As a car owner I would be furious if I had bought a car, see it get dropped off by a no name contractor, spot dents, deal with countless electrical issues, get no good answers from their customer service team, miss equipment, learn my check was lost, watch the value drop by over half within three months etc. etc. etc.
I didn't trust Henrik Fisker during the Karma days and knew it would be same bathroom, different smell for the Ocean.

anyone who seriously thinks of buying one of the Oceans that are in storage for 45000€ should carefully read the info on the order page. in the fine print it say (in German so I translate somehow): by signing a purchase contract you forfeigh your right to any warranty based repairs, services or any maintenance and replacement parts.
seems like a very risky investment

    36:44 - This.
I *hate* touch screens on cars. One of the few things I dislike about my 2017 Subaru Crostrek is that there was no non-touch screen option.
I want physical knobs and buttons that I can identify by feel.
    Get touch screens out.

    • @oyoyoyo7624
      @oyoyoyo7624 9 месяцев назад

it can be annoying when the “button presses” on my smartphone’s screen aren’t taken and i have to press on the same thing again. i hate it when i have to repeatedly press on my 2012 prius’ screen to get bluetooth to connect my phone.
i doubt the screens in cars will be removed from cars, but i hope i can get cars that hardly rely on them until tech developments make the current screens better, and less “hit or miss.”.
i’m mainly frustrated when the screen interface doesn’t properly register my inputs. that’s saying nothing about buggy software thas not even working as it needs to

It looks great with the matte paint, but I am so glad I didn't buy one on impulse. If they only had a good manager at Fisker, they had known that a extremely critical and competent tester could have saved the company from going under. 98% of the most predictable issues would have been prevented by not cutting costs on testing.

I am from Austria and I can assure you Magna Steyr is a top notch manufacturing company. They have high manufacturing standards thats only one reason why they only made 10.000 cars instead of the estimated 40.000. Software and poor management killed Fisker not manufacturing

Great video. I’m guessing Fisker is feeling like Audi did when the 5000 controversy erupted decades ago. The Ocean Consumer Reports reviewed has to be a lemon - what type of company would release a car with this many issues? It seemed like they tried to be fair and objective, but man, they destroyed Fisker in this video. I enjoy these long form videos.

    • @cbotten106
      @cbotten106 10 месяцев назад +1

60 Minutes did a hit piece on the 5000 and Audi blamed the customer. That is always bad PR, even if true. Fisker is pretty much a cluster at this point. The Ocean vehicle itself might actually be better than the corporate situation.

Start-ups, especially EV ones seem to be getting away with selling a vehicle that is in a state that would be considered a prototype level of development and somehow it's ok. That shouldn't be acceptable. Obviously the product is being rushed so they can get revenue coming in but if the vehicle isn't ready for the consumers then it should be delayed until it is.

While I appreciate CR's attempt to offer a fair and thoughtful take on all their vehicle reviews, having spent an hour of my life listening to how terrible the buying and ownership experience has been, then to hear them say, "but actually, if you have a lot of extra money, and it's not your primary car, you might still get it because...it looks pretty cool?" WTF?!?! Other than maybe "California Mode" this vehicle doesn't bring anything new/different to the table (and FWIW, my mother's 2005 Lexus RX does the same thing, it just doesn't have the precious name) than any number of other EVs. Or does it? Seriously, why would anyone get this vehicle over literally ANY OTHER VEHICLE? Fisker Fans feel free to share here, because I'm perplexed.

I have anxiety with having only 1 fob. They won't even sell you another one so unless 3.0 comes out with phone as key we are kinda screwed. Yes, I think it's a 50-50 proposition, but if they can leverage their current assets to get additional funding along with a partner that can help them with distribution, deliveries, and other sales-related tasks, that might allow them to produce and sell more vehicles while significantly cutting costs and trimming payroll. In that scenario, Fisker could hang on until they resolve their software issues and receive more positive reviews about their EVs.

50/50. They need a deep pocket like UAE or the Saudis. I also think they should skip the US for now and focus on their domestic market and square things away before coming back to the US. The current vehicle and the Pear and Alaska look like a great lineup, so its a relatively easy in for an outsider. That said... not going vertical like Tesla might be insurmountable. We have now ample evidence that while Henrik Fisker is a very good car designer, cynics could certainly argue that perhaps he shouldn't be running an entire car company. To be fair, both of these are extremely rare skills, and the odds of any one person possessing both of them are next to nothing. I actually feel for the guy because I think he's extremely talented but the complexity of this problem is just overwhelming. Starting a new car company and making it profitable is really just unimaginably difficult. It probably requires a fair amount of luck in many ways as well as experience skill and intelligence. A strange combination of risk-taking and extreme judiciousness and careful analysis and decision making. A few wrong decisions among thousands and you have disaster. This is really kind of tragic because the Ocean is a really wonderful appealing design vehicle with a lot of very intelligent design aspects to it.

The goose-neck trailer is in fact a hot shot. You don't really need a CDL trucking license to drive it, as long as the combined gross weight is below a certain maximum.
To call it a truck is to give this rig more credit than it deserves.

On the long term storage - 12V top-up is key. If your EV charges the 12V from the high-voltage while off, just plugging in to 240V or 120V charge cord with a "low max charge limit" should be fine.
If your EV *doesn't* top up the 12V while off, I would highly recommend a standard 12V trickle charger.
Unless you have one of the "lower tech" EVs that you can key-unlock and pop the hood, I wouldn't disconnect the 12V for long term parking.

From what you're describing, you don't have 2.0, your vehicle has not completed the full update.
The remaining 2/2 (and subsequent fob update) make a significant difference in software stability and introduce auto hold.

Pure speculation based on how dirty it was and the damage and horror stories of trying to repair matte paint: The car was delivered to the company in Massachusetts and they refused delivery due the damage, so they bunted it to you. Personally, I wouldn't have paid extra for the paint considering how much of a PITA it is to maintain and it's ugly. They reached out to you, not the other way around, so they should have eaten that $4,500

Keep in mind that Fisker publicly bashed on Tesla by claiming their production Ocean will not have any compromises compared to Tesla’s vehicles. Lucid made similar claims as well. Reality proved otherwise. You guys give these new (or renewed in Fisker’s case) companies way too much leeway compared to Tesla for whatever reason. Ignoring the fact that all these new companies and new EVs are all building off what Tesla has standardized and proven. Again, keep in mind that this is Fisker’s second official stab at auto making after Tesla started. My point is that for a company that claims to be the one that does it all right compared to the top EV maker brand and has had decades of learned lessons from, it’s pure BS that they get a “first timer” pass overall while Tesla is expected to be perfect compared to the competition and gets flamed because they are not.

42:30 - As I'm now on my FIFTH "first year vehicle" EV, with two of them by brand new companies as their first-_ever_ vehicles. (And my old Model S is close, as the shift from the Roadster to the Model S was basically "a brand new car from a brand new company" considering how little the production of the Roadster had to with the production of the Model S.)
First-year BMW i3 purchased used a few years later, first-year Model S purchased used a few years later, first-year Mach-E purchased new as "closeout clearance" when the second-years started shipping, first-year Rivian R1T, first-year (in fact within first *DOZEN* made) Arcimoto FUV purchased new.
Yeah, I'm used to "first year quirks" at this point.
Hell, I'm seriously thinking about getting an Ocean to replace my Mach-E. :-D (And if they go on bankruptcy fire sale for under $15,000, I will absolutely buy one. Even knowing I'm getting the deal because it will have zero post-sales support of any kind.)

The fisker story just seems like what a lot of the automotive companies are adjusting to honestly. Visually a great product, the man has been doing automotive design for awhile. Pairing with a company that knows how to put together a car. What is most missing here is someone that works in software/hardware. Even with subaru, that touchscreen is laggy at start up while everything gets loaded and check through on the screen. As if either missing a bit of cpu clock speed, too light on the memory (or lowered memory bandwidth), or a more refined bootup process. And many evs seem to be struggling with it as well. Wish they would stop trying to reinvent the wheel and just make a normal car with normal driving functions in the normal place. We really need to get the price down on these things if we want to transition away from fossil fuels.
And while at it, standard battery sizes and placement of the high voltage wire for emergency crews should also be at the forefront of development.

The fisker has the two under storage compartments why didn't you guys mention that when looking for the glove box. Also don't forget Lucid had and still does have a software issue so technically Fisker shouldn't be the only one being mentioned for poor quality in that area. I think all LIDAR based systems seem to suck when it rains. I was test driving a Lucid when it was raining and it claimed the LIDAR was blocked.

As a Fisker Ocean One owner with 5000+ miles on my car, I do really appreciate the thorough review of the good and the bad. There are definitely many things Fisker should have done differently, which have seriously cost them as a company and us as consumers dearly. I am a bit confused as to some of comments made in the video that tell me you definitely do not have version 2.0 software. You should have both "Hill Hold" and a driver profile with 2.0. While there is no excuse for Fisker delivering incomplete cars, this is not the first review that I have seen giving inaccurate information so authoritatively. Difficult situation as these types of situations further damage the company (and the consumers) and limit any hope of recovery for what was once a promising alternative in the EV space.

Did you guys see the software update rollout schedule?
3.0.... 4.0 each have scheduled activation for the missing features such as one pedal. Fisker's PR should have at least given you guys the schedule layout for the 5 updates and what they are coming with.
Many of us get some of these issues. It sucks that you guys like many owners got a car with darn near all of the issues.
I would really like to have seen Fisker make it all of the way to at least 4.0 rollout to see the full potential of the car and everything it is equipped for but not yet activated. Watching the project sink before its even finished is disheartening. Could have turned out so much better with a well planned roll out.

This is the first time I have seen a CR car review. Here are my impressions. CR as a buyer is admitting to their stupidity(the paint!). Re; the purchase..."someone else did it" named Andrew....What? You could and should have refused delivery given the obvious delivery issues. Full stop. You are supposed to be the smartest guys protecting other consumers, but you couldn't protect yourself? To start, it's obvious no one at CR read the extensive owners manual(hard copy) before test driving it. Many of the issues you complain about in the video(CA mode, noises, warnings, missing features, defrost, phone pairing etc. could have been avoided if you had read the manual first. Next, why didn't you send back the second sent of floor mats you hadn't paid for?
Fisker has failed for the second time but all the legacy manufacturers are experiencing significant depreciation in the EV lineup. One year old Mercedes, BMW and Ford EV's are all selling for 50 cents on the MSRP. The EV market has dried up and hybrids appear to be the winners.

I enjoyed watching your video. I have been a CR member for over 25 years and remember reading my late dad's CR magazines as early as the 1970's. I'm one of the Fisker Ocean One customers and currently have 8800 miles on my vehicle. The software version 2.0 did improve multiple features of the car and key-fob. My front collision warning and emergency braking both work. They may be just a little too sensitive for my liking and has come to a stop 20ft prior to where I would have typically stopped. I purchased this car with the intent of owning it for possibly 10 years or more. I'm hoping that Fisker remains in business long enough for software version 3.0 and possibly 4.0 to be released in the Spring and Summer, and that a service avenue exists if and when Fisker closes shop.

Very good discussion. I believe a lot of consumers are brainwashed by marketing into believing in OTA updates as save all. Many if not most are not car people and can't tell the difference between a button on screen and a ball joint (that would be a day though when you can OTA a new one).
And the bottom line is if Tesla can get away with it many manufacturers are willing to try. If consumers stopped by junk like this, it would force a change.
