrical figures. Unlike predominantly white universities, HBCUs have never restricted access to non-black students. So, there is quite a bit of diversity amongst them, while remaining predominantly black in attendance.
Non-Black people have always gone to HBCUs. There were non-Black people my parent's college who were in the same class year as she was and this was in the early to mid 1960s.
It still blows my mind to watch these reaction videos. I can't believe this is only a US thing. Lol. Music is universal. Marching bands are modeled after the European military, and they colonized the world over. The fact this is only done in the US is the weirdest part.
However, Black culture took the marching band concept -- originally modeled after the military style that the colonists presented -- added some salt, some hot peppers, and a whole lot more spice, and created their OWN. An entirely new genre. Oh, Hallelujah.🎉
This is a show style band. We have competition style bands which is DCI, and a show style bands which are most college bands. Show band shows are less precise and easier to do on short notice. Show bands are more about showing off to see who can play the loudest. Competition bands use more dynamics and theatrical performances.
